Munich nightlife by neighbourhood: which area suits your night, from Maximiliansplatz techno and Glockenbach bars to Schlachthof raves and the Werksviertel.
Munich nightlife is spread across seven areas, and each one does a different kind of night. The old town has techno under Maximiliansplatz and the glamour of P1. The Glockenbachviertel has the late bars and Pimpernel. Maxvorstadt and Schwabing mix a queer club by the Hauptbahnhof with pubs and cabaret. The Schlachthof district is where the independent scene went, the Werksviertel behind Ostbahnhof has techno and a rooftop bar, and Neuhausen and Giesing each have one venue worth the trip.
Choose the area by the night you want, then check the day: the U-Bahn runs all night on Friday and Saturday but stops at about 01:00 the rest of the week. This guide covers what each area is like, where to go and who it suits.
The old town is where Munich's two club scenes sit closest together. On Maximiliansplatz, Rote Sonne has run its techno basement since 2005: 300 to 400 people, club nights from 23:00 and tickets of about €10–16. Pacha München shares the same address, Maximiliansplatz 5, and opens Thursday to Saturday from 22:00 to 06:00 for house music and big guest DJs, with an adults-only, well-groomed door. On Wednesdays Rote Sonne hosts Garry Klein, the queer party that moved there when Harry Klein closed in 2023, from 22:00 and from €4.
A walk north-east, the Haus der Kunst holds two very different rooms. P1 has been the city's society club since 1984, open on Friday and Saturday from 22:00, with VIP tables and a selective door. In the same building, the Goldene Bar pours drinks under 1937 gold murals until 01:00 from Wednesday to Saturday. Schumann's on Odeonsplatz turns from a canteen into a bar after midnight, but it is closed on Saturday. Odeonsplatz and Karlsplatz (Stachus) are the stations, and on weeknights every night tram meets at Karlsplatz. The area suits a dressed-up night or a techno night with no travel at all. It does not suit a tight budget at the bar.
The streets between Sendlinger Tor, Gärtnerplatz and the Isar are known for their bars and alternative culture, and many of the city's gay bars are here. Start with a cocktail at Zephyr Bar on Baaderstraße, a gin-led bar that opens at 20:00 and gets loud as the night goes on. The tourist office also points to the roof terrace of the Deutsche Eiche, which Freddie Mercury frequented in the 1980s.
For music, Milla on Holzstraße runs bands from 20:00 and party nights from 23:00, at €7–14. When everything else closes, people walk to Pimpernel on Müllerstraße, open every night from 22:00 and until 07:00 on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, with €8 entry after midnight. Pimpernel has been on Müllerstraße since 1970, in a building the tourist office says began as a brothel and later became an exclusive gay bar. Sendlinger Tor (U1, U2, U3, U6) and the Müllerstraße tram stop are the stations. The area suits a bar crawl that ends on a small dance floor. Not for you if you want a big club with a famous DJ.
Maxvorstadt starts at the Hauptbahnhof and runs north through the university district into Schwabing. Near the station, NY.Club on Elisenstraße has been Munich's queer club since 1982: Luxuspop on Friday, techno and men-only nights on some Saturdays. The door is €16, or €14 before midnight, and it takes cards. A short walk away, Café Kosmos on Dachauer Straße is a pub that stays open until at least 01:00 every night and until at least 03:00 at the weekend.
Further north, Schwabing is quieter after dark than its reputation as the old artists' quarter suggests. Vereinsheim on Occamstraße, by Münchner Freiheit, opens daily from 18:00 and puts comedy, cabaret and live music on a small stage. In good weather the beer garden at the Chinesischer Turm in the Englischer Garten opens from 10:00 or 11:00. Hauptbahnhof and Münchner Freiheit (U3, U6) are the stations. The area suits a pub night or a queer night out near the station. It does not suit anyone looking for a run of clubs.
Munich's tourist office calls the old slaughterhouse quarter the city's unofficial party district, and it is where the independent scene lives. Bahnwärter Thiel fills the former Viehhof with shipping containers, decommissioned U-Bahn cars and a 1967 tram, and runs club nights and raves next to flea markets and theatre. Most club nights cost €8–15, and times change from event to event. The Atelierpark on the site is open daily from 08:00 to 22:00, so you can see it in daylight first, and the lease runs until at least 2027.
For the first drinks, Alte Utting on Lagerhausstraße is a ship turned bar and stage, open from Tuesday to Sunday and until 02:00 on Friday and Saturday. U Poccistraße (U3, U6) is the station for both. The area suits people who want a mixed, unpolished night with cheap doors. Not for you if you want a dress code and a cocktail list.
Behind Ostbahnhof, Werksviertel-Mitte has turned into a small nightlife quarter of its own. OTTO·25 is on the 25th floor of the WERK4 tower and is billed as the highest bar in Munich, with a view to the Alps on clear evenings; it opens Wednesday to Sunday from 17:00 to 01:00 and closes in rain or strong wind. On the same street, DNA runs techno on Friday from 23:00 and Saturday from 23:55, both until 06:00. The Sugar Shack rock bar on Atelierstraße opens at 21:30.
One U5 stop west, Jazzclub Unterfahrt on Einsteinstraße has presented jazz since 1978, with most concerts at 20:30 and a Sunday jam session. A normal ticket costs about €18, and popular concerts sell out. Ostbahnhof (S-Bahn, U5) and Max-Weber-Platz (U4, U5) are the stations. The area suits a night that starts with a view and ends with hard techno. Not for you if you want to walk between ten bars.
West of the centre, Backstage has been Munich's home for rock, metal, punk and alternative music since 1991, and at Reitknechtstraße 6 since 2007. It is a cluster of halls, from Werk at about 800 square metres to the smaller Club, plus outdoor areas and a beer garden. Most nights are concerts, and the October 2026 calendar includes The Devil Wears Prada and Clawfinger, with a Smells like Halloween party on 31 October.
The S-Bahn to Hirschgarten gets you there in minutes from the Hauptbahnhof. It suits anyone who wants guitars, band shirts and a loud singalong. It does not suit a techno night or a dressed-up crowd.
On the east bank of the Isar, Untergiesing is residential, but it has one club worth the trip. Charlie is a basement under the Vietnamese restaurant of the same name on Schyrenstraße, running Saturday nights since 2011 with a mostly electronic programme and no fixed genre. It closes for about three months in summer, and the 2026 season opens on 10 October. Elsewhere in Giesing, the Giesinger Bräu brewery has its taproom on Martin-Luther-Straße.
Kolumbusplatz and Candidplatz on the U1 are the nearest stations. Giesing suits locals and repeat visitors who want a small, unhurried night. It is not the place for a first visit.
For nightlife, stay between the Hauptbahnhof, Sendlinger Tor and Gärtnerplatz. You can walk to Maximiliansplatz, the Glockenbachviertel and NY.Club, and the Schlachthof district is two U-Bahn stops away. Near Ostbahnhof makes sense if you are here for DNA or the Werksviertel. During Oktoberfest, from 19 September to 4 October in 2026, book well ahead. Compare hotels and hostels by area on our page of places to stay in Munich.
Munich works best when you pick one area per night and check whether it is a weekend, when the U-Bahn runs all night. The Glockenbachviertel for bars and late nights, Maximiliansplatz in the old town for Rote Sonne and Pacha, and the Schlachthof district for independent club nights at Bahnwärter Thiel.
Yes. The streets around Gärtnerplatz and Müllerstraße are known for bars and alternative culture, with Zephyr Bar, Milla and Pimpernel a few minutes apart.
The old town, for Rote Sonne on Maximiliansplatz, and the Werksviertel behind Ostbahnhof, for DNA on Friday and Saturday. Bahnwärter Thiel runs electronic nights in the Schlachthof district.
On Friday and Saturday nights the U-Bahn runs all night, every 30 minutes per line. On other nights it stops at about 01:00, and night trams run hourly via Karlsplatz (Stachus).
It is quieter than its reputation. Expect pubs, cabaret and beer gardens around Münchner Freiheit and the Englischer Garten rather than clubs.
