Athens

Athens nightlife moves with the seasons. From autumn to spring the clubs are in the centre: Gazi around the old gasworks, the streets between Psyrri and Thissio, and a few rooms near Syntagma and Omonia. In summer much of the party moves to the coast, to beach clubs on Poseidonos Avenue such as Bolivar in Alimos. The bars are the city's strongest card: three made The World's 50 Best Bars in 2025. Greek-hits clubs sell tables and bottles rather than door tickets, while the electronic rooms sell tickets for €10–25. Worth knowing: metro lines 2 and 3 and the tram run all night on Saturdays, and the last Friday trains leave Syntagma at 02:00.

What to expect

The season decides where you go. From autumn to spring the clubs are in the centre, in Gazi, Psyrri and around Thissio. In summer much of the night moves to the beach clubs of the Athens Riviera, and the best known of them, Bolivar in Alimos, keeps its events going into October.

Saturday is the easy night to get home. Metro lines 2 and 3 and the tram run through Saturday night into Sunday, every 15 minutes on the metro. On Friday the last trains leave Syntagma at 02:00. Line 1, the green line through Thissio and Monastiraki, stops around 00:15 every night.

Two kinds of club share the city. Greek-hits and urban clubs in Gazi, such as Destijl and Athina Night Livin, work on tables, with a bottle from €100 for a group. The electronic and alternative rooms, Oddity Club, Death Disco and Gazarte, sell tickets on More.com, usually €10–25.

Why this city is like this

Gazi is named after its gasworks

The gasworks opened in 1857 and reopened as the Technopolis cultural centre in 1987.

Kolonaki means little column

The neighbourhood takes its name from a small column in Kolonaki Square that stood there before the area was built up.

Same founders, two famous bars

Vasilis Kyritsis and Nikos Bakoulis opened The Clumsies in 2012 and are also behind Line, number 8 in The World's 50 Best Bars 2025.

A metro station in waiting

The planned Line 4 is expected to have a station under Exarchia Square, a project that has met strong local opposition.
