Munich

Munich nightlife is smaller and more spread out than its reputation, and it is cheaper at the door than you might expect. There is no single club district. Rote Sonne and Pacha share an address on Maximiliansplatz in the old town, the late bars sit in the Glockenbachviertel, and the independent spaces have moved out to the Schlachthof district and the Werksviertel behind Ostbahnhof. Club nights usually start at 23:00 and finish between 05:00 and 06:00, and Pimpernel stays open until 07:00 three nights a week. Entry is mostly €8–16. Worth knowing: on Friday and Saturday nights the U-Bahn runs all night, so getting home is easier here than in most cities.

What to expect

It is a small scene, and it is spread across the city. Munich has no single party street. The old town has the glamour clubs and Rote Sonne, the Glockenbachviertel has the late bars, and the bigger independent spaces sit out in the Schlachthof district and the Werksviertel. Pick one area per night and you will spend less time on the U-Bahn.

The door is cheap; the drinks are not. A techno night at Rote Sonne costs €10–16 in advance and Pimpernel charges €8 after midnight. The bar is where the money goes: a 0.33 litre Helles is €5.50 at P1, and a vodka tonic there costs about €13.50.

Two scenes that rarely share a room. P1 and Pacha sell tables, want a groomed look and play to a dressed-up crowd. Rote Sonne, Bahnwärter Thiel and DNA are about who is playing, and the queer scene runs from NY.Club to Pimpernel. In 2026 the city also lost Blitz, its best-known techno club, when the lease at the Deutsches Museum ended.

Who this city is for

Techno and electronic music

Rote Sonne has run since 2005 and was named best club in Bavaria in 2024. DNA in the Werksviertel and the club nights at Bahnwärter Thiel cover the harder and stranger ends.

Tables and dress-up nights

P1 has been Munich's society club since 1984, and Pacha runs Thursday to Saturday on Maximiliansplatz. Both sell tables for groups.

Queer nightlife

NY.Club has been open since 1982 and runs Luxuspop on Fridays. Garry Klein moved to Rote Sonne on Wednesdays, and Pimpernel welcomes everyone until morning.

Cocktail drinkers

Schumann's on Odeonsplatz, the 1937 Goldene Bar in the Haus der Kunst and Zephyr in the Gärtnerplatz quarter are three very different rooms.

Live music fans

Milla for bands and parties, Backstage for rock and metal since 1991, and Unterfahrt for jazz since 1978.

Late finishers

Pimpernel runs until 07:00 on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, and the weekend U-Bahn is still running when you leave.

Not for you if you want a dozen big clubs to choose from. Munich has a handful of serious rooms, and most of them are small.

How the night runs

19:00

A drink on board Alte Utting in the Schlachthof district, or in a beer garden while the weather holds.

21:00

Cocktails. Schumann's, the Goldene Bar or Zephyr, which opens at 20:00.

23:00

Club doors open at Rote Sonne, Milla and DNA. The room is still half empty.

01:00

The floors fill. On weeknights the last U-Bahn has gone by now.

03:00

Peak hour in the clubs.

06:00

Most clubs close. Pimpernel keeps going until 07:00 three nights a week.

Top nights out

Techno under Maximiliansplatz

Rote Sonne is a basement for 300 to 400 people behind a black iron door, with tickets from around €10 to €16. It is the most reliable club night in the city.

Dance between old U-Bahn cars

Bahnwärter Thiel built its venue from shipping containers, decommissioned subway cars and a 1967 tram. Club nights usually cost €8–15.

Drinks on the 25th floor

OTTO·25 is on the 25th floor of the WERK4 tower in the Werksviertel and looks over the city to the Alps. Open Wednesday to Sunday, 17:00 to 01:00, but not in rain or strong wind.

Start in a gold-painted bar

The Goldene Bar in the Haus der Kunst has 1937 wall paintings that work as an illustrated drinks list. It closes at 01:00 from Wednesday to Saturday.

Sunday jazz at Unterfahrt

A jazz club in Haidhausen since 1978. The Sunday jam session starts at 20:30, and a normal concert ticket is about €18.

Finish at Pimpernel

A small, dark bar-club on Müllerstraße, open nightly from 22:00. €8 after midnight.

The neighbourhoods

Altstadt & Lehel — glamour and techno

Rote Sonne and Pacha share Maximiliansplatz 5. P1 and the Goldene Bar are in the Haus der Kunst, and Schumann's is on Odeonsplatz. Central, easy to reach and the place for a dressed-up night.

Glockenbachviertel — bars and late nights

The Gärtnerplatz quarter and the streets around Müllerstraße. Pimpernel, Milla and Zephyr are a few minutes apart, and many of the city's gay bars are here.

Maxvorstadt & Schwabing — queer clubs and pubs

NY.Club and Café Kosmos near the Hauptbahnhof, and the Vereinsheim pub stage in Schwabing. More students and locals, fewer visitors.

Sendling & Schlachthof — the unofficial party district

The old slaughterhouse quarter around Poccistraße: Bahnwärter Thiel and Alte Utting. The most independent nights in the city.

Haidhausen & Werksviertel — techno, jazz and a rooftop

DNA and OTTO·25 in the Werksviertel behind Ostbahnhof, and the Unterfahrt jazz club near Max-Weber-Platz.

Neuhausen — rock and metal

Backstage, by S-Bahn Hirschgarten, runs concerts and parties across several halls. Go for guitars, not techno.

Giesing — basement nights across the Isar

Charlie, a basement club under a Vietnamese restaurant in Untergiesing. Small and local, with a summer break.

At the door

Getting in

Most clubs are 18+ and want photo ID. Pacha admits adults only, refuses costumes and asks for a well-groomed look, and P1's door expects smart clothes and shoes. Both sell tables; at Pacha a reservation carries a minimum spend and gets you priority entry. Rote Sonne, Bahnwärter Thiel and DNA are about the line-up: buy a ticket in advance for the bigger nights and the door is rarely a problem.

What it costs to get in

Usually €8–16. Rote Sonne club nights start at €10–16 in advance and Garry Klein on a Wednesday from €4. Bahnwärter Thiel charges €8–15 for most club nights, Pimpernel €8 after midnight, and NY.Club €16 at the door, €14 before midnight or from €12 online. Milla parties cost €7–9 in advance, a few euros more at the door.

Getting home

On Friday and Saturday nights and before public holidays the U-Bahn runs all night: every 30 minutes per line and every 15 minutes in the centre, with night trams and buses every 30 minutes. From Monday to Thursday the U-Bahn stops at about 01:00, and night trams N17, N19, N20 and N27 run hourly, meeting at Karlsplatz (Stachus) between 01:30 and 04:30. A single Zone M ticket is €2.70; a day ticket is €7.00 and stays valid until 06:00 the next morning.

What a night costs

Club entry€8–16
Beer in a club (0.33 l)€5.50
Cocktail€13–15
Cloakroom€2–3
Night transport (single, Zone M)€2.70
Taxi across town€20–30
Döner at 04:00€7–9
Hostel bed, weekend€35–60

Cheap night — €45

A day ticket for €7, a pub first, an €8 door at Pimpernel or a Bahnwärter Thiel night, four beers, the U-Bahn home.

Normal night — €85

Two cocktails, a €12–16 club ticket, four or five drinks inside, the cloakroom and food on the way home.

Big night — €200 and up

Dinner, a table at P1 or Pacha shared with friends, drinks until close and a taxi at the end.

What visitors get wrong

Buy the day ticket

A Single-Tageskarte for Zone M costs €7.00 and is valid until 06:00 the next morning. Three rides and it has paid for itself.

Go out on a weekend if you want the U-Bahn

It runs all night on Friday and Saturday. On other nights it stops around 01:00 and you are on the hourly night trams.

Lost after 01:30? Head for Karlsplatz

On weeknights every night tram and the N40 and N41 buses meet at Stachus once an hour, and they wait five minutes for each other.

Buy club tickets in advance

It is cheaper: a Milla party is €7 in presale and €10 at the door, and NY.Club is €12 online against €16 on the night.

Schumann's is closed on Saturday

It is open the rest of the week, from 09:00 on weekdays and from 17:00 on Sunday. Plan the cocktail stop around it.

Check the sky before OTTO·25

The rooftop closes in rain or strong wind and takes no reservations, so it is a dry-evening plan.

Why this city is like this

Freddie Mercury's birthday party

He celebrated his 39th birthday at the club now called NY.Club in September 1985. Guests got through 307 bottles of champagne.

A club named after a film

Rote Sonne takes its name from a 1969 film and sits in the basement of a café destroyed in the Second World War.

The walls are the drinks list

The Goldene Bar's 1937 murals by Karl Heinz Dallinger show where its wines and spirits come from, from Cuba and Jamaica to Italy and Dalmatia.

P1 is an address

The club opened in 1984 and took its name from Prinzregentenstraße 1, the Haus der Kunst, where it still is.
