Breda

Breda nightlife is compact and student-driven. Most of it happens in the party cafés of the Vismarktstraat, the Visserstraat and the Havermarkt, a few minutes' walk from the Grote Markt, where some of the 20,000 students who study in the city fill the streets from Thursday to Saturday. The standard closing time is 02:00, but cafés with a mayoral exemption, such as Studio Dependance and Café Nassau, stay open until 04:00. Mezz, the pop venue on the Keizerstraat, runs club nights that can last until 06:00 and cost €15 to €20. Worth knowing: the Saturday night bus is only a trial that starts at the end of 2026, so plan the way home.

What to expect

The night happens on a few short streets. The Vismarktstraat and the Visserstraat run side by side, the Havermarkt is next to them, and between them they hold most of the party cafés: Proost, Studio Dependance, Café Nassau, Café Janssen, Peddels and the Walkabout Café. You walk from door to door.

Closing time is 02:00 unless the mayor says otherwise. Breda's alcohol and hospitality bylaw bars visitors between 02:00 and 07:00 and lets the mayor grant an exemption in the entertainment area for 02:00 to 04:00, with no terrace use in those hours. Studio Dependance closes at 04:00 on four nights, and Café Nassau is listed until 04:00. Club nights at Mezz run to 06:00 with an exemption for the night.

It is a student city, so Thursday is busy. About 20,000 young people study in Breda, at Avans and Breda University of Applied Sciences among others. A 2025 student guide calls Thursday the student night, with dancing at Café Nassau from around 23:00. We found no published student price list, so ask at the bar.

Who this city is for

Students and first-years

Café Nassau, Peddels and the Walkabout Café are the student addresses, with Walkasino dice games on Tuesday and Friday at the Walkabout, where a game costs €2.50 and the prize is a beer.

Party-café crowds

Dutch hits and après-ski at Peddels, current hits and classics at Café Janssen, and a Beurscrash at De Beurs, when drink prices crash for about ten minutes.

Club and gig fans

Mezz books touring bands and, after midnight, club nights that run to 06:00. Club Spock is the techno room on the Reigerstraat, listed as the Saturday dance club.

Beer drinkers

De Boterhal has 25 taps on the Grote Markt, Dok19 more than 80 beers at the harbour, and De Beyerd brews its own beer and runs brewery tours with tastings.

Groups that want something different

The Silent Breda is a silent disco with three channels on Friday and Saturday, and Karaokebar Ameezing covers pop, rock, country and Dutch hits from Thursday to Saturday.

Carnival fans

During carnival the city is called Kielegat. The 2027 carnival runs from 6 to 9 February, and the season opens on 11 November.

Not for you if you want a different big club every weekend. Breda's club nights are mostly at Mezz and Club Spock, and most of the rest is party cafés.

Top nights out

A club night at Mezz

Resident Advisor lists PULSE x UNIT on Friday 27 November, 23:00 to 06:00, 18+, for €15. Lockers cost €2.50 and open with a contactless bank card.

Walk the Vismarktstraat

Proost, Studio Dependance, Café Nassau and Café Janssen are on one street. Start with the Proost rooftop, which looks over the Grote Kerk, and finish where the music is loudest.

Dance with headphones

The Silent Breda is open on Friday and Saturday with party, urban and techno channels, each with its own DJ.

The first-Monday beer night

On the first Monday of the month Studio Dependance and Proost run a speciality beer night from 19:00. A 2025 student guide listed a tasting with snacks at €17.50.

Carnival in Kielegat

Carnival 2027 runs from 6 to 9 February. The centre gets crowded: in 2025 the municipality asked people to stay out of the centre on Carnival Monday, and the parade route was shortened.

A brewery tour at De Beyerd

De Beyerd continues Breda's brewing history back to 1628 and runs brewery tours with tastings. The restaurant sits between the brewing kettles.

The neighbourhoods

Grote Markt — beer cafés and terraces

The main square. De Boterhal at number 19 has 25 taps and more than 100 bottled beers, and Het Hart van Breda has a large terrace. It is the easiest place to start.

Kerkplein / Reigerstraat — brown café and techno

Café De Bruine Pij at Kerkplein 7 sits under the Grote Kerk. Club Spock is in the De Graanbeurs building at Reigerstraat 18-20, next to the Foodhall.

Havermarkt — the student square

Peddels at number 8, the Walkabout Café at number 25 and Café Bruxelles at number 5-7. Sociëteit Het Forum at number 12 is a student society run by volunteers.

Vismarktstraat / Visserstraat — party cafés

Proost, Studio Dependance, Café Nassau and Café Janssen on the Vismarktstraat, and De Beurs, The Silent Breda and Karaokebar Ameezing on the Visserstraat. This is where the night peaks.

Haven — the harbour

Dok19 at Haven 19 has more than 80 beers and a terrace by the water, and is quieter than the party streets.

Ginneken — beer on a square

Café Moeke on the Ginnekenmarkt is a Belgian beer café with a large terrace, outside the centre. Go for an early evening, not for 04:00.

Centrum — Mezz and the bars

Mezz at Keizerstraat 101, De Beyerd on the Boschstraat, the Bliss Gin & Tonic Hotel Bar on the Torenstraat, Petit Bardot on the Van Coothplein and Café Dunne on the Schoolstraat.

At the door

Getting in

Bring ID. Breda's night venues ask guests to show a valid ID, refuse anyone who is visibly drunk and ban weapons and drugs, under house rules agreed in 2022. The legal age for all alcohol is 18, and Mezz's programme after midnight is 18+ unless stated. Smoking inside bars and clubs has been banned since 1 July 2008. Most party cafés are walk-in; Mezz and themed nights at Proost sell tickets online.

What it costs to get in

Mezz club nights cost €15 to €20 in autumn 2026, and a locker is €2.50. We found no published door price for the party cafés, so check at the door. Keep a debit card with you: card-only bars are common in the Netherlands, and the Mezz lockers open with a contactless card.

Getting home

Plan this before the night starts. An Arriva night bus is due to start as a two-year trial at the end of 2026, on the night from Saturday to Sunday only, leaving central Breda at 01:40, 02:50 and 04:00 on lines 850 towards Etten-Leur and 854 towards Oosterhout; the fare is not yet set. Otherwise walk or cycle in the centre. Mezz is about 1.5 km and 20 minutes on foot from the station. Taxis have a maximum tariff of €4.31 plus €3.17 per kilometre and €0.52 per minute in 2026, and Uber operates in Breda, though pickups can take longer than in a big city. Late NS trains in Brabant are limited, so check NS or 9292 for the last train.

What visitors get wrong

Plan around 02:00

Most bars close at 02:00. Only cafés with an exemption stay open to 04:00, and their terraces close at 02:00.

Carry a debit card and ID

Mezz lockers open with a contactless bank card, card-only bars are common in the Netherlands, and Breda's night venues ask for a valid ID. Tipping is light: round up or leave small change.

Check the Mezz agenda first

Concerts sell out, and the 06:00 club nights depend on a mayoral exemption for each night.

Treat carnival as a separate trip

On Carnival Monday 2025 the municipality asked people not to come into the centre, and Breda, Tilburg and Den Bosch send WhatsApp channel alerts when a place is too busy.

Go midweek for the cheap options

Studio Dependance runs free live music bingo on Tuesday at 21:30, the Walkabout has Walkasino on Tuesday and a shot bar on Wednesday.

Allow time for Mezz

It is about 1.5 km from the station, a 20-minute walk. Uber operates in Breda, but book ahead if you can, as pickups may take longer than in bigger cities.

Six o'clock started as a trial

In 2018 the council tested four club nights that could run until 06:00. The first was at the Graanbeurs on 14 April 2018, with Mezz and Spock also scheduled.

Brewing back to 1628

De Beyerd continues a brewing history that goes back to De Drie Hoefijzers in 1628 and brews beers from original recipes.
