Milan nightlife starts with aperitivo. From early evening the bars of the Navigli, Brera and Porta Venezia serve a drink with food, and for many people that is the main event. The clubs come later and sit further apart: house and techno at Volt near Porta Ticinese, Gate and Alcatraz on Via Valtellina, Amnesia by the M4 in the east, and members-only cultural associations on the edges of the city. Most club nights run from 23:00 to 05:00 or 06:00, and entry is usually €10–25. Worth knowing: the metro stops at around 00:30, and several of the best underground venues need membership booked online the day before.

Aperitivo is half the night, not a warm-up. From early evening the bars pour a drink and put out food, and a Milanese night often starts at Camparino in the Galleria, open since 1915, or with a Negroni Sbagliato at Bar Basso, where it was invented. Plenty of people stop after dinner, and that still counts as a full night here.
The clubs are spread out, so pick one area per night. Volt is near Porta Ticinese, Gate and Alcatraz share Via Valtellina by Maciachini, and Amnesia and Fabrique are in the east. The metro stops at around 00:30, so you arrive by train and go home by night bus or taxi.
Membership is the Milan twist. Many underground venues are cultural associations, called circoli. At Masada, Circolo Amelia, Arca or NAMA you register online, pay a membership fee and sign up for the event, usually by the evening before. Tempio del Futuro Perduto registers you for free at the door.
