Ruin bars, riverside clubs and a summer that does not really stop. Budapest is the whole story.
Live city guides: Budapest.
Best clubs: Budapest.
Where to go out
Budapest is the whole country's night. Hungary's nightlife is concentrated in the capital, and most of it in one district: the old Jewish Quarter of District VII, where empty buildings became ruin bars in the early 2000s. Outside Budapest, summer moves to Lake Balaton and the festival fields.
The ruin bar is the warm-up, not the whole night. Ruin bars open in the afternoon and fill from ten. Clubs peak between one and three, and most venues close between two and six. The best nights use both.
Summer is the reason to come. From May to September the garden bars open, parties move onto the Danube, and August brings Sziget to an island in the river. Winter is quieter, colder and cheaper.
Ruin bars are easy: no door, no dress code, everyone welcome.
Beer from around 900 forint and free entry to most bars. A full night costs a fraction of Vienna or Munich.
Sziget in August and Ozora in late July are among the biggest festivals in central Europe.
Big ruin bars have room for everyone, and the district is compact enough to lose each other and meet again.
Garden bars, open-air venues and river boats run late from June to August.
Thermal baths by day and, on selected nights, bath parties with music and lights.
Not for you if you want a local-only Saturday in District VII. The ruin bar streets are packed with stag groups and tours; go midweek or look further out.
Three days of house and techno by the lake. A smaller, music-first alternative to the big names.
Indie and electronic music in the Buda Hills, a short trip from the city.
A week of psychedelic trance in the Hungarian countryside, about two hours south-west of Budapest.
Several days of music on Óbuda Island in the Danube, reachable by suburban train from the city. One of Europe's biggest festivals.
Hungary's national day ends with fireworks over the Danube in Budapest. The whole city is on the embankments.
Friday in the ruin bars of District VII, Saturday at a club or a river venue. The Budapest nightlife guide has the areas, the doors and the night buses.
A ruin bar night, a garden bar night and a bath party. Three different nights in one city, June to August. Start with the Budapest guide.
Two nights each, about two and a half hours apart by train. Vienna for the clubs under the railway arches, Budapest for the ruin bars.
Three nights in Budapest, then a train to the lake for beach bars and a festival weekend in July or August.
Courtyards, mismatched furniture and a dozen rooms in one building. Go on a Wednesday to see it without the crowds. The Budapest guide has the ones worth it.
Music, lights and a thermal pool at night. Tickets from around 15,000 forint.
Mid-August, a whole island in the Danube given over to music. The city feels it too.
20 August over the Danube. Find a spot on the Pest embankment early.
Fruit brandy, strong and served in every bar. One is a welcome; four is a mistake.
Wine and soda water, mixed in set ratios with their own names. The local way to drink all evening without falling over.
Deep-fried dough with sour cream, cheese and garlic. The Hungarian answer to everything.
Pitta, meat, sauce and chips from late hatches across District VII.
Paprika sausage from a street grill, with bread and mustard.
Small savoury scones from a bakery at dawn. Breakfast for people who have not slept.
A chocolate-covered curd bar from any non-stop shop. Sweet, cold and very Hungarian.
Ruin bars have no selection and no dress code. Clubs are easygoing too, apart from a few upmarket rooms.
Some bars and clubs in District VII turn away stag groups. Split up and drop the costumes.
People who invite you to a bar or offer a ride are often leading you to a clip joint with an enormous bill. Walk on.
Choose forint when a card machine offers euros, and use bank ATMs rather than standalone ones.
People live above the ruin bars and have pushed for earlier closing. Take the party inside.
Drink spiking and pickpocketing are reported in the busiest venues. Keep your drink and your phone in hand.
