What to expect

Poland goes out late, drinks cheaply and finishes at a kebab stand. A night starts in a pub or a vodka bar, moves to a cocktail bar around eleven and reaches the clubs after midnight. Many bars close at one or two, while clubs run until five or six at weekends. A half-litre beer costs about 12 to 20 złoty, roughly €3 to €4.50.

Warsaw and Krakow are two different nights. Clubs in Warsaw are spread out: techno and indie in Praga across the Vistula, mainstream rooms around Mazowiecka and Nowy Świat. Krakow is compact and student-led, with cellar bars and late snacks around Plac Nowy. Wrocław, Gdańsk with Sopot, Poznań and Katowice run smaller versions.

You cannot buy drinks from a shop at night. Warsaw banned takeaway alcohol sales from 22:00 to 06:00 in June 2026, and Krakow has banned shop sales from midnight to 05:30 since 2023. Bars and clubs are not affected. Parliament is moving towards a national ban, and drinking in the street is already illegal. Plan the night around venues.

Who it is for

Small budgets

Beer for under €4 and club doors from about €5. Poland costs well below western Europe.

Techno and electronic fans

Warsaw has underground rooms such as Smolna, and Katowice hosts Tauron Nowa Muzyka.

Vodka and craft beer drinkers

Vodka bars pour shots for a few złoty, and the big cities have craft-beer pubs.

Students and groups

Wrocław has more than 130,000 students, and Krakow is close behind in term time.

Festival goers

Open'er, Mystic, Audioriver and OFF fill the calendar from June to August.

Weekend city breakers

Warsaw and Krakow are about two and a half hours apart by train.

Not for you if you plan to buy drinks from a shop and drink them in a park. Night sales bans and public drinking fines make that a bad idea.

Festivals and the weeks to avoid

Late May or early June — Tauron Nowa Muzyka, Katowice

Four days of electronic and experimental music in former industrial spaces. About an hour from Krakow by train.

June — Mystic Festival, Gdańsk

Metal, rock and alternative over four days in Gdańsk.

Early July — Open'er, Gdynia

Four days of international headliners on a former airfield beside the Baltic. Next edition 30 June to 3 July 2027.

July — Audioriver, Łódź

Three days of electronic music, roughly an hour and a half from Warsaw by train.

August — OFF Festival, Katowice

Alternative and indie over three days in the Valley of Three Ponds.

October — Unsound, Krakow

Experimental electronic music across several Krakow venues.

Weekends that work

2 nights — Warsaw, across the river

Friday around Nowy Świat, Saturday in Praga for techno or indie. The Warsaw nightlife guide has the doors, times and night buses.

3 nights — Warsaw and Krakow

One night in Warsaw, then about two and a half hours by train to Krakow for two. Kazimierz first, a club second.

4 nights — Krakow, Katowice and Wrocław

Two nights in Krakow, one in Katowice an hour away, then one in Wrocław, about two hours further.

5 nights — Berlin and Warsaw

Three nights in Berlin, then about five and a half hours by train to Warsaw for two cheaper ones.

7 nights — Warsaw, the coast and Krakow

Two nights in Warsaw, three hours by train to Gdańsk and Sopot for two, then back through Warsaw to Krakow for three. In early July, add Open'er in Gdynia.

Nights people fly in for

Zapiekanka at Plac Nowy

A baked baguette half with mushrooms and cheese, sold in Kazimierz. The Krakow stop between the bars and bed.

Praga after dark

Former factories across the Vistula, now clubs and live rooms. Where Warsaw goes when the centre is crowded.

A milk bar by day, a vodka bar by night

A bar mleczny serves cheap Polish lunches, and most close by early evening. A vodka bar pours shots for a few złoty after dark.

Summer on the water

Warsaw's Vistula boulevards run open-air bars from May to September. On the coast, Sopot's pier does the same job.

A festival in Gdynia or Katowice

Open'er fills a former airfield on the Baltic in early July. Katowice hosts Tauron Nowa Muzyka and OFF.

Wrocław on a student night

The bars around the Rynek and Plac Solny stay busy in term time.

What you eat after

Zapiekanka

An open baguette baked with mushrooms, cheese and ketchup. The queue at Plac Nowy in Kazimierz is the best known.

Kebab

The standby near every club. Open until the clubs close.

Pierogi

Dumplings filled with potato and cheese, meat or cabbage. Many bars serve them until the kitchen closes.

Żurek

A sour rye soup with sausage and egg, often in a bread bowl. A good pub order after the first rounds.

Obwarzanek

A ring of bread with sesame or poppy seeds, sold from street carts in Krakow from early morning. The walk-home breakfast.

Door culture and what not to do

Doors are selective at some clubs

Most bars let anyone in. Big clubs may refuse groups of men and anyone visibly drunk.

Rooftop clubs have a dress code

Level 27 in Warsaw expects smart casual. Underground techno rooms such as Smolna care far less.

Pay by card, keep coins

Contactless works almost everywhere. Keep coins for the cloakroom, the szatnia.

Tip about ten per cent

Say the total you want to pay when you hand over the card. Service is usually not added.

Watch the bill and the street offers

Visitors have been overcharged on card bills. Street promoters selling VIP tables are a warning sign.

Drugs are illegal

Possession is a criminal offence, with up to three years in prison. Prosecutors can drop small personal-use cases, but dealing and smuggling bring long sentences.

Ask before you film

Phones are fine in bars. On a dance floor, ask before filming other people.

Do

  • Bring a passport or national ID card
  • Book rides through an app such as Bolt or Uber
  • Check the bill before paying by card
  • Buy drinks before the shop cut-off or at the venue

Do not

  • Drink in the street or in parks
  • Follow promoters offering VIP tables
  • Get into an unmarked taxi
  • Leave your drink unattended, as spiking happens

ID, transport and getting home

Getting home

Warsaw's metro runs until about 03:00 on Friday and Saturday nights and stops around midnight otherwise. N-numbered night buses run about every 30 minutes, and Krakow has 600-series night buses. Bolt, Uber and FreeNow work in the big cities, and fares can jump at closing time.

ID

You must be 18 to buy or be served alcohol. Clubs often ask for photo ID, so bring a passport or national ID card.

Paying

Cards and phone payments work almost everywhere. Choose złoty if a terminal offers euros. Keep coins for cloakrooms and tips.

Tickets

Club nights usually sell at the door. Festivals and busy events sell online, often through eBilet.pl.

Drinking outside

Illegal outside designated zones. Police can fine you or take you to a sobering-up station and charge for the stay. Shops will not sell alcohol late: Warsaw from 22:00 to 06:00, Krakow from midnight to 05:30.

Safety

Generally safe at night. The risks are spiked drinks, card overcharging, pickpockets and unlicensed taxis. LGBT+ friendly bars exist in Warsaw, Krakow, Wrocław, Poznań, Gdańsk and Sopot.

Smoking

Banned inside bars, clubs and restaurants since 2010, apart from separate smoking rooms. Fines go up to 500 złoty.

Language

English works in Warsaw, Krakow and Wrocław bars. Na zdrowie is cheers and dziękuję is thank you.
