Mexico City

Mexico City nightlife is spread across neighbourhoods rather than one strip. Roma and Condesa hold the cocktail bars and most of the small clubs, Juárez and Zona Rosa have the speakeasies and the LGBTQ+ scene, the Centro Histórico has cantinas and rooftops, and Polanco runs dressy, bottle-service rooms. The city's base rule is service until 03:00, and cocktail bars usually close at 01:00 or 02:00, but several clubs publish hours until 05:00 from Thursday to Saturday. Entry is usually MXN 150–400 (about €7–20). Worth knowing: the Metro stops at midnight, so book Uber or DiDi from inside the venue and check the plate.

What to expect

The night starts late and starts at a table. Cocktail bars open at 18:00 and fill from about 22:00. Clubs rarely fill before midnight and often peak around 01:00 or 02:00. Many people eat first, and the cantinas of the Centro open at midday.

Closing times are looser than the rule suggests. The base rule in the city's commercial-establishments law is service until 03:00 and alcohol sales until 02:30, one hour earlier from Sunday to Wednesday. Cocktail bars here close at 01:00 or 02:00. Some clubs publish later hours: Loo Loo Studio and La Santa list 05:00 on Thursday to Saturday. Check each venue's own listing, because sources disagree.

It is a city of neighbourhoods, and the altitude changes the night. Roma, Condesa and Juárez are walkable late. The Centro, Polanco and Coyoacán are not a walk apart, so after midnight you will want a booked ride. Mexico City sits at 2,240 m, so drinks hit harder. Drink water between rounds.

Rooftops and jazz

Toledo Rooftop and Terraza Catedral give you the view, and Zinco Jazz Club plays in a former bank vault.

Not for you if you plan to walk between venues alone after 01:00. The US advisory rates Mexico City Level 2 and asks for extra care at night. Book rides door to door.

Top nights out

Start with a mezcal flight

La Clandestina pours flights at about MXN 250–400 (€12–20), and Bósforo is a candle-lit mezcal bar in the Centro. Eat first: mezcal hits harder at altitude.

Book a table at Bar Mauro or Handshake

Bar Mauro requires a reservation. Handshake bookings last 1 hour 30 minutes, and a no-show costs MXN 250 per person.

Spend an evening in a Centro cantina

La Ópera has served on Avenida 5 de Mayo since 1876, and Salón Corona is a beer hall on Calle Bolívar. Go before they close at 23:00 or midnight on weeknights.

Dance in a 1937 hall

Salón Los Ángeles opens Tuesday to Sunday from 17:00 to 23:00, with live danzón and salsa.

Climb to a rooftop

Terraza Catedral opens daily from 13:00 to 01:00, and Toledo Rooftop looks over the Reforma skyline.

Hear mariachi at Plaza Garibaldi

Salón Tenampa has stood there since 1925. Bands play song by song, so agree the price first.

The neighbourhoods

Roma — cocktail bars and small clubs

The densest night in the city. Avenida Álvaro Obregón has Licorería Limantour, Tlecān, Departamento and Antro Juan, and Bar Oriente, M.N. Roy and Patrick Miller are a few streets away. Bar Mauro is on Calle Tabasco and Guilt Roma is in Roma Sur. Walkable until about 01:00.

Condesa — cocktails and a few clubs

Fünk Club is on Avenida Insurgentes Sur, Baltra Bar on Calle Iztaccíhuatl and La Clandestina on the border with Roma. Salón Pata Negra has a salsa floor on Calle Tamaulipas.

Juárez & Zona Rosa — speakeasies and LGBTQ+ nights

Handshake is on Calle Amberes, Hanky Panky on Calle Turín, Loo Loo Studio on Calle Londres and SIC on Calle Versalles. Toledo Rooftop gives you the skyline. Doors are stricter here.

Polanco — dressy and expensive

La Santa on Avenida Masaryk sells bottles and keeps a formal dress code. A 2026 guide puts a night at MXN 1,500–4,000 or more per person. It is a destination, not a bar-hopping area.

Centro Histórico — cantinas, rooftops and mariachi

La Ópera, Salón Corona, Bósforo, Zinco and Salón Tenampa are here, plus Club Amok and Marrakech Salón. Guides advise avoiding unfamiliar side streets after 01:00.

Coyoacán — rock bars and cantinas in the south

El Hijo del Cuervo faces Jardín Centenario, and La Coyoacana has been a cantina since 1936. It is far from Roma, so book a ride home.

At the door

Getting in

Most bars are walk-in, but the best cocktail bars take reservations. Bar Mauro requires one, and Handshake takes online bookings with a card guarantee. Clubs vary: Loo Loo Studio asks for a table or a promoter's guest list, and La Santa requires a reservation that still does not guarantee entry. Smart casual works in Roma, Condesa and Juárez, and Polanco expects more. Bring ID or a passport copy. The drinking age is 18.

What it costs to get in

Roma clubs charge about MXN 100–350 (€5–17): Patrick Miller about MXN 100, Mama Rumba from MXN 140, Antro Juan about MXN 300 and Fünk Club about MXN 350. Those figures are from 2024 and 2025 guides, so check the night. Centro de Salud takes a low cover in cash. Polanco rooms sell tables and bottles.

Getting home

The Metro runs 05:00–24:00 on weekdays, from 06:00 on Saturday and 07:00 on Sunday, for MXN 5 (€0.25). The Nochebús runs 00:00–05:00 every day on corridors that include Insurgentes, Reforma and Eje Central, at MXN 7 (€0.35). After midnight, book Uber, DiDi or Cabify from inside the venue and match the plate. The UK government warns that unlicensed taxi drivers have robbed and assaulted passengers, including in Mexico City, and advises sitio taxis from authorised ranks.

What visitors get wrong

Book the ride before you need it

Order Uber, DiDi or Cabify from inside the venue and match the plate before you get in. Share the trip with someone if you are alone.

Reserve the top bars

Bar Mauro requires a reservation. Handshake takes online bookings for up to 12 guests, and groups of six or more book by email.

Carry some cash

Cards work in most bars and clubs, but cantinas, taquerías and Plaza Garibaldi are cash places. Centro de Salud takes its cover in cash.

Eat, and drink water

At 2,240 m alcohol hits faster, especially in your first days. Order water between rounds.

Keep your drink in sight

The UK government warns that criminals have robbed and assaulted travellers after drugging them, and that methanol in drinks can kill and cannot be detected by taste or smell. Do not leave a drink unattended.

Use ATMs by day

Withdraw cash during the day inside a bank or a mall, and keep one card apart from your wallet. Do not take cash out in the street at night.

Why this city is like this

The oldest dance hall opened in 1937

Salón Los Ángeles, in Colonia Guerrero, still hosts live bands playing danzón and salsa.

A cantina from 1876

La Ópera on Avenida 5 de Mayo has carved wooden booths and a gilded room that predate every club in this guide.

Jazz behind vault doors

Zinco Jazz Club is in the basement of the former Bank of Mexico building, and you pass the old steel vault doors to get in.

Seven bars in the 2026 list

Bar Mauro (second), Tlecān (fifth), Handshake (12th), FO+MA (13th), Licorería Limantour (20th), Kaito del Valle (25th) and Baltra Bar (48th) made North America's 50 Best Bars 2026. Handshake was first in 2024 and 2025.

Questions, answered

What time do clubs close in Mexico City?

The city's base rule is service until 03:00, with alcohol sales ending at 02:30. Cocktail bars usually close at 01:00 or 02:00. Some clubs publish later hours: Loo Loo Studio and La Santa list 05:00 on Thursday to Saturday, and Patrick Miller and M.N. Roy list 04:00. Check each venue's listing.

Is Mexico City safe for a night out?

The US rates Mexico City Level 2, exercise increased caution, and advises extra care at night. Petty theft is the common problem, and the UK government also warns about drugged drinks, methanol and unlicensed taxis. Book rides in an app, watch your drink and stay on busy streets.

Are express kidnappings a real risk?

The UK government says short-term opportunistic kidnapping can happen, particularly in urban areas, and that victims are forced to withdraw cash at an ATM. It is not specific to nightlife venues. The precautions overlap: book your own ride, do not hail taxis in the street and use ATMs in daylight inside banks or malls.

How do I get home after the Metro closes?

The Metro stops at midnight. The Nochebús runs 00:00–05:00 on corridors including Insurgentes, Reforma and Eje Central for MXN 7. Otherwise use Uber, DiDi or Cabify, ordered from inside the venue.

What is the drinking age, and do clubs check ID?

The drinking age is 18 in every state. Clubs check, so bring ID or a passport copy. Tourist help is available on 078.

Which area is best for a first night out?

Roma. Avenida Álvaro Obregón puts Licorería Limantour, Tlecān and Departamento within a few minutes' walk, and Condesa is next door.
