Cologne nightlife starts with a small glass of beer. In the brewery taverns of the Altstadt, the Köbes brings 0.2-litre Kölsch until you put a beer mat on top, and most nights begin there. From there the city spreads out: cocktail bars in the Belgisches Viertel, student bars in the Kwartier Latäng, indie in the Südstadt and the clubs of Ehrenfeld, many of them in old factories and railway arches. Bootshaus, Germany's highest-placed club in DJ Mag's 2026 list, sits across the Rhine by the Mülheim harbour. Club doors open at 23:00, most close between 05:00 and 07:00, and entry is usually €10–20. Worth knowing: on Friday and Saturday nights the trams run all night, about every 30 minutes.
Ranked by popularity. Tap a card for opening hours, door tips, getting there and tickets.
For the drinks before and after. Hours, prices and the best nights are on each page.
The night starts in a brewery tavern, and the glasses are small. Kölsch comes in 0.2-litre Stangen, and the Köbes brings a fresh one as soon as yours is empty. A beer mat on top of the glass is the only way to stop. Früh am Dom, Päffgen and the Malzmühle have been pouring for more than a century, and the first round of many nights is served at their tables.
Ehrenfeld is where most of the clubs are. Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld sits under the railway arches, Helios37 and the Live Music Hall fill old factory halls, and Artheater and Odonien run club nights until 07:00. Many of these rooms are concert venues first, so check whether it is a gig or a party before you set off.
The doors are relaxed by German standards. Bootshaus turns away only people who look aggressive or too drunk, and most places want an 18+ photo ID and a ticket. Gewölbe is the exception: a strict door, and a sticker over your phone camera on the way in.
Four floors at Bootshaus, a brick tunnel at Gewölbe, and club nights until 07:00 at Artheater, Helios37 and Odonien.
Kölsch may only be brewed in and around Cologne, and the brewery taverns are a night out in their own right. Päffgen has brewed since 1883.
Tsunami Club in the Südstadt, Blue Shell since 1979, and Veedel Club, where Nirvana played in 1989.
The season opens at 11:11 on 11 November, and the street carnival runs from Weiberfastnacht on 4 February 2027.
Red Cat Lounge runs techno afterhours from 06:00 on Saturday and Sunday mornings.
Bumann & Sohn's weekend club bar is free, Tsunami parties start at €6, and a Kölsch in a local pub costs about €2.20–2.50.
Not for you if you want a glamorous, dressed-up club scene. The best nights here are in railway arches, old factories and cellars, and the beer comes in 0.2-litre glasses.
Kölsch and dinner in a brewery tavern in the Altstadt, or a beer garden if the weather holds.
Bars. Sixpack opens at 20:00 from Wednesday to Saturday, and the Belgian Quarter fills up.
Club doors open at Gewölbe, Artheater, Helios37, Odonien and Tsunami. Concerts in Ehrenfeld are finishing.
The floors fill. Trams keep running all night at the weekend.
Tsunami, the Live Music Hall party nights and Bumann & Sohn close. Gewölbe follows at 06:00.
The longest club nights finish. On Saturday and Sunday, Red Cat Lounge has already opened its afterhour at 06:00.
Number 11 in DJ Mag's 2026 club list and four floors by the Mülheim harbour. Take the tram to Köln Messe/Deutz and walk about 1.7 km, or ride bus 150 to Thermalbad.
Früh am Dom by the cathedral, the Malzmühle on the Heumarkt, then Päffgen on Friesenstraße, which pours its Kölsch only from the cask.
A gig at Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld or Helios37, then the free Friday and Saturday club bar at Bumann & Sohn, open until 05:00.
Gewölbe sits under the tracks of Köln West station, with club nights on Friday and Saturday from 23:00 to 06:00 and tickets at €12–20.
Carnival opens at 11:11 on 11 November. The street carnival starts on Thursday 4 February 2027 and peaks at the Rosenmontag parade on 8 February.
Red Cat Lounge on Luxemburger Straße runs techno from 06:00 to 18:00 on Sundays, after the clubs close.
Streets named after Belgian cities, bars around Brüsseler Platz, Little Link for serious cocktails and Sixpack for loud ones. Gewölbe is just north, under Köln West station.
The best place to go out in Cologne for clubs: Club Bahnhof Ehrenfeld, Helios37, the Live Music Hall, Artheater, Odonien and Bumann & Sohn, most near the Venloer Str./Gürtel stop.
The student quarter around Zülpicher Straße and Luxemburger Straße: cheap bars, Veedel Club, Blue Shell and the Red Cat Lounge afterhours.
Früh am Dom, the Malzmühle on the Heumarkt and Päffgen on Friesenstraße, plus GLORIA for gigs near Neumarkt. Touristy by the cathedral, but this is where Kölsch culture lives.
Tsunami Club for indie and alternative parties until 05:00, with Brauhaus Johann Schäfer for an early beer. Local, a little scruffy and good value.
The right bank has the city's biggest club, Bootshaus by the Mülheim harbour, and Lommerzheim, an old-school Kölsch pub in Deutz.
Most clubs are 18+ and want an official photo ID: Bootshaus accepts an ID card, passport or driving licence and nothing else. Dress codes are rare, and Bootshaus says it has none. What gets you turned away is looking aggressive or too drunk. Gewölbe is stricter and tapes over phone cameras, and Artheater lets people in by capacity, so busy nights mean a queue. Some parties set their own age rule, such as 29+ nights at Veedel Club.
Usually €10–20. Recent examples: €12–20 at Gewölbe, €14 at Artheater, €10–19 at Helios37 and €20 for a night at Odonien. Tsunami parties start at €6, and Bumann & Sohn's weekend club bar is free. Big Bootshaus nights sell out online, so buy ahead.
On the nights before Saturday, Sunday and public holidays, the Stadtbahn trams run all night, about every 30 minutes and on some lines every 15. Monday to Thursday most lines stop around 01:00. Night buses run hourly at the weekend. A single ticket within the city costs €4.00 and a 24-hour ticket €9.60.

Five Kölsch in a brewery tavern, the free club bar at Bumann & Sohn with a couple of drinks, and a €4 tram home.
Kölsch first, a €14–20 club ticket, a few drinks inside and a 24-hour ticket for €9.60.
A cocktail at Little Link, a headline night at Bootshaus and drinks until the trams take you home.
Otherwise the Köbes keeps bringing Kölsch. It is the only signal that you have had enough.
Many Ehrenfeld venues are concert halls first. Club nights usually start at 23:00, after the concert crowd leaves.
Headline nights sell out, as Chris Stassy did in October 2026. The club is also a long walk from the station.
Before Saturday, Sunday and holidays they run through the night. Monday to Thursday, most lines stop around 01:00.
Bootshaus accepts only an ID card, passport or driving licence. A photo on your phone will not do.
On Weiberfastnacht the Zülpicher Platz stop is not served from 09:00, and the Heumarkt stop can close when it is overcrowded.
Cologne's breweries signed the 16-paragraph Kölsch Convention on 6 March 1986, and the EU recognised Kölsch as a protected regional speciality in 1997.
In 1989 a then-unknown Nirvana played the Rose Club on Luxemburger Straße, the room that is now Veedel Club.
On 17 June 1999, during the G8 summit, Bill Clinton stopped at the Malzmühle on the Heumarkt for a Kölsch.
In 1884 the city council named the new streets west of the centre after Belgian and Dutch places, which is how the Belgisches Viertel got its name.
Most close between 05:00 and 07:00. Tsunami Club and the Live Music Hall finish party nights at 05:00, Gewölbe at 06:00, and Artheater, Helios37 and Odonien can run until 07:00. For clubs open late, Red Cat Lounge runs afterhours until 15:00 on Saturday and 18:00 on Sunday.
Ehrenfeld for clubs, the Belgisches Viertel for cocktail bars, the Kwartier Latäng for cheap student bars and the Altstadt for Kölsch in brewery taverns. Bootshaus, the biggest club, is across the Rhine in Mülheim.
At the weekend, by tram: on the nights before Saturday, Sunday and holidays the Stadtbahn runs all night, about every 30 minutes. Monday to Thursday most lines stop around 01:00. A single city ticket costs €4.00.
About €30 for a cheap night and €60 for a normal one. Club entry is usually €10–20, a 0.2-litre Kölsch from about €2.20 (more near the cathedral) and a cocktail €8–18.
For EDM and big-room techno, yes: it was Germany's highest-placed club in DJ Mag's Top 100 Clubs 2026, at number 11. Buy tickets online and plan the 1.7 km walk from Köln Messe/Deutz.
The season opens at 11:11 on 11 November. The street carnival runs from Weiberfastnacht, Thursday 4 February 2027, to Ash Wednesday on 10 February, with the Rosenmontag parade on 8 February.
