Tokyo nightlife runs on the train timetable. Most last trains leave between about 23:30 and 00:50, and the first run from about 05:00, so a club night means an early exit or a stay until morning. Clubs close at 04:30 or 05:00, many of them in basements in Shibuya, Kabukicho and Roppongi. The bars are the other half: five-seat counters in Golden Gai, yakitori alleys, hotel bars in Shinjuku and Ginza, and live houses in Shimokitazawa and Koenji. Club entry is usually ¥2,000–4,000 (€11–23), often with a drink included, and every club checks photo ID. Worth knowing: you must be 20 or older, and Japan's drug laws are severe.

The last train sets the night. Most lines stop between about 23:30 and 00:50, and the first trains run from about 05:00. Late-night express buses have been discontinued, so the choice is a taxi, with a 20% surcharge between 22:00 and 05:00, or staying until morning. Clubs close at 04:30 or 05:00 for that reason, and internet cafés and karaoke boxes cover the gap for those who want to sit it out.
The door is part of the night. Every club asks for photo ID and the age limit is 20. Some clubs also refuse sandals, and ATOM Tokyo does not allow visible tattoos, while WARP Shinjuku, ZEROTOKYO and SEL Octagon say they may refuse them. The party clubs include a drink in the ticket and charge less before midnight. The techno rooms price by event and sell advance tickets.
Bars are small and have their own rules. Golden Gai has more than 200 bars and many seat about five. Covers of ¥500–1,000 are common, a few bars take regulars only, and the yokocho alleys are mostly cash. Cocktail bars such as Bar Benfiddich seat eight and close around 01:00, so they are a first stop, not the last.
