Cape Town

Cape Town nightlife is concentrated in a few central streets and two coastal strips, and most of it runs from Thursday to Saturday. South Africa's drinking age is 18, and the City of Cape Town's liquor trading-hours schedule sets 02:00 as the latest standard closing time for on-consumption premises in general business zones. Clubs with extended permissions go later: Mødular says its licence allows trading until 04:00, and one Cape Tourism guide lists the Pink Candy Night Club and Club Paradise to 04:00. The central clubs are Mødular on Riebeek Street, Halo on Loop Street, District and Saint Champagne on Harrington Street, Club Paradise on Albertus Street and EVOL on Hope Street. Cocktail bars sit on Bree Street, Wale Street and Buitengracht Street, Long Street has bars such as The Waiting Room, and the sundowner rooftops are in Camps Bay and Sea Point. MyCiTi buses stop around 22:00, so the ride home is Uber, Bolt or a metered taxi. Worth knowing: carry ID, because Halo's website sets a 23+ door and Tiki Tomb admits no one under 25 after 22:00.

Closing time
02:00 — 04:00
The City of Cape Town's liquor trading-hours schedule lists 02:00 the following day as the latest standard closing time for on-consumption premises in general business zones, with a 30-minute allowance to finish a drink; the schedule is undated on the City's website. Venues with extended permissions trade later: Mødular says its licence allows trading until 04:00, and Cape Tourism lists Pink Candy Night Club on Fridays and Saturdays from 21:00 to 04:00. Halo closes at 02:00, and the bars in this guide mostly shut between 23:00 and 02:00.
€
Average entry
Free — R150
Bars list free entry: Cape Town Tourism's nightclubs and bars guide marks The Athletic Club & Social, Fable and The House of Machines as free. TravelGay lists R100 at the door for Pink Candy Night Club, and Mødular's Elevation Nights with FUNCTION on 31 October 2026 start at R150 on Xceed. Halo, Club Paradise and District price each event separately, through Howler, Xceed or the venue's own event page.
◈
Getting home
Uber, Bolt & metered taxi
Cape Tourism says MyCiTi buses stop around 22:00, and the UK Foreign Office advises against minibus taxis at night. Uber and Bolt are the standard way home: Cape Tourism gives about R50 to R150 for short trips, with Bolt quoting about R70 from the CBD to Clifton at midnight, and about R200 for a metered taxi from the CBD to Camps Bay. Surge pricing applies during rain and events. Match the plate and driver in the app before getting in and share the trip with a friend. Mødular says it works with local taxi drivers to offer rides home at prices comparable to Uber.
◑
Age limit
18+
South Africa's legal drinking age is 18: selling or supplying liquor to anyone under 18 is an offence under the national Liquor Act, and sellers must take reasonable steps to check age (Sunday Independent, 10 December 2025). Venues set higher limits: Halo's website says strictly 23+, and Time Out (March 2026) says Tiki Tomb admits no under-25s after 22:00.

Clubs

Ranked by popularity. Tap a card for opening hours, door tips, getting there and tickets.

What to expect

It is a city of separate strips. The clubs cluster in the city centre and District Six: Halo at 71 Loop Street, Mødular at 34 Riebeek Street, EVOL at 69 Hope Street, and District, Harrington's and Saint Champagne on Harrington Street, with Club Paradise on Albertus Street in the same District Six area. Cape Tourism names Bree Street and Long Street as the main hubs, Observatory as the youthful and affordable area, Sea Point and Camps Bay as relaxed coastal strips for sundowners, Kalk Bay and Muizenberg for casual live music, and Woodstock for converted warehouses, breweries and art-focused events. Most visitors pick one strip per night and take a ride between them.

Weekend nights, with a few midweek exceptions. Halo opens Thursday to Saturday on its own website, Mødular lists event nights on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 22:00, Club Paradise runs Thursday to Sunday, and Pink Candy opens Friday and Saturday from 21:00 to 04:00. Midweek there is Wednesday Tiki-Oke karaoke at Tiki Tomb from 20:00, a Thursday Takeover at Harrington's, and The Gin Bar, which opens at 17:00 Monday to Wednesday and 15:00 Thursday to Saturday. Bars close earlier than clubs: The Gin Bar at 01:00, Tiki Tomb and The Athletic Club & Social at 02:00, and the rooftops in Camps Bay and Sea Point at 23:00.

Load shedding has been quiet, but the night still needs planning. Eskom reported 441 consecutive days without load shedding on 4 August 2026, counting from 16 May 2025, and its winter outlook to 31 August projected none; that is the latest figure found. The UK Foreign Office says the threat of crime is higher in the dark, reports drink spiking, and warns that when outages do happen they can disable traffic lights, ATMs and mobile networks. Its advice is to book rides through an internationally recognised e-hailing app, check the vehicle registration and driver, and avoid minibus taxis at night.

At the door

Getting in

Bring ID: the legal drinking age is 18, but Halo's website says strictly 23+ and Tiki Tomb admits no under-25s after 22:00. Halo bans shorts, tracksuits and vests and requires closed shoes, and reserves the right of admission. Mødular has a well-enforced no-photos policy. Pink Candy does a full pat-down and bag check, and it is a smoking venue. Guides disagree on the dress code at Club Paradise, one saying none and one saying closed shoes, so closed shoes are the safe choice. Cape Tourism's general advice is that dress codes vary per venue, so check ahead.

What it costs to get in

Prices are set per event: Mødular's 31 October 2026 night started at R150 on Xceed, and TravelGay lists R100 at Pink Candy. Bars such as The Athletic Club & Social list free entry. On Numbeo (updated 21 October 2026) a draught pint averages R50 and an imported 12 oz bottle R60, and Tiki Tomb's happy-hour drinks were R50 in March 2026. Cape Tourism suggests carrying a card and some cash for tipping.

Getting home

MyCiTi stops around 22:00, so book Uber or Bolt in the app, check the plate, and share the trip. Short trips cost about R50 to R150, and a metered taxi from the CBD to Camps Bay about R200. Minibus taxis are not recommended at night. Emergency numbers are 10111 for police and 112 from a mobile.

What visitors get wrong

Check the night, not just the venue

Halo opens Thursday to Saturday, Mødular lists Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and District's events are ticketed separately, so look at the event page first.

Book the ride before you need it

Cape Tourism recommends planning Uber or Bolt rides in advance, matching the licence plate, and sharing the trip. Surge pricing applies in rain.

Keep the phone away at Mødular

The no-photos policy is enforced and keeps the dance floor free of screens.

Keep your drink with you

Cape Tourism says to keep your drink with you at all times, and the UK Foreign Office reports drink spiking involving robbery and sexual assault.

Carry a power bank

The UK Foreign Office advises a power bank and a torch in case of outages, which can disable ATMs and mobile networks.

Book tables in writing

Cape Tourism advises confirming bottle minimums in writing at Saint Champagne before sitting down.

Check a venue is still open

Fiction at 226 Long Street is listed as closed on Clubbable, and its former website domain now redirects to a domain-sale page. Resident Advisor's Cape Town guide reports that the One Park listening bar in Gardens and the 196 Victoria Listening Room are closing.

Why this city is like this

A basement disco turned techno club

Mødular opened in February 2017 in the shell of a former basement disco in the Foreshore, and Cape Town Magazine describes black-and-white checkered floors and strobe lighting. Its co-founders are Jed Cohen, Costa Chibwe and Patrick Tsipeng, and after Covid they took over the neighbouring Lido Bar.

A gin bar behind a chocolate café

The Gin Bar is entered through Honest Chocolate Café on Wale Street, and its house blends are named The Hope, The Head, The Heart, The Ambition and The Soul.

A tiki bar under a restaurant

Tiki Tomb is a basement bar reached through the wooden door to the left of BOMA on Bree, with 1930s tiki decor and seven tiki cocktails.

A new name for an old address

Pink Candy Night Club at 120 Strand Street was formerly called the Pink Panther Social Club, according to TravelGay.

A ninth-floor deck

The Nines in Sea Point has a 200 square metre deck on the ninth floor of Station House, opened in November 2022.
