Where to go out
Mexican nightlife starts late and starts at a table. A night moves from dinner to a bar or cantina with mezcal, tequila or beer, and reaches the clubs after 23:00. Most bars close between 02:00 and 03:00. Some clubs in Roma, Condesa and Juárez stay open until 04:00 or later at weekends.
Each region plays a different game. Mexico City nightlife runs on cocktail bars in Roma Norte and Condesa, LGBTQ+ clubs in Juárez, cantinas and mariachi in the Centro, and quieter hotel bars in Polanco. Cancún and Playa del Carmen are resort party towns, Tulum puts parties in the jungle, and Guadalajara is the home of mariachi, tequila and birria.
The one thing visitors get wrong is the drink and the ride. Criminals sometimes drug drinks, and methanol in some alcohol has killed people. Robbers sometimes pose as taxi drivers. Public drinking is banned almost everywhere. Use ride-hailing apps, watch drinks being poured and stay on busy streets after dark.
