Sydney nightlife is spread across districts rather than one strip. The early evening belongs to rooftop and basement bars in the CBD and on the harbour, the clubs sit on Oxford Street, in Kings Cross and around Darling Harbour, and Newtown and Enmore hold the live-music pubs. The lockout that once stopped entry at 1:30 am is gone, and in January 2026 the state announced it was removing the last 3:30 am last-drinks rule. Weekend rooms such as Club 77 and Carousel list closes at 05:00. Entry is usually A$15–40 (€9–25). Worth knowing: trains mostly stop between midnight and 04:30, so plan on a NightRide bus, Uber or DiDi home.

Sydney is a city of districts, and each does a different night. Oxford Street and Darlinghurst have the queer venues and the late dance floors, Kings Cross has ticketed techno on Bayswater Road, and the CBD has rooftop and basement bars from Clarence Street to The Rocks. Newtown and Enmore are for pubs and live music, and Bondi, Coogee and Manly are for an ocean or harbour drink earlier in the night. Pick one district per night and take a ride between them.
The lockout is gone, but a late licence is not automatic. The 1:30 am lockout left the CBD and Oxford Street in January 2020 and Kings Cross in 2021. On 21 January 2026 the NSW Government announced it was removing the final lockout conditions, including the 3:30 am last-drinks rule, in those former precincts. The release gave no start date, so each venue's own licence still sets its hours: Club 77 lists 05:00, Waywards lists 04:00 from Wednesday to Saturday and The Abercrombie holds a 24-hour licence.
Plan the ride home before the first drink. Most trains stop between midnight and 04:30, when NightRide buses take over, and some ferries finish between midnight and 01:00.
