The 9 best bars in Sydney

The 9 best bars in Sydney, ranked: Maybe Sammy, Pleasure Club, Razz Room, Old Mate's Place and more, with closing times, prices and who should skip each one.

6 min read

The best bars in Sydney are spread across the city rather than packed onto one street. The CBD has rooftop and basement bars on York, Clarence and George streets, The Rocks has a 1950s-style hotel bar and Opera Bar sits beside the Opera House. Newtown and Enmore have a basement licensed to 04:00, a Martini bar and a whisky bar, and Manly has a speakeasy a ferry ride from Circular Quay.

This list ranks nine of them. Each entry gives the closing time, what the door expects and one honest reason to skip it. The basics: where closing times are published they run from 01:00 to 04:00, a cocktail often costs A$20 or more, and several bars cut prices between 16:00 and 18:00. When you are ready to dance, see our list of the best clubs in Sydney.

How we picked

We ranked bars on five things: drinks, room, crowd, late licence and door. Drinks means a menu with a point of view, whether that is Martinis, daiquiris or whisky. Room means a space with character. Crowd means people who came for the place. Late licence means a close at 01:00 or later. Door means you can predict whether you will get in. Every bar here was checked against Time Out's 2026 guides or other 2025 and 2026 listings, and the prices we quote are the ones those guides publish. We do not take payment for placement.

Pick one cluster per night. In the CBD, Razz Room on York Street, Old Mate's Place on Clarence Street and Joji on George Street are minutes apart, Maybe Sammy is in The Rocks and Opera Bar is at Circular Quay. In Newtown, Pleasure Club is on Wilson Street and Bar Planet and Silver's Motel are on Enmore Road. Two unranked bars are worth a stop: Jangling Jack's in Potts Point has a happy hour from 16:00 to 18:00 every day, and Tio's Cerveceria in Surry Hills is a tequila bar with more than 100 tequilas.

Check the way home before you order. Most trains stop between midnight and 04:30, NightRide buses leave from stops near Town Hall, light rail stops at 01:00 and some ferry routes finish between midnight and 01:00, which matters for Manly. Uber and DiDi surge late at weekends.

Sydney's bars work best as a route. Start early at a harbour terrace or a happy hour, move to a rooftop or a Newtown basement and keep the club for after midnight.
