What to expect

Argentine nightlife runs on a late clock. Bars fill from about 22:00, and boliches, the nightclubs, open around 02:00. A dance floor that is empty at midnight is full by 03:00, and many clubs stay open until 06:00 or 07:00. Before the club comes the previa, drinks with friends, often fernet and Coke.

A night is really two nights. The bar night happens in Palermo Soho and Palermo Hollywood. The club night starts near 02:00, in a boliche in Palermo or on the Costanera Norte by the river. Mendoza and Córdoba run late too, on a smaller scale.

The mistake is arriving at midnight. Use the early hours for dinner and a bar. Do not hunt for a street-rate bargain either: in October 2026 the official and informal dollar rates were within about 1 per cent of each other, near ARS 1,540. Cards work in most places.

Who it is for

Night owls

Clubs open around 02:00 and run until 06:00 or later.

Electronic and Latin dancers

Electro, techno, reggaeton and cumbia nights, from small rooms in Palermo to larger clubs on the Costanera Norte.

Tango dancers

Milongas, the social tango dances, run in San Telmo, Palermo and Villa Crespo.

Wine drinkers

Mendoza is in the largest wine region in South America, and the bars on Avenida Arístides Villanueva make a slower night.

Festival goers

Cosquín Rock in February, Lollapalooza Argentina in March and the Gualeguaychú Carnival each summer.

LGBTQ+ travellers

Buenos Aires holds its Pride march on the first Saturday of November.

Not for you if you want to be in bed by midnight or get home by metro. The Subte stops in the late evening, and clubs do not open until about 02:00.

Festivals and the weeks to avoid

January to February — Carnaval de Gualeguaychú, Entre Ríos

Saturday-night parades at the corsódromo, about 230 km from Buenos Aires. The 2026 season ran 11 nights, from 3 January to 28 February.

February — Cosquín Rock, Santa María de Punilla

Two days of rock and alternative at an airfield in the Córdoba hills. The 2026 edition ran 14 and 15 February.

March — Fiesta Nacional de la Vendimia, Mendoza

The wine harvest festival, with a float parade on Friday night and the Acto Central on Saturday. In 2026 these fell on 6 and 7 March.

March — Lollapalooza Argentina, San Isidro

Three days at the Hipódromo de San Isidro, north of Buenos Aires. The 2026 edition ran 13 to 15 March.

August — Tango BA Festival y Mundial, Buenos Aires

About two weeks of tango across more than 50 venues, with free entry. The 2026 edition ran 19 August to 2 September.

November — Pride March, Buenos Aires

On the first Saturday of November. In 2025 it ran from Plaza de Mayo along Avenida de Mayo to Congress.

Weekends that work

2 nights — Buenos Aires

Night one: bars on Thames and Honduras streets in Palermo Soho, then a boliche from 02:00. Night two: a milonga in San Telmo, then a club on the Costanera Norte.

3 nights — Buenos Aires in full

Thursday for bars and live music in Palermo, Friday for a boliche, Saturday for a big club by the river. Sleep until the afternoon.

4 nights — Buenos Aires and Mendoza

Two nights in Buenos Aires, then a flight of about two hours to Mendoza for wine bars. Weekend nights there get going after 23:00.

7 nights — Buenos Aires, Córdoba and Mendoza

Three nights in Buenos Aires, two in Córdoba for students and cuarteto, two in Mendoza. The distances are 700 km and more, so fly.

8 nights — Argentina and Brazil

Four nights in Buenos Aires, then a flight of about three hours to Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo for four. The Brazil guide has hours and prices.

Nights people fly in for

A boliche at 03:00

The main event. Arrive after 02:00 in Palermo or on the Costanera Norte and stay until the lights come up.

A milonga in San Telmo

Social tango, open to watchers and beginners. City-run events can be free with a reservation.

Thames and Honduras streets

Cocktail bars and boutique clubs in Palermo Soho, the place for the bar half of the night.

Avenida Corrientes after midnight

Theatres, pizzerias, cafés and bookshops stay open late near the Obelisco.

Mendoza wine bars

Tasting flights and long evenings on Avenida Arístides Villanueva.

Cuarteto in Córdoba

Upbeat dance-hall music that was born in Córdoba and is still danced there.

What you eat after

Pizza

Porteño pizza, by the slice or whole, often with fugazzeta (onion and cheese). Pizzerias on Avenida Corrientes stay open late.

Choripán

A chorizo sausage in a bread roll with chimichurri, sold from street grills.

Empanadas

Baked or fried pastries filled with beef, ham and cheese or humita. Ordered by the half dozen from places that deliver late.

Lomito

A steak sandwich with ham, cheese, egg and tomato. Sold at snack bars and all-night cafés.

Medialunas

Small croissants with café con leche. The sunrise breakfast in cafés that open early.

Door culture and what not to do

Dress smart casual

Sports gear and flip-flops can get you turned away at better venues. Clubs are 18 and over.

Guest lists beat the queue

Many clubs post lists on Instagram. A message can get free or cheaper entry before about 01:30.

Entry may include a drink

Larger clubs charge a cover that sometimes includes one drink. Check before you pay.

Tip about ten per cent

Tip in cash in bars and restaurants. A cubierto on a restaurant bill is a cover charge, not a tip.

Walk past show offers

Street invitations to a show around Corrientes, Florida and Lavalle streets are lures. Walk on.

Phones and bags

Thieves on motorbikes, the motochorros, snatch phones and bags from pedestrians. Do not resist a robbery.

Drugs are illegal

The UK government warns that possession of even very small quantities can mean a lengthy prison sentence.

Do

  • Join guest lists before 01:30
  • Carry small notes and check your change
  • Book radio taxis or app rides
  • Eat late and take a previa first

Do not

  • Show your phone on the street
  • Arrive at a boliche before 01:30
  • Follow street invitations to shows
  • Buy or carry drugs

ID, transport and getting home

Getting home

The Subte stops around 22:00 to 23:00. Colectivo buses run 24 hours on many routes with a SUBE card, so load it before you go out. Uber, Cabify and DiDi work, but a May 2026 court ruling said they must follow taxi rules. A radio taxi with a visible logo is the safe fallback.

ID

The legal drinking age in Argentina is 18, and clubs are 18 and over. Carry photo ID.

Paying

Cards are widely accepted, but carry cash too. The largest note is 20,000 pesos, about €12. In October 2026 the official rate was about ARS 1,540 per US dollar and the informal rate almost the same. Change money at a bank or casa de cambio with your passport. ATM limits can be low.

Tickets

Bars sell no tickets. Clubs charge at the door or take lists through Instagram. Festivals and large shows sell online.

Drinking outside

National law 24,788 bans drinking alcohol in the street unless the local authority allows it. Enforcement varies, so drink inside or on a terrace.

Safety

The US rates Argentina Level 1 but warns of street crime in Buenos Aires and Mendoza. It lists San Telmo, La Boca, Retiro, Palermo and Florida Street as higher-crime areas. Use cars between venues, and never leave a drink unattended.

Smoking

Banned indoors in bars and clubs under national law 26,687, in force since 2011. Smokers go outside.

Language

Spanish, with the Rioplatense accent: vos for you, and ll sounded like sh. English works in Palermo bars. La lista is the guest list.
