Maastricht

Maastricht nightlife is compact and café-led. The old brown cafés and the speakeasy bars sit around the Vrijthof and the Markt, the dance cafés and Cliniq run along Platielstraat, and Wyck on the east bank has pub-cafés with DJs. Complex, a large electronic club ten minutes' walk from the station, runs nights to 05:00. Most cafés close at 02:00 or 03:00, and the city has a large international student population. Entry is paid per event: a Complex night with Michel de Hey cost €25 to €29, while the cafés list no cover charge. Worth knowing: Vastelaovend, the Maastricht carnival, runs from Sunday 7 to Tuesday 9 February 2027.

What to expect

Maastricht goes out in cafés first. Cafés cluster around the main squares, and most close at 02:00 on weeknights and 03:00 on Friday and Saturday. In den Ouden Vogelstruys on the Vrijthof clears its tables for dancing on weekend evenings, and Café Van Bommel on Platielstraat turns up the music from 22:00.

There is one big club and a few rooms with a programme. Complex holds up to 1,680 people, is 18+ and stops entry at 03:00. Muziekgieterij in the Sphinx quarter runs concerts and Midnight club nights, and Cliniq on Platielstraat opens only from Thursday to Saturday. Check the agenda before you pick a night.

The calendar has a carnival peak. Vastelaovend runs from Sunday 7 to Tuesday 9 February 2027, and the season opens on 11 November. It is a three-day festival, mostly outdoors, and Arriva runs late-night Borrelbuses during it. Confirm each venue's hours for those days.

Jazz and live music fans

Café Forum hosts Maastricht Jazz Club every Monday, and Muziekgieterij's autumn 2026 programme is full of concerts. Behind The Bar hip-hop and Band Night are free.

LGBTQ+ visitors

Sway Café on the Markt is a gay bar and café listed by Gayout. We could not confirm its weekly hours, so check swaycafe.nl before a late visit.

Visitors from Belgium and Germany

Liège is 25.5 km and Aachen 31.0 km from Maastricht in a straight line. Trains run south to Liège, and Aachen is reached via Heerlen. We could not confirm late train times, so check before you plan a late night.

Not for you if you want a row of big clubs. Complex is the only large club here, and the rest of the night happens in cafés and small rooms.

The neighbourhoods

Vrijthof & Markt — squares, brown cafés and speakeasies

The Vrijthof is the largest square in the centre. In den Ouden Vogelstruys is at Vrijthof 15, Somewhere in the Middle at Vrijthof 8, Sway Café at Markt 39 and De Gouverneur at Boschstraat 105a. Expect terraces in dry weather and closing at 02:00 or 03:00.

Platielstraat & Sint Amorsplein — dance cafés and cocktails

Café Van Bommel, Cliniq and Bar Nola are all on Platielstraat, and Café Falstaff is on Sint Amorsplein. This is the strip for dancing in the centre, so it is busiest from Thursday to Saturday.

Jekerkwartier & Stokstraat — small cafés and music

The Jeker Quarter has a French feel and occasional live music. Café Forum is at Sint Pieterstraat 4 and Café de Pieter at number 22. Stokstraat is a high-end shopping street with small cafés, and the terraces on Onze Lieve Vrouweplein face the Basilica.

Wyck & Céramique — east bank pubs and a big club

Wyck is the old quarter on the right bank of the Maas. Café Zondag is on Wycker Brugstraat, Mr. Smith on Rechtstraat, and Complex on the Griend, about ten minutes' walk from the station. Céramique is the modern district along the river.

Sphinx & Bassin — pop venue and rooftop

The Sphinx quarter is a former factory district north of the centre. Muziekgieterij is at Boschstraat 5 in the old Timmerfabriek, and Bold Rooftopbar is at Sphinxcour 9A. The restored Bassin harbour has bars and restaurants.

At the door

By law you must be 18 to be served alcohol, and indoor smoking is banned in cafés, including smoking rooms. Terraces are allowed with exceptions.

Combine it with another Dutch city

NS Intercity trains run from Maastricht to Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Den Bosch and Utrecht. See our guides to Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Utrecht, or browse the Netherlands.

Why this city is like this

A secret prince

The Prince Carnival is chosen in secret by the Tempeleers, a carnival association, and unmasked on the Markt. On the Saturday before carnival the mayor hands over the key to the city at 15:11.

The oldest café in the Netherlands

The city's tourist board calls In den Ouden Vogelstruys on the Vrijthof the oldest café in the country. Lonely Planet describes swords, medals and 1950s portraits of regulars on the walls.

The smallest café, too

Petit Café Moriaan on the Op de Thermen square is described as the smallest café in the Netherlands, with a terrace under vines.

A factory with a rooftop

The Social Hub occupies the former Royal Sphinx factory, in the Eiffel Building. Bold Rooftopbar on top is listed as the first rooftop bar in Maastricht.
