Los Angeles nightlife is spread across separate districts rather than one centre, and the clock is the one rule they share. California law bans alcohol sales between 02:00 and 06:00 and sets the drinking age at 21, so bars close by 02:00 at the latest, while the big dance clubs, Exchange LA, Academy LA and Avalon, run their Friday and Saturday nights from 22:00 to about 03:00. Hollywood has the dance floors: Sound on Las Palmas Avenue, Avalon on Vine Street and Academy LA on Hollywood Boulevard. Downtown has Exchange LA in a former stock exchange and cocktail bars on Spring Street and in the Arts District. Silver Lake has Los Globos, Echo Park has Thunderbolt, and Koreatown has nightly karaoke at Brass Monkey and a disco and house night at Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Metro rail stops around midnight, so the ride home is mostly a rideshare. Worth knowing: bring a physical photo ID, because the main club nights in this guide are 21+.

It is a city of districts, not one nightlife centre. Hollywood, Downtown, Silver Lake and Echo Park, Koreatown and the La Cienega strip each have their own nights, and moving between them means a car or a rideshare. Hollywood is the one district where several clubs share the same few streets: Sound is on Las Palmas Avenue and Avalon on Vine Street, both just north of Hollywood Boulevard, and Academy LA is on the boulevard itself. Most visitors pick one district per night.
The clock is the same everywhere. The California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control says the lawful window for sales runs from 06:00 to 02:00 the following day, and that a venue may not let anyone drink on the premises between 02:00 and 06:00. A 04:00 last call has been proposed more than once. Assembly Bill 342, which would let cities create hospitality zones, passed the Assembly 50 votes to 11 on 3 June 2025, but its first Senate hearing was cancelled on 8 July 2025 at the author's request, according to LegiScan. The one 04:00 exception reported is a small club inside the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, covered by a 2024 bill (AB 3206).
Dance clubs are weekend rooms. Exchange LA and Academy LA open on Friday and Saturday at 22:00 and close at 03:00, with extra event nights. Sound programmes Thursday to Saturday plus the occasional Wednesday, Avalon's calendar also lists Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday dates, and Catch One and Los Globos run by event. Bars keep shorter hours: in Time Out's list updated on 8 October 2026, the cocktail bars close between 00:00 and 02:00, and most of them stay open until 01:00 or 02:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
