Chicago

Chicago nightlife is a set of neighbourhood pockets rather than one strip, and it has a strong claim to house music: The Warehouse opened at 206 South Jefferson Street in 1977, and the style is reported to be named after a shortened form of that club's name. Today the late rooms are spread across the city. River North has Spybar on Franklin Street and Sound-Bar on Ontario Street, Prysm sits on Kingsbury Street, Smartbar has run in the basement of the Metro building in Lakeview since 1982, Radius holds 3,800 people in a former steel factory on Cermak Road, and Wicker Park, Logan Square and Fulton Market cover cocktails and live shows. Alcohol is sold to people aged 21 and over. A standard licence ends sales at 02:00 (03:00 on Sundays), and a late-hour licence extends that to 04:00 (05:00 on Sundays). Worth knowing: the Red and Blue Lines run all night, but most other L lines and buses do not.

Closing time
02:00 — 05:00
A standard Chicago liquor licence closes at 02:00 Monday to Saturday and 03:00 on Sunday. A late-hour licence runs to 04:00 Monday to Saturday and 05:00 on Sunday, which fits the 04:00 and 05:00 closing times listed by Smartbar, Spybar and Prysm. Most bars in this guide stop earlier, between 23:00 and 02:00, and Radius events usually end between 02:00 and 03:30.
€
Average entry
Free — $30
Bars are free to enter. Club tickets listed for October and November 2026 run from $10 to $30: Smartbar $15–25, Spybar $15–30 and Sound-Bar $10–20 on one November guest-list night. Radius prices each event through AXS and Subterranean through SeeTickets.

Getting home
L train, night buses & ride-hailing
The CTA says the Red and Blue Lines run 24 hours a day and that some Night Owl bus routes run around the clock, while most other trains and buses stop in the late evening. An L ride costs $2.50 with Ventra and includes up to two transfers within two hours. Check the CTA trip planner for the night you go.
◑
Age limit
21+
Alcohol is sold only to people aged 21 or over. Clubs ask for a physical government photo ID such as a driver's licence, state ID or passport, and Smartbar and Prysm say there are no exceptions and may ask for a second ID. Radius and Subterranean set age limits per event, so check the listing.

What to expect

It is a night of several small centres. Chicago is large and the clubs are spread out: Spybar and Sound-Bar in River North, Prysm on Kingsbury Street, Smartbar in Lakeview, Radius on Cermak Road next to Chinatown and Subterranean in Wicker Park. Pick one neighbourhood per night and plan the way home before you go.

Friday and Saturday carry the late clubs. Smartbar, Spybar, Prysm and Sound-Bar list 22:00 openings, with closing at 04:00 on Friday and 05:00 on Saturday. Smartbar and Prysm also run on Sundays, with the Queen! night at Smartbar and Sundown Sundaze at Prysm. The bars in this guide close earlier: Hopleaf at 23:00 or 00:00, The Violet Hour at 01:00 and Estereo at 02:00. The Green Mill is the late exception, listed by Time Out to 04:00 on Friday and 05:00 on Saturday.

House is the local speciality, but the programme is wider. Smartbar's story starts with house. Radius lists Carl Cox on 7 November 2026 and Ben Klock on 27 November, Prysm lists Dixon on 30 October, Hydrate in Northalsted mixes drag shows with DJ nights, and Subterranean runs concerts and club nights in the same building.

Doors are strict on age and mixed on dress. Every club here needs a physical photo ID. Spybar bans flip-flops, open-toed footwear and work boots, Sound-Bar asks guests to dress to impress, and Smartbar and Prysm publish no dress code. Coat check is $3 to $6 at the clubs that list a price.

At the door

Getting in

Alcohol is sold only to people aged 21 and over, and every club in this guide checks. Smartbar requires one valid physical federal or state photo ID, and Prysm and Smartbar both say there are no exceptions. Subterranean accepts physical or official digital IDs and does not accept photos or screenshots. Hydrate asks for a valid physical ID. Radius accepts a driver's licence, state ID, passport or armed forces ID and may ask for a second ID. Spybar's dress code bars flip-flops, open-toed footwear and work boots. Prysm and Radius refuse bags larger than 16 x 16 x 8 inches, and Smartbar needs bags above 9 x 11 inches checked.

What it costs to get in

Bars are free. Smartbar tickets were $15–25 for October 2026, Spybar's Dice tickets $15–30, and Sound-Bar charged $10 to $20 on a November guest-list night. Coat check costs $5 at Smartbar, Spybar and Prysm, $6 at Radius, $4 at some Subterranean shows and $3 at Hydrate from November to May. Smartbar's door tickets are cash only, and its box office charges 3% on cards.

Getting home

The Red and Blue Lines run all night, and an L ride costs $2.50 with Ventra. Blue Line owl service at Damen runs from 00:10 to 05:10 on weekdays at 10 to 30 minute intervals, according to Wikipedia. Other lines stop in the late evening, so late finishes in River North or Lakeview need a train transfer to a 24-hour line, a Night Owl bus or ride-hailing.

What visitors get wrong

Bring cash to Smartbar's door

Door tickets at Smartbar are cash only. The box office takes cash with no fee or card with a 3% fee, and the coat check takes cards only.

Buy ahead at Spybar

Spybar says door prices vary with demand and space, and that buying an advance ticket or arriving early is cheaper and improves the chance of entry.

Pack light

Prysm and Radius refuse backpacks and bags larger than 16 x 16 x 8 inches. Smartbar needs bags above 9 x 11 inches checked, and Spybar's coat check is compulsory.

Check the age on Radius and Subterranean tickets

Both venues set the age per event. Radius lists most dance nights as 18+ in third-party guides, and Subterranean lists All Ages, 17+ or 21+.

Plan the last train

Only the Red and Blue Lines run 24 hours. If your club is on another line, check the CTA planner or book ride-hailing before 02:00.

Book Cindy's early and expect an early close

Reservations open 14 days ahead and walk-ins are welcome, but the bar closes at 23:00 or 00:00 and can close for private events.

Why this city is like this

The club that named a genre

The Warehouse opened in 1977 at 206 South Jefferson Street, with Frankie Knuckles as its first musical director. Chicago renamed a block of Jefferson Street Frankie Knuckles Way on 25 August 2004, and the building became a Chicago Landmark on 21 June 2023.

Smartbar's early house link

Smartbar opened in 1982, and Techno Airlines says Frankie Knuckles played there regularly. Festival Insider called it in 2022 the only remaining club from the early house era.

One owner, two clubs

Pollstar reported in 2020 that Nick Karounos, behind Radius, also owns Concord Music Hall and Prysm. Radius opened on 29 February 2020 with Dillon Francis.

A Prohibition-era lounge in Uptown

Wikipedia says the Green Mill site goes back to 1898 in city records, though 1907 is often cited, and that the current building dates from 1935. A curved booth is known as Al Capone's booth, although the building was not on the site before 1935.

Closed rooms still appear in old listings

Berlin nightclub closed on 19 November 2023 after 40 years, and Axios reported in April 2026 that the space would reopen as the cocktail bar Belmont and the dance club Decibel. Studio Paris closed in February 2019, Time Out labels The Mid and Primary as closed, and the Holiday Club in Uptown closed on 17 May 2026.
