Where to go out
South Korean nightlife is a chain of rounds, not one stop. A night runs in stages: dinner with soju or beer, a second bar or a chicken-and-beer place, then a club or a noraebang, the private karaoke room. In Seoul, bars stay open until about 02:00 to 04:00 and weekend clubs until 05:00 or 06:00. The first subway train leaves at about 05:30, and many people wait for it.
Seoul nightlife splits into three districts. Hongdae is the student and indie district, with a 24-hour club street and covers of ₩15,000 to 20,000. Itaewon is the international and LGBTQ+ district, with techno and relaxed doors. Gangnam is the showpiece, with strict dress codes and covers from ₩30,000. Busan, about two and a half hours away by KTX, is the beach version.
The thing visitors get wrong is the door and the law. Clubs want your passport, not a photocopy, and the drinking age is 19 counted by birth year. Gangnam doors enforce dress codes. Drugs are strictly policed, and visitors have been detained on drug tests alone.
Weekend clubs in Hongdae and Gangnam run to 05:00 or 06:00.
Itaewon has the underground scene, with clubs such as Cakeshop.
The rounds system suits groups. Soju is about ₩5,000 a bottle, and chicken-and-beer places are everywhere.
Hongdae is the home of Korean indie music, with live clubs across the district.
Itaewon's Homo Hill is the centre of Seoul's gay nightlife, and the Seoul Queer Culture Festival runs in early summer.
Noraebang rooms stay open 24 hours, and gimbap, tteokbokki and haejangguk keep coming until dawn.
Not for you if you want to get home cheaply at 01:00. Trains stop around midnight, so the choice is a taxi or waiting for the first train at about 05:30.

Taxis cost about ₩20,000 across town, with a night surcharge. Kakao T is the main app. Drivers often speak little English, so show the address in Korean.
The drinking age is 19, counted by year of birth. Clubs want your passport. By law you must carry some form of ID.
Cards work almost everywhere. Some clubs want cash for the cover, and tent bars prefer it. A T-money card covers subways and buses.
Most club nights charge at the door. Gangnam tables are booked ahead. Festivals sell online.
Convenience stores sell alcohol round the clock and have tables outside. Drinking in public is generally tolerated, but some parks, squares and beaches have local bans, so check the signs.
Crime against visitors is uncommon, but assaults and thefts happen around bars and in Itaewon. Use licensed taxis or public transport at night. On Halloween and New Year's Eve the lanes of Itaewon fill; a crowd crush there on 29 October 2022 killed more than 150 people.
