Rio de Janeiro nightlife is built on live music more than on queues. Samba houses around the Arcos da Lapa fill from 20:00, Leblon and Santa Teresa keep their tables on the pavement, and the clubs that run to sunrise sit in the port zone and Botafogo. Bars close between 01:00 and 04:00, while club nights such as D-Edge Rio run from 23:00 to 07:00. Club entry is usually R$30–100 (€5.50–18), and Lapa samba houses add a cover of about R$20–40 (€3.50–7). The metro stops at midnight and phone theft is the main risk, so plan every late journey as a car ride. Worth knowing: order Uber or 99 in the app and match the plate before you get in.

Rio goes out for the music, not for the DJ. Samba, choro and forró houses run most nights in Lapa, Centro and Copacabana, and the band matters more than the door. Rio Scenarium opens at 19:00 from Wednesday to Friday, and Carioca da Gema starts its shows at 20:30 on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
The clubs are few, and they run late. D-Edge Rio and Trauma are two of the five rooms in Resident Advisor's Rio guide, and their nights run from 22:00 or 23:00 to 05:00 or 07:00. Our Brazil guide puts it simply: São Paulo has the clubs and Rio has the street.
Getting home is part of the plan. The metro stops at midnight, phone snatching is common, and the UK government warns of unlicensed taxis and fake ride-hailing accounts. Use Uber or 99 door to door, match the plate and keep your phone inside until you are in the car.
Rio Scenarium, Carioca da Gema and Beco do Rato run live bands in Lapa, and the Pedra do Sal roda is free on Monday evenings.
Circo Voador, Fundição Progresso, Audio Rebel and Blue Note Rio all had dated 2026 shows, with tickets from about R$25.
D-Edge Rio runs Friday and Saturday from 23:00 to 07:00, Trauma books dub soundsystems and Club 63 runs electronic nights in Botafogo.
Leblon's Rua Dias Ferreira holds Liz and Boteco Belmonte, and Jobi pours draught beer until 03:00 or 04:00.
Pink Flamingo in Copacabana runs drag, pop and Latin nights, with tickets from R$30.
Bosque Bar's open-air nights run from Thursday to Sunday, if everyone is 18 and dressed to the entry rules.
Not for you if you want to walk between bars at 2 a.m. Rio is spread out, the metro stops at midnight and street theft is real, so every late move is a car ride.
Draught beer and bolinhos at a boteco in Leblon or Santa Teresa. Liz opens at 18:00.
Samba houses open. Rio Scenarium opens at 19:00 midweek and Carioca da Gema at 19:30.

Circo Voador and Fundição Progresso sit on Rua dos Arcos, and Fundição lists dated shows into 2027.

Armazém São Thiago, known as Bar do Gomes, has served on Rua Áurea since 1919, and Bar do Mineiro is on Rua Paschoal Carlos Magno.
Rio Scenarium, Carioca da Gema, Beco do Rato, Circo Voador and Fundição Progresso are all within a few streets of the Arcos da Lapa. Take a car to the door and a car home.
Armazém São Thiago and Bar do Mineiro fill their pavements at the weekend, above all on Sundays. Use a car up the hill and back at night.
The Monday roda at Pedra do Sal, Trauma on Rua do Carmo, and Mergulho Bar and Firma in the Beco do Bragança area. Busy by day, thin at night.
D-Edge Rio on Avenida Rodrigues Alves and Sacadura 154 on Rua Sacadura Cabral. Plan a car both ways.
Club 63 for electronic nights and Audio Rebel for indie and rock. A residential neighbourhood with restaurants for the early evening.
Blue Note Rio on Avenida Atlântica, Pink Flamingo on Rua Raul Pompeia, Club Substation on Rua Siqueira Campos and Bip Bip on Rua Almirante Gonçalves.
Nosso in Ipanema, then Liz, Boteco Belmonte, Jobi and Academia da Cachaça in Leblon, with Bosque Bar for an open-air night.
Clubs and late events are 18+ and check ID, so carry photo ID. Bosque Bar refuses under-18s even with a parent, and it also refuses flip-flops, sleeveless shirts, team jerseys and outside drinks. Some venues sell entry by name list or as a consumação, a minimum spend credited against drinks, so ask when you buy. Samba houses and bars rarely set a dress code, but beachwear is out of place after dark.

The metro runs 05:00 to midnight, and 07:00 to 23:00 on Sundays and holidays. After that, use Uber or 99 in the app, check the plate and driver before you get in, and avoid unlicensed taxis. A 15 to 20 minute ride at night costs about R$25–70 (€4.50–12).

The UK government warns that unlicensed taxis and fake ride-hailing accounts have been used in robberies. Order in the app and match the plate and driver.
Thieves target phones, particularly between 16:00 and 21:00 according to the UK guidance. If you are robbed, hand it over and do not resist.
Both governments warn of drink spiking, and the UK also warns of methanol in adulterated drinks. Choose beer or sealed bottles, and be wary of drinks or lifts from people you have just met.
Most club nights are 18+, but Circo Voador sets the rating per event. Bosque Bar refuses under-18s even with a guardian.
The UK advice, updated on 7 October 2026, is to avoid all favelas, including tours. The US lists Brazil at Level 2 and favelas at Level 4. Check that your GPS route does not cut through one.
It is a long ride west of the south-zone bars; metro Line 4 reaches Jardim Oceânico. We found no club or bar there with a verifiable 2026 programme, so none is listed.
It began in 1982 on the Arpoador peninsula, and the city later gave it a permanent site beside the Arcos da Lapa.
The Copacabana bar, founded in 1968, lets you take a drink from the fridge and pay the owner at the end. It was declared cultural heritage of Rio in 2010.
The state heritage institute recognised it in 1984. The area was known as Little Africa, and sambistas such as Donga and Pixinguinha played there.
It has done so since 1997. In 2027 Carnival runs from the afternoon of 5 February to midday on 10 February, and Viradouro won the Special Group in 2026.

With care. Use ride-hailing, keep your phone hidden, watch your drink and stay in busy areas. The UK advice was updated on 7 October 2026 and the US rates Brazil Level 2.
