Techno and electronic club in a basement on Maximiliansplatz, open since 2005, with club nights from 23:00 and tickets from about €10.
Rote Sonne opened on 5 August 2005 in the basement of a café that was destroyed in the Second World War, on Maximiliansplatz in the old town. It is named after Rudolf Thome's 1970 film, holds 300 to 400 people and was named best club in Bavaria in November 2024. Weekends are mostly electronic: techno, drum and bass, house and electro, with concerts during the week.
Club nights start at 23:00, and advance tickets cost about €10–16. On Wednesdays the queer party Garry Klein, which moved here when Harry Klein closed in 2023, starts at 22:00 from €4. Pacha shares the address, but the crowds rarely mix. Not for you if you want space: it is a small, dark room and it fills up.
Electronic and techno club in a Maximiliansplatz basement: techno, house and styles in between, with local and international DJs.
Ticket-led door: buy in advance for the bigger nights, and expect a small, packed basement.

Rote Sonne opened in 2005 in the basement of Maximiliansplatz 5, founded by a team of music lovers including Martin Gretschmann and Peter Wacha. The name comes from Rudolf Thome's 1970 film, and the club set itself up as an alternative to Munich's established venues.
