Groningen nightlife by neighbourhood: where to go out

Groningen nightlife by neighbourhood: dance cafés on the Poelestraat and Peperstraat, the Grote Markt, gigs on the Oosterstraat, Simplon and De Oosterpoort.

7 min read

Groningen nightlife is packed into a small centre, so where you go depends on the night you want rather than on how far you can travel. The Poelestraat and Peperstraat, east of the Grote Markt, are lined with dance cafés that are often free to enter and open until 05:00. The Grote Markt and Vismarkt hold the big terraces, Ocean41 and PALACE, the biggest club in town. The Oosterstraat, running south to the Gedempte Zuiderdiep, has the music: Vera, FIXY and a speakeasy. Simplon is on the Boterdiep, just north of the centre, and De Oosterpoort's concert halls are to the south-east.

This guide takes each area in turn: what it is like, where to go, how to get there and home, and who it suits. There is no regulated closing time, so the question is where, not how late.

How we picked

Poelestraat & Peperstraat: the late strip

If Groningen has a nightlife street, it is two. The Poelestraat and the Peperstraat run east from the Grote Markt, and the city's tourist board says nowhere in town has as many places to go out. Most of what happens here is the dance café: a bar with a DJ, a small floor and often no entrance fee. With no regulated closing time in Groningen, the doors stay open until 05:00, and the snack bars keep going with them.

On the Poelestraat, Wolter Wolthers is the disco bar under the mirror ball, with residents playing disco, house, funk, boogie and 90s records from 23:00 to 05:00, Tuesday to Saturday. Further along the street, Het Concerthuis fills an old cinema and serves food, Dutch craft beer and cocktails from the morning, which makes it the easiest place to eat before the night starts.

The Peperstraat is where the dance cafés crowd together. Sunny Beach is a small 18+ club with no entrance fee, open from Tuesday and until 05:00 from Thursday to Saturday. Donovan's has played hip-hop, R&B, Latin and Motown since 2009, and Het Feest is the Top 40 pub with the turning draaibar, at its busiest on the Thursday student night. The Papengang, an alley between the Peperstraat and the Oosterstraat, leads to Warhol, the alternative rock night café that stays open until 06:00. On the corner of the two streets, the Hoek snack bar is the place for something to eat on the way home.

Getting there is a walk from anywhere in the centre, and getting home is usually a walk or a bike ride too. This area suits students, groups who want to move between bars and anyone who prefers free entry to a ticketed night. Not for you if you want a serious sound system: these are small rooms built for hits and sing-alongs.

Grote Markt & Vismarkt: the main squares

The Grote Markt is the centre of everything, and together with the Vismarkt, the Poelestraat and the Peperstraat it forms the part of town that is crowded every night. Much of the square was destroyed in 1945; the Martinitoren survived and still stands over it. Today its cafés and terraces are an easy first stop, and a few of them turn into dance floors.

Ocean41 is a beach-club styled dance café on the square itself, open five nights a week from 23:00 to 05:00 and, by its own account, one of the most visited dance cafés in the north. De Drie Gezusters fills several buildings and claims to be the largest café in Europe: a grand café with chandeliers, a sports bar, a dance bar called De Draaibar and five themed karaoke booths, open until 03:00 from Thursday to Saturday. At the top of the Gelkingestraat, PALACE, the biggest club in town, opens on Thursday for House of Students and on Saturday for Club Night, both from 23:00.

For a slower start, De Pintelier, the city's first Belgian café, has 30 beers on tap in one of the oldest parts of the centre, with a pils at €3.80. Mr. Mofongo, on the Oude Boteringestraat, has its own distillery and a robot arm that mixes cocktails, and stays open until 01:30 at the weekend.

Everything here is a walk from everywhere else, which also makes the square the easiest place to meet. It suits first-time visitors and groups, and anyone who wants a mainstream night with a big room at the end. Not for you if you want somewhere local and quiet: this is the busiest part of the city.

Oosterstraat & Zuiderdiep: gigs, vinyl and cocktails

The Oosterstraat runs south from the Grote Markt to the Gedempte Zuiderdiep, and it draws a different crowd from the dance cafés round the corner. This is where the music venues and the cocktail bars are.

Vera, at number 44, is the club for the international pop underground. It started in 1899 as a reformed student society, U2 played there in 1980 to about 180 people, and more than 200 volunteers run it today. Concerts take up most of the week, and on club nights such as Club VERA the room becomes a dance floor from 23:00 to 03:00 for €5. At number 13a, FIXY took over the old Club Oost building: a vinyl bar with cocktails from the late afternoon, then house, techno and electro until 05:00 on Friday and Saturday.

On the same street, The Stockroom is a 1920s-style speakeasy in a former stockroom, with classic cocktails at €13–16.50; book by phone between 13:00 and 20:00. On the Gelkingestraat, RGB runs a silent disco from Thursday to Saturday, with three DJs on three headphone channels. On the Gedempte Zuiderdiep, Proeflokaal Mout pours only Dutch beers from ten taps, from 15:00 Thursday to Sunday.

The Papengang links the Oosterstraat with the Peperstraat, so you can move between gigs and dance cafés in a couple of minutes. Since 2 July 2026 the night buses to the province also stop at Zuiderdiep. This area suits live music fans, cocktail drinkers and anyone who wants electronic music in the centre. Not for you if you only want chart hits: the music here leans alternative and electronic.

Ebbingekwartier: Simplon on the Boterdiep

Just north of the centre, the Ebbingekwartier is best known for its green space, where students play football and volleyball, families have barbecues and the skyline is in view. For a night out it means one venue: Simplon, on the Boterdiep canal.

Simplon has been a music venue since the early 1970s, in a building that was a canning factory and then a jacket factory. After a full renovation it reopened in 2002 with a main hall for 400 and an upstairs hall for up to 200, and it now runs about 200 events a year: pop, rock, hip-hop, jazz, techno and drum and bass. Dance nights in autumn 2026 include VISION on 9 October, Housequake with Roog and Erick E on 16 October, from 21:00 to 02:00 for €24.50, and Good Times, with 80s, 90s and 00s throwbacks, on 7 November.

Night events are 18+, bags can be checked and filming needs permission. It is a short bike ride from the Grote Markt, and you can cycle back into the centre afterwards for a last stop on the Peperstraat. It suits anyone who wants a proper sound system and a ticketed line-up. Not for you if you want to drop in on a whim: check the programme and buy ahead.

Oosterpoort: concerts south-east of the centre

The Oosterpoort is a district south-east of the centre, and for a night out it means one building: De Oosterpoort on the Trompsingel. Run by SPOT Groningen, which also runs the Stadsschouwburg, it has two concert halls, and the Noord Nederlands Orkest plays in the main one.

The pop programme is what matters for a night out. October 2026 brings Grandmaster Flash on the 16th, Band of Horses on the 17th and Caravan Palace on the 28th, and Snelle's show on the 24th has sold out. Every January the building hosts Noorderslag during Eurosonic Noorderslag, the showcase festival and conference for new European music, which runs from 13 to 16 January 2027.

Concerts end in the evening, so the plan is a show here, then a walk or a bike ride back to Vera, Warhol or the Peperstraat. It suits gig-goers and anyone in town for Eurosonic. Not for you if you want to dance: this is a concert hall, not a club.

Where to stay

Stay in the centre. Almost every venue in this guide is a walk from the Grote Markt, there is no night train, and the night buses only go to towns outside the city, so a bed within walking distance saves you a taxi. De Doelen, the boutique hotel in the De Drie Gezusters complex, is on the Grote Markt itself. If you come for Eurosonic Noorderslag in January, book early: the festival brings bands and music industry from across Europe. Compare hotels and hostels near the centre on NightFind stays.

In August, Paradigm holds its techno and house festival at the old sugar factory site, ten minutes by bike from the centre. And if you have a second weekend, Amsterdam is about two hours away by train.
