Zagreb nightlife by neighbourhood: where to go out

Zagreb nightlife by neighbourhood: which area suits your night, from Tkalčićeva bars and Lower Town gigs to Trnje clubs and the Jarun lakeside.

8 min read

Zagreb nightlife is spread across six areas, and each one does a different night. Tkalčićeva and the hill above it are for bars and small basements. The Lower Town has jazz, rooftops and the concert halls. Ilica runs west with courtyards, a beer hall and a cocktail bar in Trešnjevka. The big clubs sit in former factories around Savska and Trnje, Jarun has the lakeside club, and the east has a wooden loft and a brewery garden.

Choose the area by the night you want, then check how you get home: four night tram lines, 31 to 34, run about every 40 minutes. This guide covers what each area is like, where to go and who it suits.

How we picked

Tkalčićeva & Gornji Grad: the bar street and the hill

Tkalčićeva is about half a kilometre long and runs north from near Trg bana Jelačića. The Medveščak stream that once ran down it was covered in 1898, and the street was renamed in 1913 after the historian Ivan Tkalčić. It is known for cafés, restaurants and bars, and it is the easiest place to start. At number 56, Funk Club is a basement under stone vaults, reached by a spiral staircase. It is a café-bar by day, Time Out lists it as open from Tuesday to Saturday, and the music is house, jazz and broken beats. A Friday night in October 2026 ran 20:00 to 02:00, so this is the warm-up end of the night. At number 84, at the far end of the street, Booze and Blues is a rock bar with live music from Thursday to Sunday and a 02:00 close from Thursday to Saturday.

For a cheaper, louder night, go up the hill. Klub Dva Osam at Jabukovac 28 took over from the old Jabuka club and runs concerts and DJ nights with a terrace. Most nights cost €8 presale and €10 on the day, and students with an X-ica pay less, from €6. The programme swings from metal to techno. Tkalčićeva is a short walk from Trg bana Jelačića, where night trams 31, 32 and 34 stop, but Jabukovac is on the hill north of the centre, so a Bolt or Uber is easier late. The area suits a first night in Zagreb and anyone who wants to walk between bars. Not for you if you want a big dance floor: the rooms here are small.

Donji Grad: gigs, jazz and the rooftops

The Lower Town is where Zagreb does its early evening. Bacchus Jazz Bar is a cellar bar at Trg kralja Tomislava 16, on the square in front of the main train station. Its courtyard is covered in plants and shaded by fig trees, it has been running since the 1980s and it holds jazz on Fridays. It is listed as open from 08:00 to 00:00 from Monday to Saturday. Botaničar on Trg Marka Marulića is a bar, gallery and social club with houseplants and a reading nook, and weekend evenings bring acoustic gigs or DJ sets. It closes at 23:00. For a view, Rooftop Bar art'otel at Petrinjska 7 announced hours of 16:00 to midnight, and In Your Pocket says DJs play from Thursday to Saturday, weather permitting. The roof is often booked for private events, so check first.

The music venues are here too. AKC Medika at Pierottijeva 11 is a non-profit cultural centre with a courtyard painted by street artists and the Attack concert room. Obeka on 23 October 2026 is listed from 22:00 to 04:00, with tickets at €12 in advance and €15 at the door. Tvornica Kulture on Ulica Pavla Šubića has a large hall and a smaller one: Ki Klop play on 30 October, Clan of Xymox on 13 November and Suede on 17 November, with most gigs starting at 20:00. Both are in the Lower Town. The area suits early evenings and gig-goers. Not for you if you want a late bar crawl: Bacchus and the rooftop close at midnight and Botaničar at 23:00.

Ilica & Trešnjevka: courtyards, a beer hall and cocktails

Ilica runs west from Trg bana Jelačića, and the bars are scattered along it. Swanky Monkey Garden at Ilica 50 is the bar of a hostel in a former dry-cleaning factory, with a courtyard terrace that is heated in winter and has a pool in summer. It opens at 08:00 and closes at 02:00 on Friday and Saturday. Nearer the square, OUT Rooftop at Ilica 16 looks towards the Lotrščak Tower and runs DJ nights until 04:00 on summer weekends, which makes it a seasonal choice. Check its channels for hours before you go.

Further out, Pivana at Ilica 222 is a beer hall on a former brewery site, with a stage for live music, tables with their own taps and a 02:00 close from Thursday to Saturday. Off the main street, Peaches & Cream on Krapinska, a few steps from Trešnjevački trg, is a small seated cocktail bar. It was added to the World's 50 Best Discovery list in February 2025, reservations are recommended, and we could not confirm its opening hours. ZET's journey planner shows the tram routes. The area suits a bar crawl along one street and anyone who prefers courtyards to clubs. Not for you if you want dancing after 02:00.

Savska & Trnje: where the big clubs are

This is where Zagreb's club scene lives, in former factories and warehouses around the railway and the Sava. Depo at Radnička cesta 27 is a concrete techno room in the former Katran factory. Insolate All Night cost €15 and ran 23:00 to 06:00, and Resident Advisor lists RY96 on 17 October and Gina Demarchi on 24 October 2026. Boogaloo at Ulica grada Vukovara 68, about a 15-minute walk south of the main station, holds about 1,500 and books Chris Liebing on 16 October, Deep Dish on 21 November and Pan-Pot on 19 December. Peti Kupe at Trnjanska cesta 5 swings from trance and techno to disco, with Friday sessions from 23:00 to 05:00 and presale on Entrio.

For gigs, Klub Močvara at Trnjanska struga 34 is the alternative room near the Sava, with tickets from free to €20 and a bar open daily from 17:00 to 00:00. Vintage Industrial Bar at Savska cesta 160 is a former button factory with three spaces; a KSET50 gig there cost €13 in advance and €16 at the door, and KSET, the student club, is closed for renovation. The night trams, lines 31 to 34, run about every 40 minutes, but clubs finish at 05:00 or 06:00, so plan a Bolt or Uber. The area suits people who travel for a line-up. Not for you if you want to walk between bars.

Jarun: the lakeside club

Jarun is in the south-west of Zagreb. The lake is up to 2.25 kilometres long, the sports and leisure centre was built for the 1987 Universiade, and the INmusic festival is held at the lake. By day it is a sports and leisure area. At night it has Aquarius at Aleja Matije Ljubeka 19, open since 1992 with two floors and room for about 2,000, according to Time Out. The U/OFFU techno and bass night on 2 October 2026 ran 23:00 to 06:00 and was 18+.

Make sure you read the Zagreb listing: Aquarius at Zrće beach on Pag is a different club. Jarun is far from the old town, so decide before you go how you will get home after a 06:00 finish; Bolt and Uber operate in Zagreb. The area suits anyone who wants a big room and does not mind the ride. Not for you if you want to hop between venues: this is a lake park, not a nightlife street.

Maksimir & East Zagreb: a loft and a brewery garden

East of the centre, two places are worth the trip. Masters at Maksimirska cesta 132 is a loft with wooden floors next to the Maksimir tennis centre, with a bar built like a tree house. The music runs from deep house and dub to techno, and Resident Advisor lists nights on 16, 17, 23 and 31 October 2026. A March night ran 23:59 to 06:30 for €10.

The Garden Brewery at Slavonska Avenija 26/1 in Žitnjak is a taproom with twenty taps, two food counters and a garden with more than 40 mature trees. It is less than ten minutes by car from the centre and has free parking. Hours are 10:00 to 00:00 from Monday to Thursday and 14:00 to 22:00 on Sunday. Friday and Saturday close at 02:00 on one official page and at midnight on another, so check. The area suits craft-beer fans and anyone who plans around one venue. Not for you if you want to walk home from the bar.

Where to stay

For nightlife, stay near Trg bana Jelačića. Tkalčićeva is a short walk north, Ilica starts at the square, and night trams 31, 32 and 34 stop there. A room in the Lower Town near the main station puts you close to Bacchus Jazz Bar, Rooftop Bar art'otel and the walk to Boogaloo. If you are only coming for a Jarun or Maksimir night, a room nearer that area shortens the ride home. Compare hotels and hostels by area on our page of places to stay in Zagreb.
