The 8 best bars in Zagreb, ranked: Peaches & Cream, The Garden Brewery, Pivana, Booze and Blues and more, with closing times and who should skip each one.
The best bars in Zagreb are spread across the city rather than packed onto one street. Tkalčićeva has the rock bar Booze and Blues at its far end. Ilica has a courtyard garden, Swanky Monkey Garden, and the beer hall Pivana. The Lower Town has a jazz cellar, a gallery bar and a hotel rooftop, Peaches & Cream is a small seated cocktail bar in Trešnjevka, and The Garden Brewery pours twenty beers in the east of the city.
This list ranks eight of them. Each entry gives the closing time, what the door expects and one honest reason to skip it. The basics: closing times on this list run from 23:00 to 02:00, and the bars that stay open late do so from Thursday to Saturday. When you are ready to dance, see our list of the best clubs in Zagreb.
We ranked bars on five things: drinks, room, crowd, late licence and door. Drinks means a menu with a point of view, whether that is cocktails, craft beer or a jazz cellar. Room means a space with character. Crowd means people who came for the place. Late licence means a close at midnight or 02:00 rather than 23:00. Door means you can predict whether you will get a seat. Every bar here was checked against 2026 sources: official sites, the Zagreb Tourist Board, Spotted by Locals pages updated in June 2026 and the In Your Pocket rooftop guide updated in September 2026. Drink prices are not published for most of them, so we do not quote any.
A small seated cocktail bar on Krapinska, added to the World's 50 Best Discovery list in February 2025 and ranked 330th in that year's Top 500 Bars. The menu changes with the seasons and the room is conversational rather than loud. Skip it if you want a big group, a standing crowd or a late night: there are few seats, and we could not confirm opening hours.
Twenty taps of the brewery's own beer, two food counters and a garden with more than 40 mature trees, open daily. It is the pick for craft beer, and the one bar here that is more day than night. Skip it if you want the old town: it is in Žitnjak, less than ten minutes by car from the centre.
A beer hall on a former brewery site on Ilica, with a stage for live music, tables with their own taps and a 02:00 close from Thursday to Saturday. It opens early, from 07:00 on weekdays, so it works at any hour. Skip it if you want a craft list: the beer comes from one brewery, and Ilica 222 is well out along the street from Cvjetni trg.
A rock bar at the far end of Tkalčićeva with live music from Thursday to Sunday and a 02:00 close from Thursday to Saturday. A local reviewer calls it a true rock 'n' roll haunt, and there is room to dance. Skip it if you want a quiet drink or a cocktail list: the room is loud when the band starts.
A hostel bar in a former dry-cleaning factory in the yard of Ilica 50, with a terrace that is heated in winter and has a pool in summer. The Zagreb Tourist Board lists live music, artsy events and pub quizzes, and locals use it too. Skip it if you want a polished cocktail menu: this is a casual courtyard, and the layout changes with the season.
A rooftop on the hotel at Petrinjska 7, with a panoramic view over the city centre and a signature cocktail list. DJs play from Thursday to Saturday, weather permitting, according to In Your Pocket. Skip it if you want a late night or a sure seat: the announced close is midnight, and the roof is often booked for private events.
A cellar bar on the square in front of the main train station, with a courtyard covered in plants and fig trees, open since the 1980s. Jazz nights run on Fridays. Skip it if you want a late night: it closes at midnight, and Friday jazz is the one regular music night we found.
A bar, gallery and social club on Trg Marka Marulića, with houseplants, a reading nook and acoustic gigs or DJ sets at weekends. It is the calmest room on this list. Skip it if you want a bar that stays open past 23:00 or a loud night.
Pick one cluster per night. Ilica gives you the most for the least walking: Swanky Monkey Garden is at number 50 and Pivana is further out at number 222. In the Lower Town, Bacchus Jazz Bar on Trg kralja Tomislava and Rooftop Bar art'otel on Petrinjska are both near the main train station. Botaničar, on Trg Marka Marulića, closes at 23:00, so it works as a first stop. Booze and Blues is at the far end of Tkalčićeva, which runs north from near Trg bana Jelačića. Peaches & Cream on Krapinska and The Garden Brewery in Žitnjak are destinations.
For a summer rooftop, add OUT Rooftop at Ilica 16, which is not ranked here because we could not confirm its hours. Night trams 31 to 34 run about every 40 minutes with a €1.99 night ticket, and Bolt and Uber operate in the city.
Zagreb's bars work best as a route, not a single stop. Start in the Lower Town or on Tkalčićeva, move to Ilica for a late drink and keep the club for after midnight. For cocktails, Peaches & Cream, a small seated bar on Krapinska that was added to the World's 50 Best Discovery list in February 2025. For beer, The Garden Brewery, with twenty taps. For live music, Booze and Blues on Tkalčićeva.
Between 23:00 and 02:00 on this list. Botaničar closes at 23:00, Rooftop Bar art'otel and Bacchus Jazz Bar at midnight, and Booze and Blues, Pivana and Swanky Monkey Garden stay open until 02:00 on their late nights.
Tkalčićeva, a street of about half a kilometre known for cafés, restaurants and bars. For courtyards and a beer hall, walk west along Ilica.
Yes. Rooftop Bar art'otel at Petrinjska 7 has DJs from Thursday to Saturday, weather permitting, and OUT Rooftop at Ilica 16 runs DJ nights until 04:00 on summer weekends. The art'otel roof is often booked for private events, so check first.
Yes. The Garden Brewery in Žitnjak pours twenty of its own beers, and Pivana on Ilica serves beer from the neighbouring Zagreb brewery, including an unfiltered one.
