Stockholm nightlife by neighbourhood: where to go out

Stockholm nightlife by neighbourhood: which area suits your night, from Södermalm bars and Stureplan clubs to Gamla Stan jazz and the slaughterhouse halls by Globen.

8 min read

Stockholm nightlife is split across islands and districts, and each one suits a different night. Södermalm has the bars, the gig rooms and Under Bron, the club under the Skanstull bridge. Hornstull, at its western end, has some of the city's best cocktail bars. Stureplan in Östermalm has the polished clubs with 23+ and 25+ doors, and Norrmalm has Berns, Fasching and the rooftops. Gamla Stan is for jazz and a quieter drink, Kungsholmen for one late schlager bar, and Slakthusområdet by Globen for the warehouse nights.

Pick the area by the night you want, then plan the ride home: the metro runs all night on Friday and Saturday, but stops at about 01:00 on other nights. This guide covers what each area is like, where to go and who it suits.

How we picked

Södermalm (SoFo): bars, gigs and the club under the bridge

If you only have one night, spend it on the eastern half of Södermalm. The island runs from Slussen in the north down to Skanstull, with SoFo, the grid of streets south of Folkungagatan, in the middle. It has the densest mix of bars, gig rooms and clubs in the city, and it is the one area where you can do a whole night on foot.

Start at Kvarnen on Tjärhovsgatan, a beer hall that has served guests since 1908 and has been the home pub of Hammarby supporters since the 1970s. It stays open until 03:00 on Friday and Saturday. Up the hill on Mosebacke torg, Södra Teatern runs gigs in Kägelbanan and turns into a club across several rooms on Friday and Saturday, 22:00–03:00, for 195 kr including the cloakroom. Down on the quay, Kollektivet Livet fills the old Stadsgården boat terminal with concerts, club nights and a roof terrace.

The late part of the night is at the southern tip. Under Bron sits under the Skanstull bridge and opens on Friday and Saturday from 22:00 to 05:00; entry is free before 23:00 and 175 kr after midnight, and most nights are 21+. From May to September the same address becomes Trädgården, the open-air summer club.

Getting there: Slussen (red and green lines) for Södra Teatern and Kollektivet Livet, Medborgarplatsen (green) for Kvarnen and Skanstull (green) for Under Bron. On Friday and Saturday the metro runs all night, so getting home is easy. It suits first-timers, gig-goers and anyone who wants bars and a club in the same area.

Hornstull: cocktails and late bistros

The western end of Södermalm is more local and less crowded, and it is where you go for a serious drink rather than a big club. Tjoget on Hornsbruksgatan was in The World's 50 Best Bars top 50 every year from 2016 to 2021, and it runs a dining room, a wine bodega, a beer café and the cocktail bar under one roof. Cocktails cost 175–185 kr, and it stays open until 03:00 on Friday and Saturday.

A short ride east along Hornsgatan, Häktet stands where Stockholm's debtors' prison was from 1781 to 1872. Today it is a bistro and cocktail bar with jazz evenings and DJs every weekend, open until 03:00 on Friday and Saturday and closed on Sunday.

Hornstull and Zinkensdamm are both on the red line. It suits couples, cocktail drinkers and anyone who wants a long dinner that turns into a late drink. It is not the area for a big dance floor.

Stureplan / Östermalm: the polished clubs

Stureplan is the square where Östermalm's club scene meets, and it is the most dressed-up night in the city. Spy Bar on Birger Jarlsgatan, which its owners call perhaps Sweden's best-known nightclub, opens Thursday to Saturday from 23:00 to 05:00 with a 25+ door. Around the corner on Sturegatan, Sturecompagniet runs its ground-floor club, Atrium, from Thursday to Saturday with techno and house and a 23+ door, and Hell's Kitchen in the same building carries on with rock, schlager and house until 05:00 on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The rules here are clear: bring ID, book a table if you are a group, and join the guest list through the clubs' app. Östermalmstorg station on the red line has an exit at Stureplan, and the metro runs all night at the weekend. It suits groups with a table budget and anyone over 23 who wants to dress up. Not for you if you are under 23.

Norrmalm / City: big rooms, soul and rooftops

The city centre north of the water has the widest spread of nights. Berns on Berzelii Park has been a house of entertainment since 1863 and now runs four club spaces on Friday and Saturday, including LE! until 04:00 and NEU, a 300-capacity techno room with a sound system built for 1,000 people, until 05:00. Both are 23+, and NEU is guest list only.

Fasching on Kungsgatan is a jazz venue with concerts most evenings and Club Soul every Saturday: soul, funk and disco on vinyl since 1993, 23:30–04:00, 50 kr plus the cloakroom and 18+. Café Opera, in the opera house building on Karl XII:s torg, opens on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday until 03:00 with a strict dress code: no sportswear, shorts or sandals.

For the first drink, Röda Huset above Sergels torg was number 35 in The World's 50 Best Bars 2025, and Tak pours on a rooftop 52 metres above Brunkebergstorg until 01:00 at the weekend. T-Centralen, Kungsträdgården and Östermalmstorg stations are all within walking distance. It suits short stays, cocktail drinkers and anyone who wants several options within ten minutes on foot.

Gamla Stan: jazz and cocktails in the old town

The old town is beautiful at night but quiet after midnight, so treat it as the start of a night rather than the end. Pharmarium on Stortorget is an apothecary-themed cocktail bar that opens every day, until 01:00 on Friday and Saturday. A couple of minutes away, Stampen has been a jazz pub since 1968, with live jazz, blues and soul most nights, no bookings and an 18+ door; it closes at 02:00 on Friday and Saturday.

Gamla Stan station on the red and green lines is a few minutes' walk from both, and Slussen and Södermalm are one stop south. It suits jazz fans, first-time visitors and anyone who wants a drink with history around it. Not for you if you want to dance.

Kungsholmen: a local night

Kungsholmen is mostly residential, and most visitors never go out here. The reason to come is Lemon Bar on Scheelegatan, a schlager bar since autumn 1994 that plays the big singalong classics from Tuesday to Saturday, 21:00–03:00. Entry is free from Tuesday to Thursday, and the door is 25+ on Friday and Saturday.

Rådhuset station on the blue line is about 150 metres away. It suits a midweek night, groups who know the words and anyone staying on the island. Not for you if schlager is not your music.

Slakthusområdet: warehouse nights by Globen

The old meatpacking district south of Södermalm is being rebuilt into a new neighbourhood, and its slaughterhouse buildings already hold two of the city's biggest rooms. Slakthuset has run since 2010 across three floors and three dance floors for 950 people, on Friday and Saturday from 22:00 to 03:00, with techno, house, disco and hits nights, some of them free with a registered ticket.

Fållan moved in 2024 into the renovated slaughterhouse halls of 1912 and holds more than 2,000 people for gigs and club nights, such as a Toy Tonics Jam in October 2026. Globen station on the green line (route 19) is a few minutes from both. It suits electronic music fans and big groups. Check the event first: Fållan has no weekly club night, and Slakthuset closes at 03:00.

Where to stay

For a night out, stay on Södermalm or near Central Station. Södermalm puts Kvarnen, Södra Teatern and Under Bron within walking distance, with Slussen, Medborgarplatsen and Skanstull on the all-night weekend metro. Norrmalm is closest to Berns, Stureplan and the Arlanda Express at Central Station. Gamla Stan is quieter at night and one stop from both.
