Bilbao nightlife by neighbourhood: which area suits your night, from Casco Viejo pintxo bars and Abando gigs to late Indautxu bars and Fever at Bolueta.
Bilbao nightlife changes character every few streets. The Casco Viejo is for pintxos and small bars, Bilbao La Vieja across the river for gigs and an alternative crowd, and Abando for Kafe Antzokia, Sala Azkena and craft beer. Indautxu has the latest bar we found, Pozas is the street for football nights, Uribitarte has Back&Stage on the river, and Fever sits on its own in an industrial estate at Bolueta.
The distances are short, so most people do two or three areas in a night. Pick by the night you want, then check how you are getting home: the metro runs all night only from Saturday into Sunday. This guide covers what each area is like, where to go and who it suits.
The old town is where most Bilbao nights begin. The Siete Calles, the seven streets the town grew from after its charter in 1300, are packed with bars, and Plaza Nueva, the arcaded neoclassical square finished in 1851, is the busiest pintxo stop in the city. The local habit is the txikiteo: a small glass of wine or a zurito and one pintxo, then on to the next bar.
Start on the square. Gure Toki is open until 23:30 most nights and closed on Wednesday. Sorginzulo was named the best pintxo bar in the Basque Country in 2018 and won a prize for its mini burger in 2024. Antxoa Taberna, at number 1, serves around 20 kinds of anchovy, most of them from Biscay. For beer, walk to La Ley Seca on Barrenkale Barrena, where the fridges are full of Basque cans and bottles. Calle Somera and Barrenkale are the rowdier bar streets once the pintxo crowd thins out.
Metro Casco Viejo serves all three lines, so getting in and out is easy. The bars are busiest between 19:00 and 23:00 from Thursday to Saturday. The old town suits first-timers, food-first nights and groups who like to keep moving. It does not suit anyone looking for a dance floor: for that, cross the river or head into the Ensanche.
Across La Merced bridge from the old town, Bilbao La Vieja and neighbouring San Francisco are where the city's alternative crowd drinks. The streets are rougher than the Casco Viejo, with small bars, cafés and a younger, mixed crowd.
The anchor is Bilborock, the 17th-century church of La Merced that the city turned into a music venue in the 1990s. It holds more than 300 people and books local bands, metal, jazz and touring acts, with tickets from about €3 to €25. Before the gig, Bihotz Café pours craft beer after a day of specialty coffee, with more cans in the fridge than beers on tap.
It is a few minutes on foot from Metro Casco Viejo. San Francisco is one of the more run-down parts of the city, so stay on the busy streets late at night and walk back in a group. The area suits gig-goers and people who want less polished bars. It does not suit anyone after a smart cocktail bar.
Abando is the heart of the Ensanche, the 19th-century grid of wide streets on the left bank, and it has the densest mix of gigs and late bars in the city. Most of it is within a few minutes of Abando metro and the Jardines de Albia.
Kafe Antzokia is the main event: a Basque cultural centre in a former cinema on San Vicente, with concerts in the evening and a two-floor club until 06:00 on Friday and Saturday. A short walk away, Sala Azkena books rock and indie bands for about 400 people and stays open as a free bar until 05:30 at the weekend. Davinci on Arbolantxa does DJ tardeos and cocktails in an Art Nouveau room. For the first beer, Basquery brews its own on Ibáñez de Bilbao, and Morrocotuda pours seven taps on Calle Heros. Calle Ledesma, a block from Gran Vía, is the pintxo street of the Ensanche and is busiest from 19:00 to 23:00.
Abando suits live music fans and anyone who wants a full night without a taxi. It does not suit people who want the old-town feel: the streets are grand, wide and quieter after midnight.
Indautxu is the residential, slightly smarter end of the Ensanche, and it has the latest bar we found in the city. Cotton Club has been on Gregorio de la Revilla since 1994, with gigs several times a month and DJs playing eighties and nineties hits until 06:30 on Friday and Saturday. On the same avenue, Penguin pours 16 craft beers in a room quiet enough to talk. Sala Moma on Rodríguez Arias is the mainstream club of the area, with live bands, DJs and a Saturday tardeo from 18:00 to midnight.
Metro Indautxu is a few minutes from all three. The area suits groups and anyone who wants familiar hits and a late finish without leaving the centre. It does not suit people looking for electronic music.
Licenciado Poza, known to everyone as Pozas, runs from Indautxu towards San Mamés, and it is lined with bars from one end to the other. On Athletic Club match days the street fills with fans in red and white before and after the game. The rest of the week it is where younger locals meet for zuritos and pintxos.
We have not listed single Pozas bars on NightFind: the street works as a whole, and you choose by how full the counter is. Start here before a match or a night in Indautxu, with Cotton Club and Penguin a short walk away. Pozas suits football fans and anyone who wants a loud, local start. It does not suit a quiet drink on match days.
Uribitarte is a riverside street on the Abando side of the estuary, and its late venue is Back&Stage. It runs two rooms: Stage Live, open since 2013 and holding about 400 people, for gigs and DJ sessions, and BACKroom for themed parties. The music is commercial, from eighties hits to reggaeton and afro house.
It is open until 04:30 on Thursday and until 06:00 on Friday and Saturday, with a tardeo from 18:00 on Saturday. There is no strict dress code, but smart-casual is recommended, and some nights are 23+. Abando metro and the Cercanías station are about ten minutes away on foot. It suits groups, birthdays and anyone who wants chart music. It does not suit people looking for underground electronic music.
Bolueta, in the east of the city, is an industrial area with one reason to go at night: Fever & Santana 27. The venue holds up to 1,500 people across several rooms, and Fever has run there since 2005. The gig calendar covers reggaeton, Latin, rock and metal, with tickets from about €11 to €45, and the Santanazo club night plays reggaeton and commercial music from midnight to 06:00 on Saturday and from 23:00 to 05:00 on Sunday.
Take the metro to Bolueta. On Saturday the trains run all night, so getting home at 06:00 is easy; on Friday the last metro is around 02:00. Bolueta suits big-night groups and fans of the acts on the bill. It does not suit a bar crawl: there is nothing else nearby.
Stay in the Casco Viejo or Abando. Both are on the metro: the old town puts the pintxo bars on your doorstep, and Abando puts you within walking distance of Kafe Antzokia, Sala Azkena and the river. Indautxu is quieter and still central. For BBK Live in July and Aste Nagusia in August, book early, as they are the busiest weeks of the year. Compare places to stay on NightFind stays.
Bilbao is a city of short distances, so you can do two or three areas in one night: pintxos in the Casco Viejo, a gig in Abando, a late finish in Indautxu. For closing times, prices and transport, read the full Bilbao nightlife guide, and for the clubs ranked, see the best clubs in Bilbao.
The Casco Viejo for pintxos and bar streets, Abando for gigs at Kafe Antzokia and Sala Azkena, and Indautxu for late bars. Bilbao La Vieja has the alternative crowd and Bilborock.
To Kafe Antzokia or Back&Stage until 06:00, Cotton Club until 06:30, or Fever at Bolueta, which runs until 06:00 on Saturday.
The streets around the bars and Bilborock are busy, but San Francisco next door is one of the more run-down parts of the city. Stay on the busy streets and walk back in a group.
Licenciado Poza, a street of bars running towards San Mamés. It fills with Athletic Club fans on match days and with younger locals the rest of the week.
The metro runs until about 02:00 on Friday and all night from Saturday into Sunday. On Friday and Saturday nights the Gautxori night buses leave from Plaza Circular and take the Barik card only.
