The Hague nightlife by neighbourhood: where to go out

The Hague nightlife by neighbourhood: which area suits your night, from Grote Markt bars and Plein clubs to techno in Binckhorst and beach clubs at Scheveningen.

8 min read

The Hague nightlife is spread over five areas, and each one does a different night. The centre, around the Grote Markt and Plein, has the bars, the party clubs and Paard. The Zeeheldenkwartier is for good beer and a quieter table. Scheveningen has the beach clubs and, in season, day parties by the sea. Binckhorst and Laak, east and south-east of the centre, hold the techno nights that run until 06:00 and later. The Zuiderpark comes alive for festivals in summer.

Choose the area by the night you want, then check how you will get home: trams stop after midnight, and the night buses only run on Friday and Saturday. This guide covers what each area is like, where to go and who it suits.

How we picked

Centrum: Grote Markt and Plein

The Grote Markt is a former market square surrounded by bars, and it is where most nights in The Hague begin. The bars sit so close together that bar-hopping is the main activity, and the crowd leans creative and alternative. De Zwarte Ruiter at number 27 has been a music stage since 1988, with free gigs that start around 21:00 or 22:00. Next door, VaVoom is a tiki bar with a round bamboo counter and 60 cocktails. On the same square, Bleyenberg has Het Dak, which it calls The Hague's first rooftop bar, open from Thursday to Saturday between April and October. On Wednesday, De Boterwaag, a 17th-century building on the square, holds a free salsa night from 22:00. Most of these bars close at 01:00 or 01:30. Rootz on Grote Marktstraat, with more than 300 beers, stays open until 04:00 from Wednesday to Sunday and turns into a dance café on Friday nights.

The area around the square is called the Popdistrict, because its bars programme live music together with Paard, five minutes away on Prinsegracht. Paard has run since 1972, has a 1,100-capacity main hall, and holds 18+ party nights from 23:30 at the weekend for around €10. Next door, Paardcafé opens from 20:00 to 04:00 on Thursday to Saturday, usually for free. The Grey Space in the Middle on Paviljoensgracht is the art-world option, with basement club nights for a few euros. For a quieter beer, De Paas on Dunne Bierkade, a canal-side café five minutes' walk from Hollands Spoor station, has more than ten beers on tap, 150 in bottles and a terrace boat in summer.

Plein, beside the Binnenhof, is a different crowd. Office workers arrive after five for a drink, and later the square's cafés turn into places to dance. Danzig on Lange Houtstraat plays party hits from Thursday to Saturday, 23:00 to 04:00, with free entry. In the same part of the old centre, Club Joli on Kettingstraat has three rooms of disco, hits and house until 05:00 on Friday and Saturday. Trams 2, 3, 4 and 6 stop underground at Grote Markt, and Den Haag Centraal, where every night bus starts, is within walking distance. The centre suits a first night, groups and anyone who wants everything on foot. It does not suit people looking for underground electronic music.

Zeeheldenkwartier: neighbourhood bars

The Zeeheldenkwartier was built between 1870 and 1890 on the edge of the centre, and today Piet Heinstraat, Prins Hendrikstraat and Zoutmanstraat are lined with small shops, cafés and restaurants. It is a place for a long dinner and a few good beers, not for dancing. Van Kinsbergen on Prins Hendrikplein mixes a Dutch grand café with a London gastropub, with 15 taps that include its own Pale Ale and Hoppy Blond. It closes at 01:00 on Friday and Saturday.

In Willemspark, next door, Murphy's Law on Dr. Kuyperstraat is an Irish pub that pours both Murphy's Stout and Murphy's Irish Red, with more than a hundred bottled beers, live jazz four days a week and Irish music on the first Friday of the month. It closes at 01:30 from Thursday to Saturday. The neighbourhood suits people who live in The Hague, couples and anyone who wants a conversation. If you want to dance afterwards, walk back to the centre.

Scheveningen: beach clubs

Scheveningen is The Hague's beach resort, with around ten million visitors a year. Trams 1, 9, 11, 12 and 17 and bus 22 take about 15 minutes from Den Haag Centraal or Hollands Spoor, and run until about midnight. The night here depends on the season. Crazy Piano's on Strandweg runs all year: pianists on red pianos, dance floors, a heated terrace and a 04:00 close on Saturday. Zahara on Zeekant has mixed cocktails on the beach since 1983 and closes at 01:30 at the weekend. If you are staying by the sea, the N1 night bus runs from Centraal to Scheveningen via Mariahoeve on Friday and Saturday nights.

The day parties are the bigger draw. Hito, a beach house on Strand Noord that stays open in winter, hosted Gerd Janson b2b Marcel Dettmann from 15:00 to 23:00 on 4 October 2026, for €30. On the same afternoon, Whitehouse on Strandweg held a tech house event. In summer, Colorado Charlie at Zwarte Pad turns from a beach club with loungers into a club night with DJs and bands, until 23:00. Scheveningen suits a sunny weekend and an afternoon start. It does not suit a winter Saturday when you want to dance until four: for that, stay in the centre.

Binckhorst & Laak: club nights

This is where The Hague's electronic music lives. PIP sits on the BINK36 site on Binckhorstlaan, an industrial complex that also houses the Intergalactic FM radio station, a skate ramp and rehearsal rooms. Its club nights run from 23:59 to 06:00 across three spaces, with techno, electro and house, tickets at €10–18 and a PIN-only bar. The autumn 2026 calendar has Halloween nights on 30 and 31 October and PIP x Tresor on 12 December. It is within walking distance of Den Haag Centraal.

Laak is the late one. It sits at the end of an alley, through the metal gates at Lulofstraat 59, and calls itself a limited-capacity venue. Its 2026 nights have included Club Night x Rewire from 23:00 to 09:00 and a Crave Festival afterparty that ran until 10:00, with tickets around €15–17.50. Before either, Kompaan's brewery bar in Binckhorsthaven has 20 taps and a barbecue kitchen, and closes at 23:00 from Thursday to Saturday. The area suits people who travel for a line-up. It does not suit a bar crawl: there is little else nearby late at night, and both clubs only open on set dates. Getting home is simple from PIP: walk to Centraal for the night bus, which leaves once every two hours per line, so check the time of yours before the last record.

Zuiderpark: summer festivals

The Zuiderpark in Escamp is the city's big park, and in summer it becomes a festival site. The Crave Festival put five stages of disco, house and techno in the park on Saturday 6 June 2026, from 13:00 to 23:30, with a club afterparty at Laak that night. The open-air Zuiderparktheater adds concerts, including the Zuiderpark Live series. Tram 9 stops at the park on Melis Stokelaan, and trams 9 and 16 serve the Loevesteinlaan entrance. Outside festival days it is simply a park, so treat it as a summer date to plan around rather than a place to go out on a whim.

Where to stay

For nightlife, stay in the centre, between Den Haag Centraal, Plein and the Grote Markt. You can walk to the bars and the centre clubs, PIP is within walking distance of Centraal, and every night bus leaves from Centraal Station/Rijnstraat. If you are coming for the beach in summer, a bed in Scheveningen saves the tram ride, but the late clubs are in town. Compare hotels and hostels by area on our page of places to stay in The Hague.
