Seoul nightlife by neighbourhood: where to go out

Seoul nightlife by neighbourhood: which area suits your night, from Itaewon techno and Hongdae covers to Gangnam cocktail bars and Euljiro pubs.

8 min read

Seoul nightlife is spread across five main areas, and each one is a different night. Itaewon holds the underground techno and house rooms. Hongdae and Hapjeong have the student clubs, the lowest covers and a ticketed techno basement. Haebangchon and Gyeongnidan have craft beer on the hillside, Gangnam and Cheongdam have the award-winning cocktail bars, and Euljiro and Jongno mix old print-shop pubs with a hanok bar and a hotel bar.

Choose the area by the night you want, then plan the ride home: the subway stops between about 23:30 and 01:00, and the first train leaves at about 05:30. Take your passport, because clubs ask for it. This guide covers what each area is like, where to go and who it suits.

How we picked

Itaewon: the underground techno strip

Itaewon is the place to go if you want a specific sound. The district is rebuilding after the crowd crush of 29 October 2022, in which 159 people died. A "Welcome All Itaewon" brand and a nonprofit, Itaewon Governance, set up in July 2024, back the recovery, and Korea Times reported more visitors in 2025 than in 2024. The clubs below are all running in 2026. Itaewon is also home to Homo Hill, the centre of Seoul's gay nightlife.

Start on Itaewon-ro. Cakeshop at number 134 has run in a basement since 2012 and holds about 200 people. Volnost at number 142 is the sound-first option, with a Martin Audio system, sealed phone cameras and a 06:00 close on Saturday. Soap Seoul at number 217 reopened as a permanent house club on 26 February 2026, and Paper & Shelter stacks a techno room and a house rooftop in one building near Exit 1. Nyapi, on the third floor of number 187, adds house and tech house, with a rooftop that may not open every night.

The second cluster is Bogwang-ro 60-gil, the side street behind the strip. Faust, on the third floor, holds about 250 and charges ₩20,000 to 30,000. Beton Brut pairs a techno club with Concrete Bar and lists Saturday until 07:00. Southside Parlor is the cocktail stop on the same street, open 16:00–02:00, and Casa Corona is a fourth-floor patio bar with electronic music. On the Usadan-ro side, Hertz Sound starts around midnight and Teller is a tech house basement from 23:00.

Itaewon station (Line 6) is the stop for all of it. Clubs here ask for your passport, and dress codes are relaxed compared with Gangnam. The area suits techno and house fans and anyone who wants the international side of the city. Not for you if you want a late subway home: trains have gone by the time the floors fill.

Hongdae & Hapjeong: students, small clubs and cheap covers

Hongdae, around Hongik University, is the student and live-music district, and it has the lowest covers in the city. The clubs are on and around Wausan-ro. NB2 at number 79 has played hip-hop and R&B since 1999 and charges ₩10,000 with a free drink. La Bamba at 5 Wausan-ro 19-gil does Latin music and reggaeton, and it is often full by midnight at weekends. For the round between dinner and the club, Battery88 is a pocha with music and a rooftop area at number 6 on the same lane.

vurt is the serious techno room, a short walk from Hapjeong station (Lines 2 and 6) and away from the busier strip. It runs Friday and Saturday nights from a monthly programme and sells tickets on vurt.kr. Hongik University station (Line 2) Exit 9 and Sangsu station (Line 6) Exit 1 are the usual ways in for Wausan-ro. The area suits groups, first-time visitors and anyone on a budget. Not for you if you want electronic music all night: the Wausan-ro clubs play hip-hop, R&B and Latin music.

Haebangchon & Gyeongnidan: craft beer on the hillside

The hillside streets around Noksapyeong station are quieter than Itaewon's main strip and close earlier. The Booth Brewing on Noksapyeong-daero 54-gil is known for its Hopper IPA, with pints at about ₩8,000 (€5). It opens 17:00–00:00 on weekdays, until 01:00 on Friday and from 14:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Magpie Brewing at 244-1 Noksapyeong-daero pours lager, IPA and dark ales at about ₩7,000 and is open daily 15:00–00:00. Seoulbam is a pocha on Gyeongnidan's lane for soju, soft tofu stew and spicy braised pork, a short walk from Exit 1 of Noksapyeong station (Line 6).

This is the first round of the night, not the last. Nothing here stays open much past 01:00, so walk down to Itaewon afterwards. The area suits craft beer drinkers and anyone who wants to start early. Not for you if you want a dance floor.

Gangnam & Cheongdam: cocktail bars, dress codes and tables

Gangnam, south of the Han River, is the dress-code district. Door guides for 2026 say men should avoid shorts, sandals, sweatpants and open-toed shoes, and a few clubs refuse visible tattoos. Table service starts at about ₩300,000 (€190) for a basic bottle set, and VIP tables reach ₩3,000,000 (€1,900). We list no Gangnam club. We could not confirm any as operating in 2026, and club names here change often, so check a club's own page before you commit to a table. Some after-clubs open at 04:00 and run to noon. Ignore street touts who push karaoke and hostess bars: one reported case billed a single whisky bottle at ₩1,000,000 (€625).

The bars are the dependable part. On Dosan-daero 55-gil in Cheongdam, Zest ranked No. 2 in Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026 with zero-waste drinks, Alice Cheongdam is an Alice in Wonderland basement with twelve cocktails at ₩27,000 each, and Le Chamber closes at 03:00, or 04:00 on Friday and Saturday. Cheongdam station (Line 7) and Apgujeong station (Line 3) are the nearest stops. Reserve Alice, and expect to pay more for one drink than a Hongdae club charges at the door. The area suits a smart dinner and a drink, and it is the priciest night in the city. Not for you if you are on a budget or want to dress down.

Euljiro & Jongno: old print alleys and hotel bars

Euljiro is an old printing district that has filled with pubs, small clubs and bars. The alleys behind Euljiro 3-ga station (Line 2) hold Euljiro Brewing, a craft beer bar behind a bright pink entrance at Supyo-ro 48-16, and Showboo at 48-14 on the same lane, with a drag show at 22:00 on Friday and Saturday. Boo at Euljiro 3-ga 95-4 plays hip-hop and K-pop for a ₩15,000 cover. Euljiro is very crowded at weekends, and many places ask for a Korean phone number to join the queue. Ask staff how to add yourself, or go on a weekday or early in the evening.

Jongno has the quieter end. Bar Cham is a cocktail bar in a restored hanok in Seochon, ranked No. 33 in Asia's 50 Best Bars 2026, and Charles H. is the 1920s-style bar of the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul, open every night 18:00–02:00. The two make a sensible start before you head east to Euljiro. The area suits pub crawls, couples and anyone who likes to walk between rooms. Not for you if you want a single big club: the venues are small and spread through the alleys.

Konkuk University, Seongsu and Yeonnam: quieter alternatives

Three more areas come up in guides, and we list no venue in any of them yet. Konkuk University, known as Geondae, is a student area on Line 2 that is cheaper than Hongdae or Gangnam. Seongsu and Yeonnam are café and bar districts rather than club districts, so expect a long dinner and a few drinks, not a night that ends at 06:00. If you want to try them, check each bar's own page for hours first. They suit anyone who has done a Hongdae night and wants to see another side of the city.

Getting home after midnight

The subway runs from about 05:30 until between 23:30 and 01:00, and the last train varies by line, station and direction. On far branches it can leave as early as 23:15. Owl buses, the N routes, cover 14 lines from about 23:00 to 06:00 at ₩2,500 (€1.60), roughly once an hour. Taxis start at ₩4,800 and add 20 per cent from 22:00 to 23:00, 40 per cent from 23:00 to 02:00 and 20 per cent from 02:00 to 04:00. Use Kakao T and link a foreign card before midnight; Uber also works. Taxis are scarce between 00:00 and 02:00, and many people stay out until the first train at about 05:30 instead.

Where to stay

For nightlife, stay in or near Itaewon, Hongdae or Hapjeong. Itaewon puts the techno rooms and the Bogwang-ro bars within walking distance, and Line 6 links it to Hapjeong and Sangsu for Hongdae. Hongdae suits a budget night, because the covers are the lowest. Gangnam hotels suit the Cheongdam bars, but it is a taxi ride to Itaewon, and a taxi across the river at 03:00 can cost more than ₩30,000.
