Nijmegen nightlife by neighbourhood: where to go out

Nijmegen nightlife by neighbourhood: the Molenstraat student strip, Grote Markt pubs, gigs by the station, the Bloemerstraat, the Honigcomplex and the Vasim.

8 min read

Nijmegen nightlife is easy to map. The Molenstraat is the student strip, with Bar 2 open until 04:00. The Grote Markt holds the old pubs. Doornroosje and Merleyn programme gigs and club nights near the station, and the Bloemerstraat has a vinyl bar, a wine bar and a collective café. The Honigcomplex by the Waal holds Brebl and Waalhalla, and Mesh runs house and techno in the Vasim. This guide covers each area: what it is like, where to go, how to get there and home, and who it suits. Most of it is walkable in the old centre, and the Vasim is a bike ride or a taxi away.

How we picked

Molenstraat / Plein 1944: the student strip

The Molenstraat is the main student party street in Nijmegen. Into Nijmegen tells new students that every day of the week has a party, and Vox Magazine described the street's offer in 2024 as mostly mainstream and repetitive. Come for cheap, busy and easy rather than for a curated night. The street is lined with student cafés, and the Eerste Walstraat has more.

Bar 2 at number 83 opens at 20:00 and closes at 04:00 every day, according to its own website, which is the latest published closing time on the street. Club Van Buren at number 89 is a café from 12:00 that turns into a party at night, with formats such as Terug Naar Toen and Happy Feelings. Café De Fuik on the Eerste Walstraat is the lively one, popular with younger students and known for dance music and live events. We found no cover charges for any of them, and Bar 2's reviews are mixed on service and payment.

The Molenstraat is in the city centre, so most people walk or cycle home. A council closure from March 2024 shut the Molenstraat and the Walstraten to through traffic from 21:00 to 06:00, and we could not confirm its 2026 status, so ask a taxi where it can stop. NS runs an extra late train around 01:00 at weekends between Utrecht and Arnhem/Nijmegen. The strip suits first-years, groups on a budget and anyone who wants to move between bars without a ticket. Not for you if you want a line-up or a quiet drink.

Grote Markt / Koningsplein: old pubs and terraces

The Grote Markt is the old market square, and the pubs around it include the oldest café in the city. They are for sitting down with a beer rather than dancing. In de Blaauwe Hand calls itself the oldest café in Nijmegen, with a hospitality tradition from 1542, and closes at 02:00 on Friday and Saturday. Café Daen is a brown café in the old Laeckenhal, a building from 1600, with craft beer and a terrace with heated cushions. De Waagh is the 1612 weighhouse, open from 11:00 to midnight every day.

Two more names belong here. Café Samson on the Houtstraat is the beer café, with more than 100 bottled beers and 14 draft taps, and a directory lists it open to 02:00. Bar Ruygh on the Koningstraat is the younger option, a nightlife bar with music and parties that Into Nijmegen lists among the places students go out. Reviews of Ruygh are mixed.

Everything here is in the old centre and walkable. Getting home means a walk or a bike, or the weekend late train from the station. The area suits couples, small groups, anyone who wants to talk and visitors who want an old-town pub. Not for you if you want a dance floor: only Ruygh leans that way.

Hertogstraat / Station: gigs and club nights

This is where Nijmegen goes for music. Doornroosje is the pop venue on the Stationsplein, with two halls and a history that goes back to 1970. Temples play on 4 November and Hatebreed with Life of Agony on 19 November, and club nights fill the other dates: The Blend on 3 November and 1 December, the queer pop party ICONIC on 12 December and the over-40s night 40UP on 30 December. Fischer-Z and BLØF are already sold out.

Merleyn on the Hertogstraat is the smaller sibling and mostly books concerts. Indie Disco Merleyn runs on 24 October and the Poederdoos queer party celebrates its fourth anniversary on 7 November. A Merleyn Pass costs €90 for a year of concerts, though the current pass is sold out and new ones are expected in December. Both venues set prices and age rules per event.

Getting there is the easy part: Doornroosje is on the Stationsplein, at Nijmegen Centraal, and Merleyn is on the Hertogstraat in the centre. Getting home is also simple if you came by train, because the extra late train leaves around 01:00 at weekends. The area suits gig-goers, queer partygoers, visitors arriving by train and anyone who wants a ticketed, predictable night. Not for you if you want to walk in on a random Saturday: check the agenda first.

Bloemerstraat: wine, vinyl and a collective café

The Bloemerstraat is the developing side of the centre. Vox called it a developing hotspot in 2024, and it is quieter and more mixed than the Molenstraat. Paak Vinyl Bar at number 23 is the vinyl bar, with DJs and selectors, a terrace and free Record Store Sessions with live music every Thursday. It is closed on Monday and Tuesday and closes at 04:00 on Friday and 03:00 on Saturday. Bar Lebowski at number 84 is the wine bar, compact and industrial yet cosy, with snacks to share and a terrace.

Café De Plak at number 90 is the collective café, run without a boss, with vegan-friendly food by day and parties in the basement at the weekend. Its website lists a closure from 25 October to 2 November for building maintenance. We found no published closing times for the basement nights, so ask at the bar.

The street is in the city centre, so walk or cycle there and back. The area suits couples, small groups, wine drinkers and people who like records more than loud pop. Not for you if you want a big room: Lebowski is compact, and Paak is a bar with DJs rather than a club.

Waalkade / Honigcomplex: along the Waal

The Waal is Nijmegen's river, and two things sit along it. The Waalkade is the quay, with WERF Bar & Diner, a bar and diner with a terrace and a conservatory. The Waal in Vlammen fireworks of the Four Days Marches are held on the Waalkade, though the 2026 show was cancelled after an oil leak. The Honigcomplex is a former factory complex on the Waalbandijk and the Waalplein.

The complex holds three of our venues. Brebl is an independent venue for jazz, improvisation and electronic music, with free Wednesday jam sessions and dance nights at €5. Waalhalla next door is a party venue, with L.A. Sagne x FEMME FUGAZI on 10 December. Oersoep Brouwlab is the brewpub, with craft beers and smoked food ordered at the bar. Lent, the district across the Waal, has a hotel bar but no late venue we could verify.

Plan the ride home before you go: a bike or a taxi, which costs at most €4.31 to start and €3.17 per kilometre in 2026, and check the distance to the Honigcomplex in your map app. The area suits music fans, beer drinkers and anyone who wants a gig and a drink in one place. Not for you if you want a pub crawl on foot.

Vasim: the industrial club

The Vasim is an industrial area outside the centre of Nijmegen, and it holds one venue on our list. Mesh is a house and techno club that opened in the summer of 2023. A December 2025 AZOTH night ran from 23:59 to 06:00 and was listed as 18+, and photos and videos are banned. Into Nijmegen listed other places on the Vasim terrain in 2022, but we could not confirm any of them for 2026, so we do not list them.

Getting there means a bike ride or a taxi, and getting home at 06:00 means the same, since the first trains and buses run in the morning. The area suits house and techno fans, queer partygoers who follow AZOTH and people who want a long night on one floor. Not for you if you want a bar to wander between. We could not confirm a 2026 date, so check the organiser's listing before you travel.

Where to stay

For a night out, stay in the centre. The Molenstraat, the Grote Markt and the Bloemerstraat are all on foot from there, and Doornroosje is on the Stationsplein by Nijmegen Centraal, so a hotel near the station also puts the train home within reach. Into Nijmegen lists hotels such as Hotel Courage on the Waalkade, near the river bars, and a Van der Valk hotel in Lent with its own bar. Rooms are likely to be scarce in July, when the Vierdaagsefeesten and the Four Days Marches bring more than a million visits. Our stay guide lists places to book.

To compare venues across these areas, read our Nijmegen nightlife guide for closing times, prices and the way home, then pick a night from the best clubs in Nijmegen or the best bars in Nijmegen.
