The 8 best bars in Nijmegen

The 8 best bars in Nijmegen, ranked: Paak Vinyl Bar, In de Blaauwe Hand, Bar Lebowski, Café Samson and more, with closing times and honest downsides.

7 min read

The best bars in Nijmegen are old pubs and small specialist rooms rather than glossy cocktail lounges. The Grote Markt holds the pubs with the history, the Bloemerstraat has a vinyl bar and a wine bar, the Honig complex has a brewpub, and the Waalkade adds a terrace and a diner.

This list ranks eight of them. Each entry gives the closing time where one is published, the entry price where we found one and one honest reason to skip it. We did not rank a dedicated cocktail bar, so the list leans on beer, wine and vinyl. For several bars we found no published hours, and we say so. The basics first: alcohol is sold from 18 with ID, most bars are walk-in, Paak closes at 04:00 on Friday, and the pubs of the old centre close at 02:00 at the latest.

How we picked

We ranked on five things: sound, crowd, door, late licence and value. Sound means the music is part of the night, which lifts Paak. Crowd means a room people choose for itself, like the old pubs of the Grote Markt. Door means walk-in and predictable. Late licence means a closing time we could source, from Paak's 04:00 on Friday to the midnight close of De Waagh. Value compares the choice with the price, but few bars publish prices, so we quote none. Every opening time comes from the venue or a named listing, and we flag the ones from directories. We do not sell tickets or drinks ourselves.

Two clusters cover most of the list. Around the Grote Markt, In de Blaauwe Hand, Café Daen and De Waagh are within a short walk of each other, and Café Samson is on the Houtstraat in the old centre. On the Bloemerstraat, Paak is at number 23 and Bar Lebowski at number 84. Oersoep sits in the Honig complex by the Waal, and WERF is on the Waalkade. A route that works on a Friday: wine at Lebowski until 01:00, then vinyl at Paak until 04:00.

Getting home is mostly by bike or on foot. NS runs an extra late train around 01:00 at weekends between Utrecht and Arnhem/Nijmegen. A taxi costs at most €4.31 plus €3.17 per kilometre and €0.52 per minute in 2026, about €19 for three kilometres.

Nijmegen's bars reward a slow start. Begin on a terrace on the Grote Markt, move to the Bloemerstraat for wine or records, and keep the late stop for Friday. Bring ID, and check the hours of any bar whose times come from a directory. For closing times, prices and the way home in one place, read our Nijmegen nightlife guide.
