Leiden nightlife by neighbourhood: the Nieuwe Rijn terraces, Haarlemmerstraat pubs, Stille Rijn, Beestenmarkt live rooms, Nobel, and Wibar outside the centre.
Leiden nightlife is spread across a compact old town rather than packed into one street. The bars and terraces sit around the Nieuwe Rijn, the Pieterskerk and the Hooglandse Kerk. The student pubs are on the Haarlemmerstraat. Live music is split between Nobel on the Marktsteeg and the rock cafés near the Beestenmarkt, and the one warehouse club, Wibar, is outside the centre. This guide covers six areas: what each is like, where to go, how to get there and home, and who it suits. About 35,000 students study in Leiden, which is why Tuesday and Thursday matter as much as the weekend. Most of it is on foot from Leiden Centraal.
The Breestraat and the Nieuwe Rijn are the part of Leiden that most visitors see first, and in summer they are where the evening starts. The terraces face the water, and the mood is that of a university town: easy, mixed and not loud.
Einstein is a café-restaurant on the Nieuwe Rijn with a wide terrace opposite the City Hall and a terrace boat, open every day from 10:00. Annie's on the Hoogstraat has a large floating terrace where the Oude and Nieuwe Rijn meet, and it stays open until 01:30 on Friday and Saturday. Het Stadsbrouwhuis on the Aalmarkt pours 30 craft beers on tap. For dancing, Club Hifi is the student disco, open on Tuesday and Thursday for guests aged 18 and over with ID and a college card. A regular party normally costs €2.95. Its own site gives the address as Vrouwensteeg 14, while Visit Leiden lists Breestraat 50.
All of it is in the old centre, on foot from Leiden Centraal, and the night trains leave from the same station. Terrace tables at Einstein and Annie's cannot be reserved, so come early on a dry evening. The area suits groups who want to eat, drink and talk. Not for you if you want a club after 02:00: the bars here close at midnight or 01:30, and Club Hifi is a student night.
The Haarlemmerstraat is where Leiden stays out late. De Kroeg at Kort Rapenburg 4, on the left side of the street if you walk from its start towards the Breestraat, is a student pub open every day except Sunday from 16:00, with a terrace for the afternoon sun in summer. From Thursday to Saturday the doors stay open until 02:00 and the party continues until 04:00. Visit Leiden suggests it as the starting point of a pub crawl.
De Vergulde Kruik is on the same street, in a building from 1881 that is a Rijksmonument and a former liquor store, with what its site calls the only copper beer tap in the Netherlands. Its hours come from a third-party listing, so call before you go. We group Nobel with this street. It is on the Marktsteeg, about five minutes on foot from Leiden Centraal, and it is the pop venue of the region: two halls, concerts through the week and Nobel By Night club nights on Fridays and Saturdays, 19 of them from 16 October 2026 to 19 February 2027. Tickets and the bar are cashless, club-night doors close at 02:00 from Thursday to Saturday, and coats go in a €2 locker.
The street suits students, groups and anyone who wants one big night with a plan: an early drink at the Kruik, a gig or club night at Nobel, then De Kroeg until 04:00. Not for you if you want a quiet drink after midnight: the Kruik closes by 01:00, and the late nights at De Kroeg are for students.
The Stille Rijn and the Langebrug are two canal-side streets in the centre. The Grenare at Stille Rijn 1D is a bistro-bar with a terrace by the water, more than 15 small dishes and cocktails. It opens at 12:00 on most days, closes at 01:00 from Monday to Thursday and at 02:00 on Friday and Saturday, and shuts at 22:00 on Sunday.
On the Langebrug, NEXT Leiden is a three-floor nightclub with a dance floor, karaoke upstairs and a relaxed bar area, open Thursday to Saturday from 23:00. It is a mainstream late-night option. Its website lists no events, price or age limit, so check its social channels before you go. A King's Night party in April 2025 charged €10 and played reggaeton, top charts, house and dance classics.
The two work as a pair: dinner and cocktails at the Grenare, then NEXT after 23:00. Both are in the centre, on foot from Leiden Centraal. The area suits couples and groups who want a meal first. Not for you if you want a clear programme or a published door policy: NEXT gives neither.
This is the older part of the centre, around the Pieterskerk and the Hooglandse Kerk, and it holds the densest cluster of cafés in this guide. De Bonte Koe is a brown café in a building from around 1890, with a largely unchanged interior and tile panels from the Holland tile factory in Utrecht. It stays open until 03:00 from Thursday to Saturday. De Uyl van Hoogland on the Nieuwstraat has an owl theme, a terrace facing the Hooglandse Kerk and, according to listings, live music on Sundays. De Twee Spieghels, also on the Nieuwstraat, has been a jazz and wine café since 1972 and admits guests aged 18 or over.
For cocktails, Café Frank on the Kloksteeg has a terrace on the square by the Pieterskerk and runs cocktail workshops, and Bar Olaf at Hooigracht 49 is a cocktail bar with alcohol-free options.
In early October the town fills for Leidens Ontzet, the 3 October celebration of the end of the Spanish siege of 1574, with a funfair, hutspot and parades. The 2026 edition ran on 2 and 3 October. The student societies of Leiden University, among them Minerva, described as the oldest student meeting place in the Netherlands, run their own member spaces. We have not listed them because we cannot confirm which are open to non-members.
The area is in the centre, on foot from Leiden Centraal. It suits anyone who prefers a proper café to a club. Not for you if you want to dance: the dance floors are elsewhere.
The Beestenmarkt and the Middelstegracht are where Leiden goes for live music that is not at Nobel. Rockcafé Lazaru's on the Nieuwe Beestenmarkt is open every day from 15:00 and books live bands. Songkick lists a double bill with Mancuerda and Funeral Whore on 10 December 2026. Its sister bar, De Hut van Ome Henne at St. Aagtenstraat 28, is the student party café, open on Friday and Saturday from 20:00 to 02:00 with a Saturday disco night that the venue says is always full. Its website was last updated in 2021, so check that the night is on.
On the Middelstegracht, Qbus Club is the club area of a large studio and rehearsal complex, with concerts listed in 2026 such as Danielle Nicole on 3 November. Qbus publishes no hours, so check the event page for the door time.
This part of the centre suits people who came for a band or a student party. It is on foot from Leiden Centraal. Not for you if you want a mainstream club: the nights here are bands and student parties.
Three places sit outside the main loop of the old centre. Stadscafé Van der Werff on the Steenstraat is by the Valk windmill, near Leiden Centraal, with a large terrace and a kitchen open from 11:00 to 22:00 every day. It closes at midnight, or at 01:00 on Friday and Saturday, so it is a first stop. COC de Kroon on the Langegracht, about ten minutes on foot from the station, is Leiden's queer café in a former gin factory, with a bar that is open on Saturdays with live DJs. It is wheelchair accessible and has gender-neutral toilets, but it publishes no hours.
Wibar is the one you travel to. It is a warehouse club on the Willem Barentszstraat, outside the centre, and its programme runs from techno and house to hardcore and drum and bass. A June 2026 night ran from 23:00 to 05:00 for €12.50, and the All Night Long night on 27 November has free entrance. Check the route on 9292 before you go and plan the way back, because it is outside the centre.
Getting home from any of these is by train, bus or taxi. NS Nachtnet runs an hourly night service through Leiden Centraal between Rotterdam Centraal and Utrecht Centraal, via Delft, The Hague HS, Schiphol and Amsterdam Centraal, so check the NS app for your night, because some numbers do not run on Tuesday and Wednesday. At weekends, night bus N40 runs from Leiden Centraal to Zoetermeer. A taxi costs at most €4.31 plus €3.17 per kilometre and €0.52 per minute in 2026.
This area suits people who came for the music or the queer café rather than the canals. Not for you if you want to stay in one area for the night: Wibar is a separate trip.
Stay in the old centre if you plan to walk between the Nieuwe Rijn, the Haarlemmerstraat and the Hooglandse Kerk, or near Leiden Centraal if you arrive late: Nobel is about five minutes on foot from the station, and the night trains leave from there. Compare places to sleep on NightFind stays. If you would rather base yourself in a bigger city, Amsterdam and The Hague are both on the same night-train line as Leiden.
Leiden is small enough to do in one or two nights. Start with a terrace, move to a brown café, then choose between a club night at Nobel, the student pubs or Wibar. For closing times, prices and transport in one place, see our Leiden nightlife guide. For the ranking, read the 10 best clubs in Leiden and the 9 best bars in Leiden, and for the wider picture see nightlife in the Netherlands.
There is no single street. The Nieuwe Rijn and the Hooglandse Kerk have the bars and terraces, the Haarlemmerstraat has De Kroeg until 04:00 from Thursday to Saturday, and Nobel on the Marktsteeg has the club nights.
Club Hifi on Tuesday and Thursday, De Kroeg from Thursday to Saturday, and De Hut van Ome Henne on Friday and Saturday. The university's student societies run their own member spaces.
De Kroeg runs until 04:00 from Thursday to Saturday and De Bonte Koe until 03:00. A Wibar night in June 2026 ran from 23:00 to 05:00, and Nobel's club-night doors close at 02:00 from Thursday to Saturday.
