Brown café with a century-old tiled interior near the Hooglandse Kerk, open until 03:00 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

De Bonte Koe is a brown café in a building from around 1890, next to the Hooglandse Kerk. Visit Leiden says its interior has stayed largely unchanged for more than a century, with tile panels from the Holland tile factory in Utrecht. A 2020 DutchReview guide described nine taps and independence from Heineken.

The café serves newspapers, drinks and snacks. It opens at 16:00 on weekdays, 14:00 on Saturday and 15:00 on Sunday, and it closes at 03:00 from Thursday to Saturday. Not for you if you want a dance floor: the draw is the room and the drink.
