Gothenburg nightlife by neighbourhood: which area suits your night, from Avenyn clubs and Vasastan late bars to old-town jazz, Järntorget gigs and the Långgatorna.
Gothenburg nightlife is spread across five areas, and each one does a different night. Avenyn is the club strip, with Park Lane, Lounge(s), Push and Valand. Vasastan, the grid behind it, adds late clubs and cocktails. The old town inside the canal holds jazz at Nefertiti, cocktails at Sway and salsa at Tranquilo. West of the centre, Järntorget has Pustervik, and the Långgatorna streets have bars that run until 02:00.
Choose the area by the night you want, then plan the way home. Gothenburg has no metro, but trams run at night on lines 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and 11. This guide covers what each area is like, where to go and who it suits.
Kungsportsavenyn runs for about a kilometre from Kungsportsplatsen up to Götaplatsen and has the city's highest concentration of pubs and clubs. Start high. Cielo at Hotel Bellora is a rooftop bar on the seventh floor at number 6, reached by lift, with Italian-style cocktails and pizza. Then walk to Lounge(s) at number 5: three floors, four bars, and house, EDM and R&B, with the age limit rising from 20+ on Thursday to 25+ on Saturday. Push at number 11 plays house under a cupola and opens on Friday and Saturday only.
Further up the avenue, Park Lane at number 38 stays open until 05:00 on Friday and Saturday for 180 kr, and Valand on Vasagatan fills seven floors with room for more than 2,500 people. By the park, Trädgår'n on Nya Allén runs club nights on selected dates, mostly 18+. Kungsportsplatsen and Valand are the tram stops. Entry prices are rarely posted, so expect to ask at the door; Park Lane is the exception, with its price and age rules published for each night. The area suits a first night in Gothenburg and anyone who wants several clubs within a few minutes' walk. Not for you if you are under 20 and want a weekend night: most doors here are 20+ or older.
Vasastan is the grid of streets behind Avenyn, and it is where the clubs get looser about music. Yaki-Da on Storgatan is a restaurant, bar and club with two dance floors and a piano bar upstairs. It opens on Wednesday and Thursday from 19:00 to 03:00 and runs to 04:00 on Friday and Saturday, which makes it a midweek option. Excet on Vasagatan has three dance floors, eight bars and a covered terrace, with a Friday mingle from 19:00 and a schlager bar for singalongs.
For a drink first, Botánico on Aschebergsgatan runs a jungle-themed cocktail bar, Djungelbaren, from 16:00 with an evening DJ, open until 01:00 on Friday and Saturday and closed on Sunday and Monday. Vasaplatsen and Valand are the nearest tram stops, and Yaki-Da and Excet are a few minutes' walk apart. The area suits groups who want a mixed-music night and a midweek option. Not for you if you want a single clear sound: neither club has one, and neither publishes its age limit or entry price.
Inom Vallgraven is the old town inside the canal, and it is the best part of Gothenburg for a night without a big club. Nefertiti on Hvitfeldtsplatsen has been a jazz club since 1978, with concerts, free DJ nights and a listening bar called Jazz Kissa; the autumn 2026 programme includes Shabaka, CORTO.ALTO and Jembaa Groove. On the same square, Sway serves original cocktails until 01:00 and is closed on Monday.
Nearby, Puta Madre on Magasinsgatan claims the largest tequila selection in the Nordic region and closes at midnight at the weekend. Steampunk Bar on Kungsgatan serves dry-ice cocktails and stays open late on Friday and Saturday. For dancing, Tranquilo on Kungstorget turns its restaurant into a salsa and merengue floor until 03:00 on Friday and Saturday. For a later dance floor, Gretas on Drottninggatan has schlager and disco downstairs and house upstairs, with hours of 21:00 to 04:00 on Friday and Saturday and a 20+ age limit according to its listing. Grönsakstorget and Domkyrkan are the tram stops. The area suits people who want a drink and a concert rather than a club. Not for you if you want to dance to DJs until 05:00.
Järntorget is the square where the west side of the city starts, a short tram ride from Avenyn. Pustervik on Järntorgsgatan has been Gothenburg's busiest live stage since 1998, with concerts most weeks at 240 to 595 kr; the autumn 2026 programme includes Teddybears on 3 November and Eagles of Death Metal on 7 November. On Friday and Saturday the building runs a nightclub until 03:00, free before midnight and 70 kr after. The bar opens at 17:00 from Wednesday to Saturday, so you can arrive early for dinner and stay.
The crowd leans towards indie, rock and R&B, and the door costs nothing before midnight. Järntorget is also the tram stop for the streets behind it. The area suits live music fans and anyone on a budget. Not for you if you want a polished Avenyn night with tables: Pustervik does not offer that.
The Långgatorna are the parallel streets on the west side, starting at Järntorget, and they are where the city drinks without dressing up. Bongo Kök & Bar on Andra Långgatan is an Italian restaurant with a cocktail list, a happy hour and guest DJs, open until 02:00 on Friday and Saturday, the latest published closing time of any bar in this guide. Brewers Beer Bar on Tredje Långgatan is one street away and pours 14 taps, mostly local beer, with sourdough pizza.
It is a short walk from Järntorget, so it pairs with a gig at Pustervik. The area suits a relaxed night and groups who want to talk. Not for you if you want a club: the nearest dance floors are back at Järntorget or on Avenyn, and our list of the best bars in Gothenburg shows how these two compare with the rest.
If it is your first night in Gothenburg, start on Avenyn: the clubs are close together, you can compare doors on foot, and Cielo gives you a view before you start. For live music, go to Järntorget for Pustervik or to Hvitfeldtsplatsen for Nefertiti. On a budget, Pustervik before midnight and Nefertiti's free DJ nights cost almost nothing at the door. For a midweek night, Yaki-Da opens on Wednesday and Lounge(s) on Thursday. For cocktails, Sway and Botánico are the two to pick, and for beer, Brewers Beer Bar. Park Lane runs the only Sunday club night in this guide.
Gothenburg is compact. Avenyn, Vasastan and the old town sit next to each other, so you can walk between most of the venues in this guide. Järntorget and the Långgatorna are on the west side, a short tram ride or walk away. There is no metro, but the city has the largest tram network in the Nordic countries, and lines 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10 and 11 also run at night. A single ticket for zone A costs 38 kr (about €3.40) and lasts 90 minutes, and you can tap a bank card on board. Check night departures in the Västtrafik To Go app before you leave a club at 04:00.
For nightlife, stay on or near Avenyn, or inside the canal. From Avenyn you can walk to Lounge(s), Push, Park Lane, Valand and Cielo, and the old town puts Nefertiti, Sway and Tranquilo within a few minutes. Pustervik and the Långgatorna are a tram ride or a walk away. Compare hotels and hostels by area on our page of places to stay.
