The 8 best bars in Rio de Janeiro, ranked: Jobi, Bip Bip, Liz and more, with drink prices in reais, opening hours and one honest reason to skip each bar.
The best bars in Rio de Janeiro are botecos and music bars more than cocktail lounges. A boteco is the neighbourhood bar: cold draught beer, small plates and a table on the pavement. Leblon's Rua Dias Ferreira has Liz and Boteco Belmonte, and Jobi pours draught beer until 03:00 or 04:00. Nosso in Ipanema is the cocktail bar with a published price list. On the hill in Santa Teresa, Armazém São Thiago has served since 1919, and Bip Bip in Copacabana has free live music and no waiters.
This ranking covers eight bars, with the price of a drink where it is published, the hours and a reason to skip each one. Draught beer costs about R$13–20 (€2.30–3.60) in a bar, and a cocktail about R$37–58 (€6.60–10.40). Most bars close between midnight and 04:00, and the metro stops at midnight, so order Uber or 99 for the way home.
We ranked bars on the same five things as clubs: sound, crowd, door, late licence and value. For a bar, sound means live music or a level where you can still talk. Door means a walk-in table with no cover. Late licence means open past 01:00, and value compares the price of a drink with the setting. Several hours and prices come from 2024 or December 2025 listings, and each entry says so. Bracarense, Mergulho Bar and Firma are in our directory but not ranked: Bracarense closes by midnight, and the other two publish no hours or prices.
Jobi is a corner boteco on Avenida Ataulfo de Paiva, listed open every day from 11:00, to 03:00 from Sunday to Thursday and to 04:00 on Friday and Saturday. Time Out's June 2024 review gave 200 ml of Brahma draught at R$8.50 (€1.50) and caipirinhas at R$37–58 (€6.60–10.40). Prices will have moved since. Skip it if you want cocktails: the menu is draught beer, caipirinhas and bar food.
Bip Bip is a small Copacabana bar founded in 1968 and declared cultural heritage of Rio in 2010. There are no waiters: you take your drink from the fridge, tell the owner and pay at the end, and the live choro and samba are free. Riotur lists Tuesday to Thursday 20:00 to 01:00 and Sunday 19:00 to 01:00, with the Sunday roda at 21:00. Skip it if you want table service or a Friday or Saturday night, as hours for those days are not listed.
Liz is a cocktail and wine bar on Rua Dias Ferreira, led by mixologist Tai Barbin, with a French 75 at R$39 (€7) in Time Out's 2024 review. A December 2025 guide gives Tuesday to Saturday 18:00 to 01:00 and Sunday 17:00 to 01:00. Skip it if you want a beer-and-snacks boteco: Boteco Belmonte, on the same street, is the better fit.
Boteco Belmonte is a boteco at Rua Dias Ferreira 521 that a December 2025 neighbourhood guide lists open every day from 11:00 to 02:00. That is an hour later than Liz, which closes at 01:00. No prices were published in that guide. Skip it if you want a cocktail list: Liz, further along the street, is the better choice.
Armazém São Thiago, known as Bar do Gomes, has served on Rua Áurea since 1919 and keeps the furniture and utensils of a neighbourhood warehouse. A Time Out review gives beer at R$13–19.50 (€2.30–3.50) and hours of Monday to Thursday 16:00 to 00:00, Friday and Saturday 12:00 to 00:00 and Sunday 12:00 to 23:00. Skip it if you want a seat on Sunday: young crowds gather on the pavements with beers in hand.
Nosso occupies three floors on Rua Maria Quitéria, with a restaurant led by chef Bruno Katz and a cocktail bar run by Daniel Estevan. An August 2026 drinks trail listed cocktails at R$52–58 (€9.30–10.40), built on Brazilian distillates and ferments. Skip it if you want a cheap round or confirmed hours: cocktails start above R$50 (€9), and opening hours were not published.
Academia da Cachaça is a bar-restaurant on Rua Conde de Bernadotte built around cachaça and Brazilian bar food, and it won the feijoada category at the 2025 Veja Rio Comer & Beber awards, as Riotur reported in October 2025. A December 2025 guide lists Monday to Thursday 12:00 to 00:00, Friday and Saturday 12:00 to 01:00 and Sunday 12:00 to 22:00. Skip it if you want a late night: it closes at midnight on weeknights.
Bar do Mineiro is a tiled botequim on Rua Paschoal Carlos Magno, known for its pastel de feijoada and a list of more than 20 cachaças. Riotur lists Tuesday to Sunday 11:00 to 00:00, and it was among Santa Teresa's bars in Rio's Comida di Buteco competition in April 2026. Skip it if you want cocktails or a late night: it closes at midnight.
Leblon is the easiest place to compare. Liz is at Rua Dias Ferreira 679 A and Boteco Belmonte at number 521, Jobi is on Avenida Ataulfo de Paiva, and Academia da Cachaça is on Rua Conde de Bernadotte. Start early: Academia da Cachaça closes at midnight on weeknights, and Bracarense closes between 21:00 and midnight. Nosso is a separate trip to Rua Maria Quitéria in Ipanema.
In Santa Teresa, Armazém São Thiago and Bar do Mineiro are both open until midnight and fill their pavements at the weekend, so take a car up and down the hill. Bip Bip is on Rua Almirante Gonçalves in Copacabana. Mergulho Bar and Firma are in Centro, on and around the Beco do Bragança.
Pick the bar for the hour. Go to Academia da Cachaça and Armazém São Thiago early, to Liz and Nosso for a conversation, and to Jobi or Boteco Belmonte when you want the night to carry on. Draught beer is about R$13–20 (€2.30–3.60) in a bar, and Jobi listed 200 ml at R$8.50 in 2024. Cocktails were R$52–58 at Nosso in August 2026, and a French 75 was R$39 at Liz in 2024.
Jobi closes at 03:00 or 04:00, Boteco Belmonte at 02:00, and Liz and Bip Bip at 01:00. Armazém São Thiago, Bar do Mineiro and Academia da Cachaça close at midnight on most nights.
Armazém São Thiago on Rua Áurea, open since 1919, and Bar do Mineiro on Rua Paschoal Carlos Magno. Both fill their pavements at the weekend, above all on Sundays.
Plan every late journey as a car ride. The metro stops at midnight and phone theft is the main risk, so use Uber or 99, match the plate and keep your phone inside until you are in the car.
