When the Cologne carnival session opens on 11 November 2026, what happens on the Heumarkt, what tickets cost, what is banned and where the alternatives are.
The Cologne carnival session opens on Wednesday 11 November 2026, and the main party is on the Heumarkt and Alter Markt in the Altstadt. This post sets out the times, ticket prices, rules and alternative openings that koeln.de and other local pages have published so far.
For clubs and bars around the day, see the Cologne nightlife guide and the best clubs in Cologne.
Facts checked on 22 October 2026. Line-ups, prices, sold-out status and transport plans change, so confirm on the organiser page before you go.
koeln.de says the stage will feature carnival music stars and the designated Dreigestirn, with the programme ending at 20:00 with Cologne songs. The pages checked for this post do not name any bands: the stage programme is listed as “still to be announced”. A third-party listing on festivalsindeutschland names Bläck Fööss, Höhner, Brings, Kasalla, Cat Ballou, Klüngelköpp, Räuber and Paveier, but most of the same names appear in koeln.de’s reports for 2023 and 2024, so treat them as unconfirmed for 2026.
The Dreigestirn of the 2026/27 session is Prinz Marius I., Bauer Alex and Jungfrau Johanna, presented by the Kölner Narren-Zunft von 1880. The session motto is “Morje es, wat do drus mähs”, and the proclamation takes place on Friday 8 January 2027 in the Gürzenich. See Cologne Karneval 2027 dates for the street carnival.
The two pages describe the same prices differently. koeln.de lists tickets from €39 and time-slot tickets for €11.11 through the Willi-Ostermann-Gesellschaft shop, without saying whether the square itself needs one. festivalsindeutschland says entry is free and that tickets cover reserved seating and time slots for certain stage areas. Check the shop before you travel. Kölsch is sold at drink stands on the Heumarkt, and koeln.de says the price is the same as last year without giving the figure.
Glass is banned. Bollerwagen, Pittermännchen (beer crates), chairs, tables and large bags are not allowed on the site. festivalsindeutschland adds that awareness teams in purple vests are available for help.
Across the Rhine, the Tanzbrunnen on the Schäl Sick side hosts the “Kölsche Countdown”, described as a family-friendly opening with Cologne bands, and the Bürgerhaus Stollwerck holds an alternative Sessionseröffnung billed as a best-of of alternative Cologne carnival. Neither page gives a time. koeln.de also advertises a party boat, “Karneval om Rhing” on the MS Rheinfantasie, with no date, and says its party guide covers pubs and clubs without naming venues. It lists an “Elfter im Elften” event dated 14.11.2026, not 11.11.
koeln.de refers to a security concept for Zülpicher Straße but the 2026 details were not in the text. For orientation, the 2025 traffic page shows Zülpicher Straße fully closed between Universitätsstraße and Hohenstaufenring from the morning, Kwartier Latäng closures starting around 07:00 and lifted between 02:00 and 04:00, and Altstadt closures (Deutzer Brücke inbound, Augustinerstraße, Markmannsgasse) from 06:00 until about 22:00. In 2023 the city used about 6 km of fencing, entrances that closed when the street was full, and a glass ban enforced by private security. Expect a similar set-up, but wait for the city’s 2026 announcement.
The Festkomitee’s calendar lists “Ähzezupp, Klaaf und Fastelovend” by the Kölsche Narren Gilde on Friday 6 November 2026 at 18:00, and a Sessionseröffnung by KG Kölsche Stäänefleejer on Saturday 7 November at 15:00. “Morje es, wat do drus mähs”, which puts the theme of the future at the centre, according to koeln.de’s report on the Dreigestirn.
koeln.de describes the “Kölsche Countdown” at the Tanzbrunnen, on the Schäl Sick side of the Rhine, as a family-friendly opening with popular Cologne bands. The page gives no times.
Yes. WDR broadcasts the countdown live from 10:30 to about 16:00, according to koeln.de.
koeln.de expects about 30,000 people. The Zülpicher Straße crowd is a separate event: in 2023 the Uni-Wiese was named as the overflow area for up to 50,000 people.
