The 7 best clubs in Chicago, ranked: Smartbar, Spybar, Radius, Prysm and more, with closing times, ticket prices, ID rules and the way home.
The best clubs in Chicago are spread across several neighbourhoods rather than one strip, so the list below mixes a 400-capacity basement, a 3,800-capacity former steel factory and an LGBTQ+ dance bar on North Halsted. House music has a local claim here: The Warehouse opened at 206 South Jefferson Street in 1977, and the style is reported to be named after a shortened form of its name. Smartbar, which opened in 1982, carries that history today.
Each entry gives the closing time, the price where one is published, what the door expects and one reason to skip it. The basics first: alcohol is sold to people aged 21 and over, a late-hour licence lets clubs run to 04:00 or 05:00, and the Red and Blue Lines run all night. For the wider picture, read the Chicago nightlife guide.
Facts checked on 22 October 2026. Line-ups, prices, sold-out status and transport plans change, so confirm on the organiser page before you go.
We ranked on five things: sound, crowd, door, late licence and value. Sound means a room built for dancing, such as the d&b KSL system at Radius. Crowd means people who came for the music. Door means you can predict whether you get in, including age and dress rules. Late licence means how long the night runs, from Radius events that usually end between 02:00 and 03:30 to Saturday closes at 05:00. Value compares the published price with the night. Every club has events dated 2026, and every fact comes from the venue, Resident Advisor or a dated third-party listing.
Smartbar is under the Metro building at 3730 N Clark Street in Lakeview and opened in 1982. Festival Insider (2022) called it the only remaining club from the early house era, and Techno Airlines puts the capacity at about 400. It runs Friday and Sunday to 04:00 and Saturday to 05:00, with October 2026 tickets at $15 to $25. DJ Seinfeld plays on Saturday 24 October and Derrick Carter hosts the Sunday Queen! night. Door tickets are cash only, and the room is down a flight of stairs, so it is not wheelchair accessible.
It ranks first for its programme, size and the Friday to Sunday run. Skip it if you need step-free access or want to pay by card at the door.
Spybar is a basement club at 646 N Franklin Street. The club says it opened in 1996, and the room is about 4,500 square feet with minimal decor. Hours are Friday 22:00 to 04:00 and Saturday 22:00 to 05:00, and Dice tickets for October 2026 ran from $15 to $30. Coat check is compulsory at $5, and flip-flops, open-toed footwear and work boots are not allowed.
It ranks second for its small room and its late licence on both weekend nights. Skip it if you want a Sunday to Wednesday night out: the regular programme is Friday and Saturday.
Radius Chicago is a former steel factory at 640 W Cermak Road, with a venue capacity of 3,800 and a d&b audiotechnik KSL system in the main room. Carl Cox plays on Saturday 7 November 2026 and Ben Klock on Friday 27 November, with tickets sold through AXS. Age limits are set per event, and Techno Airlines says most dance nights are 18+. Cloakroom is $6, and bags larger than 16 x 16 x 8 inches are refused.
It ranks third for sound and bookings, a place lower than the 04:00 clubs because events usually end between 02:00 and 03:30. The Red Line stops at Cermak-Chinatown, about 0.6 miles away.
Prysm is at 1543 N Kingsbury Street and holds 850 according to Festival Insider and Techno Airlines. The club lists Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, with doors at 22:00. Dixon plays with Ms. Mada on Friday 30 October 2026 and Enrico Sangiuliano on Saturday 21 November. It is strictly 21+, bags above 16 x 16 x 8 inches are refused, and seating is reserved for bottle service. Normal hours run to 04:00, or 05:00 on Saturday.
Sound-Bar at 226 W Ontario Street has two levels, about 20,000 square feet and a 4,000 square foot dance floor. It plays EDM, house and trance, with Top 40 and hip-hop on the lower level. For Ferry Corsten on Friday 20 November 2026 the lower-level guest list was free from 22:00 to 22:30, $10 until 23:30 and $20 after midnight. It is strictly 21+ and asks guests to dress to impress.
Subterranean is at 2011 W North Avenue in an 1889 building. Club nights listed for October and November 2026 cost $15 to $25, including House Party on Friday 13 November (21+, $15). Each show is All Ages, 17+ or 21+, and photos or screenshots of an ID are refused. The main ballroom is up a long staircase, and Downstairs at Subterranean is step-free.
Hydrate at 3458 N Halsted Street is open until 04:00, or 05:00 on Saturday. Club Flamingo runs on Thursdays, the Draglicious Drag Revue on Saturdays from 21:00 to 23:00, and Sunday After Dark from 22:00. It is 21+ with a valid physical ID, cover is typical on Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, and it takes cards, cash and Apple Pay.
The City of Chicago says a standard consumption or tavern licence closes at 02:00 Monday to Saturday and 03:00 on Sunday. A late-hour licence allows 04:00 Monday to Saturday and 05:00 on Sunday. Smartbar, Spybar, Prysm and Sound-Bar list 04:00 on Friday and 05:00 on Saturday, and Radius events usually end between 02:00 and 03:30.
A valid physical federal or state photo ID, such as a driver's licence, state ID or passport. Smartbar requires one physical ID and may ask for a second, Prysm says the same, and Subterranean accepts official digital IDs but not photos or screenshots.
The CTA says the Red and Blue Lines run 24 hours a day and some Night Owl bus routes run around the clock, while most other trains and buses stop in the late evening. A ride costs $2.50 with Ventra and includes up to two transfers within two hours. Smartbar is by the Red Line at Addison, Prysm is about 0.3 miles from North/Clybourn on the Red Line, and Subterranean is served by the Blue Line at Damen. Plan ride-hailing as a fallback for River North and the Cermak Road area.
