If you only do one thing in Noord, make it Shelter. It sits underneath the A'DAM Tower, right behind the Buiksloterweg ferry, and it earns its place in the DJ Mag list every year. Two rooms, a proper Funktion One sound system and a strict no phones policy, which means everyone is actually dancing instead of filming. I love it for exactly that reason. Friday and Saturday nights run from around eleven until well past sunrise, and the bookings pull in names that would headline a festival.
Further along the water sits the NDSM wharf, a former shipbuilding yard that is now covered in street art and warehouse venues. This is where Noord shows its creative side. IJland and Noorderlicht give you food, drinks and music with the cranes still towering overhead, and in summer the whole area spills outdoors. It is less about a strict club night and more about a long, easy evening that drifts from a drink into dancing.
When I want something rawer I head to Garage Noord. It is exactly what the name suggests, an industrial space that leans into leftfield electronic music and a crowd that comes for the sound rather than the scene. Noord is full of spaces like this, converted garages and halls that host club nights you will not find advertised on the main squares. Half the fun is that they still feel like a secret.
The ferries behind Central Station are free and run twenty four hours, so you never need to worry about a taxi across the water. The Buiksloterweg ferry drops you almost at Shelter's door, while the NDSM ferry takes a little longer and gives you the best view of the skyline on the way. Bring a jacket, because the crossing gets cold at night, and check the last club times so you are not left waiting for a slow boat.
Noord is proof that the best nights in Amsterdam are not always in the centre. It is quieter to reach, wilder once you arrive, and it keeps a bit of the industrial soul the city was built on.
