The 10 best bars in Melbourne, ranked: Caretaker's Cottage, Black Pearl, Gin Palace, Apollo Inn and more, with opening hours, booking tips and closing times.
The best bars in Melbourne range from a 30-seat Art Deco room to a Chinatown rooftop and a rock and roll dive bar. Caretaker's Cottage ranked 45th in The World's 50 Best Bars 2026 and is the only Australian bar in the main top 50. Black Pearl in Fitzroy and Gin Palace in the CBD stay open until 03:00, which matters in a city where many cocktail bars close at 01:00.
This list ranks ten bars for 2026 on drinks, setting, door, closing time and value. Each entry gives hours from an official or recent source, the door and one reason to skip it. Most of these bars open at 16:00 or 17:00, so the night starts early. A cocktail costs about A$20–28 (€12.50–17.50) and a pint A$10–14 (€6.30–8.80). Photo ID is expected everywhere, and the smallest bars take bookings.
We ranked bars on five things: drinks, setting, door, late licence and value. Drinks means a list with a point of view, from a monthly changing menu to more than 330 gins. Setting means a room you would choose to sit in. Door means you can predict whether to book or walk in. Late licence counts for a lot in a city where many bars shut at 01:00. Value compares prices with what you get, but most bars publish no menu prices, so it counts least. Hours come from official sites, Concrete Playground, Time Out and Man of Many, and entries with older listings say so.
A cocktail bar in a heritage cottage beside Wesley Church, ranked 45th in The World's 50 Best Bars in October 2026 and the only Australian bar in the main top 50. Time Out credits a vinyl-heavy soundtrack, unfussy service and a menu that changes monthly. Concrete Playground lists 16:00 to 01:00 from Tuesday to Saturday. Skip it if you want a late night: it closes at 01:00 and is shut on Sunday and Monday.
A family-run cocktail bar on Brunswick Street with a downstairs bar and an upstairs space called the Attic. Concrete Playground lists 17:00 to 03:00 every day, and Time Out includes it among the best late-night bars in the city. It works as a late stop after the pubs and gigs of Fitzroy. Skip it if you want a quiet drink on Friday or Saturday.
A laneway bar on Russell Place with a basement setting, a list of more than 330 gins and martinis served at the table. Man of Many lists 16:00 to 03:00 every day, and Time Out's 2026 bar guide says it closes at 3 am. Time Out also highlights the sangas, toasted sandwiches that soak up the gin. Skip it if you do not like gin: the list is the point.
Andrew McConnell's first standalone cocktail bar, opened in June 2023 at McDonald House on Flinders Lane. Time Out counts about 30 seats, Art Deco details, dim lighting and seasonal cocktails, and its 2026 bar list advises booking. It opens every night until 01:00, with an earlier 15:00 start on Fridays. Skip it if you want a big night out, a late finish or a loud room.
A 1920s prohibition-style bar down Malthouse Lane, with banquettes and booths and a Whisky Room hidden behind a bookcase. Online reservations cover one to 12 guests and tables are held for 90 minutes. Friday and Saturday run 16:00 to 01:00, and the bar is shut on Sunday and Monday. Skip it if you want a casual walk-in: bookings, smart-casual dress and 18+ are part of the deal.
An American-style dive bar on Russell Street at the edge of Chinatown, from the team behind The Everleigh, with red neon, black leather booths, a pool table and a rock jukebox. Concrete Playground lists 15:00 to 03:00 from Thursday to Saturday and 17:00 to 01:00 on other nights. Time Out's 2026 bar list notes strict ID checks. Skip it if you want a long cocktail list: this is beer, whisky and shots.
A two-level bar in Heffernan Lane in Chinatown, with a rooftop gin garden upstairs and drinks that lean to tiki-style cocktails, highballs and fresh-pressed juices. Time Out lists an aperitivo hour from 17:00 to 19:00 on weekdays, and the bar is open to 01:00 every night. Walk-ins are welcome and groups of 10 to 30 can book. Skip it if you want a quiet drink: Time Out calls it a party bar.
A seventh-floor rooftop bar at Curtin House on Swanston Street, open 12:00 to 01:00 according to the building's own site. A 2025 Beat guide notes electronic club nights on the roof, including the Body High nights, and advises checking Resident Advisor first. It makes a good first stop, and the Toff in Town is on level 2 of the same building. Skip it if you want a seat on a warm evening: rooftops fill up fast.
A cocktail bar on Exhibition Street in the theatre district, named after the year the word cocktail first appeared in print. The menu works through decade-inspired classics and house creations, in a room of red, black and dark wood with a mezzanine balcony. The bar's own site lists midnight closing on weekdays and 01:00 on Friday and Saturday. Skip it if you want a late finish.
A European-style wine bar on Johnston Street in Fitzroy that serves food and also pours cocktails, beer, sake and cider. At the back is Drinkwell, a courtyard bar that the venue calls its version of a beer garden. It opens from 17:30 Tuesday to Saturday, and Sunday is a set-menu lunch at A$45 (€28) per person. Skip it if you want a late bar: The Old Bar and The Night Cat on the same street run later.
Bars here close at different times, so order the night around them. Caretaker's Cottage, Apollo Inn, Union Electric Bar and 1806 close between midnight and 01:00, so use them early. Gin Palace stays open to 03:00 every day, Heartbreaker to 03:00 from Thursday to Saturday and Black Pearl in Fitzroy to 03:00 every night, which makes them the natural second stop. Book Apollo Inn, which has about 30 seats, and Eau De Vie, where tables are held for 90 minutes.
The Night Network runs on Friday and Saturday nights only. On other nights trams stop around midnight, so use Uber or DiDi. Tram 11 runs along Brunswick Street to Black Pearl, and tram 86, a Night Network route, serves Collingwood and Northcote. Drinking on public transport is banned in Victoria.
