The 8 best bars in Breda

The 8 best bars in Breda, ranked: De Boterhal, De Beyerd and Dok19 for beer, plus a brown café, a wine bar and a gin bar, with hours, tips and honest downsides.

6 min read

The best bars in Breda are beer cafés. De Beyerd traces the city's brewing history back to 1628, and the bars worth a seat pour speciality beer: 25 taps on the Grote Markt, more than 80 beers at the harbour and a café, restaurant and brewery on the Boschstraat. Around them are a brown café under the Grote Kerk, a wine bar, a gin bar in a boutique hotel and a Belgian beer café in Ginneken.

This list ranks eight of them. The party cafés of the Vismarktstraat are in our guide to the best clubs in Breda, so this one is for sitting down. Each entry gives the opening hours where we found them, a tip and one honest reason to skip it. The basics: the legal age for alcohol is 18, venues ask for ID, smoking inside has been banned since 2008 and the standard closing time is 02:00.

How we picked

We ranked on five things: sound, crowd, door, late licence and value. For bars, sound means a room where you can talk, crowd means people who came for the drink rather than the dance floor, and door means walk-in and easy to predict. Late licence matters less here: most of these bars are for the early and middle evening, and the standard closing time is 02:00. Value compares the choice in the glass with the price, but few of these bars publish prices, so where we could not confirm a detail we say so. Every bar here has a 2025 or 2026 source. We do not sell tickets ourselves.

1
25 taps on the Grote Markt

De Boterhal

Grote Markt, Speciality beer, Craft beer, Brewery

The beer café in the middle of the Grote Markt, not tied to a brewery, with 25 taps, more than 100 bottled beers and a list that changes every month. The Sint Joris brewery in the medieval cellar makes the house beers, and the café offers tasting platters, beer tastings and a beer high tea. Skip it if you want a club: it is a beer café, not a dance floor.

It continues a brewing history that goes back to De Drie Hoefijzers in 1628, and the restaurant sits between the brewing kettles. Brown café under the Grote Kerk

Café De Bruine Pij

Kerkplein / Reigerstraat, Brown café, Beer, Live music

A traditional brown café with peanut shells on the floor and a terrace directly under the Grote Kerk. The beer list is long, a 2025 local guide mentions live music, and after midnight it turns into a late-night bar. Skip it if you want a dance floor: the mood stays on the cosy side.

80 beers and Friday dancing

Café Bruxelles

Havermarkt, Speciality beer, Party hits

A speciality beer café on the Havermarkt with more than 80 beers, lunch and dinner, and a seven-day week. The crowd is mixed in age earlier in the week, and the music goes up for dancing on Friday and Saturday. A 2025 student guide puts music from the forties to the nineties on Tuesday. Skip it if you want a quiet table late on a weekend.

It is open on Friday and Saturday nights, which makes it a calm place to start the evening. Skip it if you want beer and a crowd: this is gin, in a hotel.

Wine by the glass, Paris style

Petit Bardot

Belgian beer on a Ginneken square

Café Moeke

Ginneken, Belgian beer, Gin, Terrace

A Belgian beer café with its own beer and gin and a large terrace on the Ginnekenmarkt, outside the centre. A 2025 local guide calls it a laid-back local favourite. Skip it if you want a night that runs until 04:00: Ginneken is for an early evening and a long chat.

Boerke Verschuren is on the same square.

Seven of these eight bars are in the city centre. Café Moeke is the outlier, on the Ginnekenmarkt in Ginneken. A simple route: start with a tasting platter at De Boterhal on the Grote Markt, move to the terrace of Café De Bruine Pij on the Kerkplein, and finish at Café Bruxelles on the Havermarkt, where the music goes up on Friday and Saturday.

Most bars close at 02:00 unless the mayor has granted an exemption. The Bliss Gin & Tonic Hotel Bar is open on Friday and Saturday nights only. For the way home, an Arriva night bus is due to start as a Saturday-night trial at the end of 2026. Taxis have a maximum tariff of €4.31 plus €3.17 per kilometre and €0.52 per minute, and Uber also operates in Breda.

Breda's bars suit a slow start. Begin with a beer on the Grote Markt, add a wine or a gin, and only then walk to the party streets.
