Historic pub in Turk's Head Yard off Briggate, dating from 1715, with a Grade II* listed interior, real ale and a beer garden.
Whitelock's Ale House sits in Turk's Head Yard, a narrow alley off Briggate, and traces its history back to 1715, when it opened as the Turk's Head. The Whitelock family took it over in the 1880s, and the interior, with marble counters, engraved mirrors and brasswork, is Grade II* listed. In 1912 Prince George entertained a party in a curtained-off part of the restaurant.
It pours real ale and craft beer, serves home-cooked food and has a large beer garden. Opening is 11:00–23:00 from Sunday to Wednesday and 11:00–00:00 from Thursday to Saturday, and the Turk's Head bar in the same yard keeps its own hours. Not for you if you want a late one: it closes at midnight.
Walk-in pub; dogs and children welcome.
