Former Bridewell police station on Nelson Street, now an arts centre whose 300-capacity basement and cells host electro and techno nights.
The Island occupies the old Bridewell Police Station on Nelson Street. Since 2008 the community arts charity Artspace Lifespace has run it as studios for more than 100 artists, with dance and circus spaces, a sewing room and a gallery. After hours, the basement venue and the Edwardian cells host experimental club nights.
The basement holds 300 people. October 2026 brought RTN, an electro and techno night, and the PLU Dance party, and the programme also covers bass, jungle, soul and Afrobeats. Club nights are not weekly, so check the listings. Not for you if you need step-free access: the venue is underground and is not wheelchair accessible.
Club nights are occasional and ticketed, so check the listing before you go.
