Modern Scottish pub on the Gallowgate, opposite the Barrowland, with over 160 whiskies and cocktails built on East End history.

The Gate opened in August 2019 on the Gallowgate, directly opposite the Barrowland Ballroom, on a site that has held a pub since 1826. Its owner, Andy Gemmell, describes it as a modern Scottish pub with a cocktail-led drinks list. Behind the bar are more than 160 whiskies, around 30 gins and a short list of rotating cocktails.

In March 2026 it launched Tales of the Gallowgate, a cocktail menu built on the history of the East End, from the Barras to Billy Connolly. Toasties come from a takeaway hatch. It is the obvious stop before a Barrowland gig. Not for you if you want a dance floor: this is a bar for drinking and talking.
