Budapest's first ruin bar: nine bars in a stripped former apartment block on Kazinczy utca, free entry and open until 04:00.

Szimpla Kert opened in 2002 and moved in 2004 into a run-down block of former homes and a stove factory on Kazinczy utca, saving the building from demolition. It is widely seen as the pioneer of the Budapest ruin bar: mismatched furniture, bare brick, fairy lights and a courtyard that used to screen indie films. Today there are nine bars over two floors and more than 400 drinks.

Entry is free and it opens every day, from 15:00 on weekdays, noon on Saturday and 09:00 on Sunday, when a farmers' market fills the courtyard, until 04:00. A beer costs around 2,000 Ft. The official capacity is 600, but it has been reported to see 5,000 people in a night, most of them visitors. Not for you at 23:00 on a Saturday; go early or midweek.
