Soup is the Northern Quarter venue many people still call Soup Kitchen: it dropped the second word but kept its address on Spear Street. Upstairs is a laid-back bar with affordable drinks. Downstairs is a dark, low-ceilinged basement that hosts gigs early in the evening and club nights later, from techno and house to experimental music. Swing Ting ran its parties here for eleven years.
The bar opens at 16:00 from Wednesday to Friday and at noon on Saturday, and stays open until 04:00 on Friday and Saturday. Gig tickets cost around £15–16, and club nights keep prices low. Not for you if you want room to move: the basement is small and fills up fast.
