Melville dive bar at 78 4th Avenue open Wednesday to Sunday 17:00 to 02:00, with craft rums, punk gigs, drag nights and a reopening on 31 October 2025.
Smoking Kills is a small, grungy bar at 78 4th Avenue in Melville. In Your Pocket describes a tiny space with a strong craft rum list, graffiti on the tables and brick walls, soft indie music and a retro television that shows cartoon reruns, and lists hours of 17:00 to 02:00, closed Monday and Tuesday. Time Out's 2025 bar list calls it a punk and grunge bar with a craft beer selection that turns into a gig venue at night, with weekly drink specials and affordable food.
It closed in June 2025 after complaints from a small group and reopened on 31 October 2025 after a community petition, according to In Your Pocket's Melville guide, which also credits the Melville Security Initiative for the area feeling active again. The April 2026 dancing guide lists two regular nights: Heaven, a drag and DJ night, and Unseen, a daytime drum and bass event, plus punk bands and mosh pits. The bar's website is smokingkillsbar.com. Not for you if you want a large room or a seated meal.
