Old brown café on the Melkmarkt with early 20th-century decor, neon signs, wooden benches and eight beers on tap.
Pelikaan, at Melkmarkt 14 near Groenplaats, is one of the old town's best-loved cafés. The decor is early 20th-century: neon signs, mirrors and long wooden benches. In the daytime it is a locals' café for coffee and a quiet beer; in the evening the crowd fills the room and spills onto the street. There are eight beers on tap, and the list includes De Koninck and Rodenbach, plus wine and snacks.
Published opening hours differ between listings, but it opens in the morning and stays open late, longest on Friday and Saturday. De Muze, the jazz café, is on the same street. Not for you if you want a seat on a Friday night: the room is small and fills fast.
