Family brewery tavern on Friesenstraße, brewing since 1883 and serving its Kölsch only from the cask, open daily from 12:00.

Herrmann Päffgen founded his brewery in 1883, when it was one of many house breweries in Cologne. The family still brews in the Klapperhof and pours at the tavern on Friesenstraße, in the Friesenviertel on the north side of the Altstadt, close to Friesenplatz and its bars.

Päffgen Kölsch is served only from the cask, as it always was, in the 0.2-litre glasses Cologne calls Stangen. The tavern opens every day from 12:00. Because it sits on Friesenstraße, it bridges an afternoon in the old town and a night in the Belgian Quarter a few streets away; Lommerzheim in Deutz pours the same beer. Not for you if you want a choice of beers: there is one, and it is Kölsch.
