Yakitori alley a minute from Shinjuku Station's west exit, with counters for beer, sake and grilled skewers. Cash is common; arrive early.
Omoide Yokocho is a lane of tiny yakitori and izakaya counters at the west exit of Shinjuku Station, in 1-chome Nishi-Shinjuku. Each shop has a few stools, grills skewers over charcoal and serves beer and sake to people sitting shoulder to shoulder. Listed shops open in the afternoon and mostly close by 23:00 or 23:30.
Budget about ¥5,000 (€28) for a satisfying meal and drinks. Cash only is common, English menus are limited and smoking on the street is banned throughout Shinjuku ward. Not for you if you want cocktails or a late finish: the alley is a dinner stop, and most counters are shut before midnight.
Walk-in counters with a few stools each; many take cash only.
