Alley of about 40 tiny drinking counters beside Shibuya Station, with 4–8 seats each. Cover ¥500–1,000, most shops cash only.
Nonbei Yokocho is a two-metre-wide alley of about 40 small bars and izakayas on the Miyamasuzaka slope in Shibuya, about five minutes from the Hachiko Exit. Most counters seat four to eight, and most open around 18:00. TIGHT, a five-seat bar with an English-language site, opens from 19:00 to 02:00, and from 18:00 on Sundays.
Expect a cover of ¥500 to ¥1,000 (€3 to €6) plus an otoshi snack charge of ¥300 to ¥500, and budget ¥3,000 to ¥5,000 (€17 to €28) a head. Most shops take no reservations and no cards, and the advice is to move on after about two hours. Ask before taking photos and do not stand in the alley to shoot. Not for you if you are a large group: counters seat a handful.
Walk-in counters; most shops take no reservations and no cards.
