Kartoffel is a German-leaning restaurant in a monumental wharf cellar at canal level on the Oudegracht, with tables inside the cellar and outside on the wharf. It calls itself unpretentious, and the menu is meat, cabbage and potatoes with German beer, including litre glasses.
It opens at 17:00 on weekdays and closes at 23:00, opens at noon at the weekend, stays open until 01:00 on Saturday and closes at 22:00 on Sunday. The kitchen stops earlier. There is a pub quiz on the first Thursday of the month, Mad Cow Comedy on Sundays and live music on selected Saturdays. Not for you if you want cocktails or a dance floor: come for a litre and a plate, then move on.
